Chapter 326: Chapter 326: False Alarm_1
Having spent so many days in the Fourth Neutral Country, Song Lan had come to a full understanding of one truth— the power of the Horn Bug was limited.
To abduct from the execution grounds right in front of two Rebel Army leaders with over a billion in bounties using just the power of a Horn Bug was obviously a bit unrealistic.
What’s more troublesome was that Lu Xiang also lacked such experience.
However, the intelligence department was not going to give them time to plan. While Song Lan and Lu Xiang were talking, they brought out the prisoners, blindfolded and in handcuffs and shackles, from the prison and paraded them through the busiest streets of the Capital City, on their way to the square.
During Veirdo’s tenure, the square originally served as a place for giving speeches to the residents of the city, but it had been transformed into an execution platform after Aljom’s renovations.
Aljom and his subordinates didn’t like giving speeches; they were men of action.
For instance, sending those who had endangered the underground shelters to the gallows, to be hanged in front of all the citizens.
Not everyone had the chance to be sent to the execution platform, only those well-known important figures received such "honor," while the ordinary citizens who were not important were usually secretly killed and made to become the permanently missing.
Over the past dozen years, Veirdo’s party members were sent to the gallows one by one under various charges.
But the citizens who were forcibly gathered here today clearly had no interest in the "celebration" the intelligence department considered. Most of them were figuring out whether they could leave this place of strife, or hoping to hear some explanations from the intelligence department, like why the ghosts that had been confirmed dead were crawling out of their graves.
But the intelligence department remained the intelligence department.
Even under such turbulent circumstances, the best solution they could think of was still to execute a suspected spy.
Song Lan mingled amongst the onlooking crowd, and in the bustling square, no one would intentionally pay attention to the movements of a Horn Bug.
The good news was that Aljom and Esinvig in person were not present; the one in charge of overseeing the execution was a cadre of the Aljom Army, who was also the head of the entire intelligence department.
He was still wearing the pre-war Cavalry uniform, with a solemn face facing the impending trial as if to him, it wasn’t just about executing a criminal but more like a sacred and solemn Ceremony.
Song Lan gauged the distance between himself and the execution platform; it wasn’t difficult to sever the rope and prevent the execution with the Overload system activated, but the challenge was how to take Lu Xiang’s teacher away from this place of strife under everyone’s watchful eyes.
All exits from the city were under martial law, and it was as difficult as ascending to heaven to leave the city under the nose of the intelligence department.
There was less than a quarter of an hour left before the execution was to officially take place.
The crowd was silent as time passed by, second by second until there was a disturbance from the front row. Someone who suddenly climbed onto the execution platform made everyone’s eyes widen in surprise, including the person in charge of overseeing the execution from the intelligence department.
Veirdo.
The former leader, who had been missing for more than a decade, climbed onto the execution stage shakily.
Seemingly due to prolonged imprisonment, Veirdo’s walk was extremely uncoordinated; he squinted, as the bright light outside the prison brought him a great deal of strain.
"Who, who let him out?"
The intelligence department head was furious as he scanned his surroundings, yet no one could answer his question.
"Let it end here, killing her won’t solve anything."
Veirdo sternly scrutinized the head of the intelligence department. He was deeply disappointed with the latter’s actions. Over these dozen years, Aljom had ultimately lost his original purpose.
Their shared mission was to protect "the Sun" and the legacy of the underground shelters, but in the process, Aljom had gradually forgotten the original intention of protecting this secret, even going so far as to position himself against the people.
Everything happening now was related to the future of the nation, and he knew he could no longer stay in his cell.
But to accept the invitation of the United Government and hand over "the Sun" to them?
Doing so would undoubtedly make him a sinner in the Fourth Neutral Country.
As Veirdo grappled with his dilemma, a turn of events presented itself.
A high-ranking officer from the Esinvig Army, who called himself "Rat," had a prison guard bring him some intelligence from aboveground.
The alliance with the United Government and Neutral Countries was not their only option. Recently, the Thirteenth Nation, a trade center among Neutral Countries, had broken free from the United Government’s control and was actively seeking allies.
Both sides were in similar predicaments, also in the phase of regrouping.
Moreover, after losing Dr. Bai Zhu, the Sixth Nation also harbored thoughts of withdrawing from the alliance. The situation on the surface was far from as dire as they had imagined.
If they could foster an alliance among three Neutral Countries, the United Government would have to consider multiple factors before waging war again.
Veirdo realized that for the Fourth Neutral Country, this was both a crisis and an opportunity to return to life on the surface. The true purpose of the Esinvig Army’s visit was not to help consolidate Aljom’s power.
They were rebelling against all forms of irrational rule.
This included the puppet-style governance of the United Government over Neutral Countries as well as states like the Fourth Neutral Country that had deviated from their proper course.
History had proven time and again that even the strongest walls had their day of being breached. If they could not keep pace with the times, then when the United Government or some other power truly arrived, all that would be left for them would be exploitation and suffering.
Veirdo didn’t know who "Rat" was; he guessed that the person might very well be a diplomat from the Esinvig Army.
The prison guard had simply handed him a document, yet this unassuming piece of paper reignited a passion within him that he had not felt for a long time.
If possible, he genuinely wished he could sit down and have a heartfelt talk with "Rat."
Regrettably, to reach the vision that Mister "Rat" had described, they would still need to surmount an immense barrier.
"Shut up, traitor!"
The head of the intelligence department scolded, and at his signal, a row of gun barrels pointed straight at Veirdo.
He was extremely anxious inside.
Because of Veirdo’s exceptional situation, Aljom had expressly ordered them to spare his life. Even though this man had been the mastermind behind advocating life on the surface, they could not execute him publicly in front of the citizens.
As the founder and head of the intelligence department, he was both perplexed and dissatisfied with Aljom’s orders.
However, now there seemed to be an opportunity before him.
If Veirdo became a jailbreaker, or even attempted to stop an execution in the full view of the public, they would have sufficient reason to kill this sinner on the spot, lest they lose face in front of the people.
With this thought, the head of the intelligence department gave an order, "He’s a jailbreaker, shoot him!"
But the response to his command was not gunfire; rather, it was a chorus of wolf howls and the panicked screams of the surrounding crowd.
A massive shadow leaped high from the crowd, pouncing straight onto the execution platform.
This scene left the head somewhat stunned, and his brain went blank for a full few seconds before he could make sense of the situation before him.
The wolf had come.
More precisely, the mutant creatures that lurked outside the city had attacked at this critical juncture.
