Chapter 31: Chapter 31: Arch Enemy_1
Song Lan still remembered, that the last time someone had visited the Law Enforcement Manor strutting arrogantly amidst a crowd, was Angel Foster.
Equally snooty, heading straight for Lu Xiang’s office, she plonked herself right on a chair as soon as she was inside, crossed her legs, and began demanding people, as if she was the real boss of the Manor.
The visitor this time was no less pretentious than Angel Foster.
Glossy black leather shoes, neatly set hair held in place by hair gel, a well-pressed black suit, a pair of gold-rimmed glasses on his nose, his eyes held an unconcealed arrogance. To the onlookers, including Song Lan, he gave nothing but a contemptuous smile.
He was accompanied by two similarly dressed men.
The trio’s get-up was a perfect embodiment of what common folks imagined the "elites" to look like.
"He is the new High Prosecutor, who has taken Angel Foster’s position."
One division head, an experienced gossip, didn’t forget to impart the general knowledge of District 17 to them. "Dominas was the second-in-command at the Inspection Department in District 17 earlier."
"Is he not from the Foster Family?"
A colleague enquired.
"The players have changed, but the game remains the same. Whoever occupies that position, even if they are not from the Foster Family, they are bound to be their protégés."
It’s certain that they will have to have dealings with this new High Prosecutor in the future.
This new High Prosecutor doesn’t seem like an easy person to get along with.
The trio took big strides up to the third floor. The new High Prosecutor pushed the office door open without even knocking and left his two flunkeys standing like stone guards on either side of the door.
"He’s putting on a bigger show than Angel."
"A new officer has to prove his mettle."
The crowd chattered away. There were many grievances between the enforcers and the Inspection Department in the first place, ensuring a heated discussion over Dominas’s behavior.
Song Lan found a comparatively quieter spot and did not join in the chatter.
About five minutes later, Lu Xiang and Dominas emerged from the office together.
Dominas appeared even more arrogant, as if he had just accomplished a great feat.
"They’re going to take Lainal away, watch," warned the gossip-loving crowd, guessing the outcome.
Even though Director Lu has a tight grip on things, he was parachuted into District 17 after all. Now that they had shown up with documents approved by higher-ups, refusing to give them face would be tantamount to publicly crossing the federal government. If there’s one thing that the Inspection Department is skilled at, it’s putting labels on people.
Among all the laws laid down at the inception of the United Government, at least one of them can be applied to you.
However, the crowd got it wrong this time, the duo did not leave the office building and head straight to the interrogation building where Lainal was being held. Instead, they moved directly into the main conference room where the refugees were.
Seeing this, the onlookers were puzzled.
Did the new High Prosecution Officer decide to pay a visit to the refugees to boost his image before taking in Lainal?
As people mocked the hypocrisy of the new High Prosecutor, Song Lan saw through everything.
He hadn’t gone to visit the refugees, but to find the Foster Family’s "shipment".
No wonder the Foster Family focused solely on having him deal with Lainal’s aftermath last night, without a single mention of the "shipment".
He waited in the stairway for a long time. This time, the ’collection’ took unusually long. It was only after most of the gossipy crowd had dispersed that the conference room door was shoved open. The first to walk out was a no-longer composed Dominas.
From his reaction, the garnering of the "shipment" seemed to have been quite a ordeal.
Song Lan remembered the old man who had mentioned in their earlier conversation that Lainal had selected a group of people to be sent somewhere else.
If everything was as expected, the "shipment" that the Foster family wanted might just be among them.
According to Lu Xiang, the "shipment" was either sent to pleasure venues, or underground boxing rings which resulted in losing one’s chastity or life respectively.
Perhaps tonight, all he had to do was pay attention to the night news and see which unlawful venue was suddenly raided by the Inspection Department. That place could potentially be the whereabouts of the "shipment". Just that, Song Lan really couldn’t figure out what was so special about this "shipment" that made the Foster family so eager to find it.
He always thought that there was something odd about it.
If this "shipment" was really so special, how could Lainal handle them just like any other illegal immigrant?
The only possibility Song Lan could think of was that the Foster family had communicated directly with Chai Ke earlier. Unfortunately, Chai Ke left this world before he had the chance to hand over the "shipment" to the Foster family.
Chai Ke, why is it you again?
He couldn’t help but criticise Chai Ke in his mind. Recently, all the problems in District 17 seemed, to a greater or lesser degree, to be related to him.
However, now that the Foster family had asked Dominas to handle the matter, the whereabouts of the "shipment" no longer mattered to him. For now, what he needs to figure out is what to cook tonight.
After being busy for two consecutive nights, Lu Xiang was finally going to have dinner at home tonight.
Beef brisket or chicken drumsticks?
As for Lainal Boyev, now the law, Foster family and all the residents of District 17 hoped for his death, Song Lan sincerely suggested that he simply smash his own head and die. As much as possible, try not to trouble everyone. In doing so, at least he could leave behind a tough-guy reputation after his death.
This morning, he "accidentally" overheard a conversation between his colleagues from the Criminal Analysis Division.
Lainal woke up before dawn. They tried to approach him, but Lainal just verbally abused them and did not say a word.
As a deeply concerned citizen, Song Lan really hoped Lainal could reveal something about the Foster family, but it seemed Lainal disliked the law enforcers more than the Foster family.
Before Song Lan had time to go downstairs, he heard a commotion at the bottom of the stairs.
He quickly ran down, just in time to catch a colleague who was at the frontline of the gossiping crowd, and asked, "What happened again?"
"There’s been a major incident at the Interrogation building."
Huffing and panting, the colleague took a couple of breaths, then continued, "Lainal is dead!"
"Dead?"
"It’s said he smashed his head against the corner of a table, the contents of his skull...Anyway, now the Special Action Team, Criminal Analysis Division and Field Investigation Division personnel have all rushed there!"
Having said that, the colleague didn’t wait around for Song Lan’s reaction and rushed down the stairs.
No, I was just wishing, I didn’t really mean that he should do it!
Song Lan never expected Lainal to be so stubborn that he’d really smash his head to death in the interrogation room.
