Chapter 298: Chapter 298: Witch and Frog_1
The frog on the ground finally made up its mind. Although it didn’t know what Song Lan meant by sincerity, and it had never shown true sincerity to anyone before, this might be its only chance to revert back. It didn’t want to miss this opportunity, "I need your help."
Asking for forgiveness in the form of a frog was unquestionably a hellish difficulty, even by the standards of the most fantastical movies, it would seem absurd.
Yet, this was the reality it had to face now.
"Others can’t help you when it comes to offering sincerity."
"I just hope you can help explain the situation, give me at least a chance to communicate!"
The frog looked up, gesticulating wildly with its hands and feet.
The last time it tried to communicate with people did not go well; other than getting hit squarely by a mop, there was no effective progress.
"That’s no problem."
Song Lan nodded. In fact, even if the frog hadn’t asked for his help, he was planning to secretly follow along.
Being a spectator was only one reason; from a work perspective, the girl the frog claimed to have led on and then abandoned was very likely the last person to have seen that Ability User.
Under the frog’s guidance, they took the elevator to the twentieth floor. As soon as the elevator doors opened, an odd scent wafted up.
The closer they got to the room the frog had indicated, the stronger the smell became.
"Knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock."
Before Song Lan could knock, the frog shot out its long tongue and started pounding loudly on the closed wooden door.
This room was somewhat unusual.
The construction of the door was vastly different from the other hotel compartments, as if it had been specially isolated.
Ten seconds later, a tall woman with big wavy blonde hair, dressed in a black medieval witch’s robe, opened the door.
This striking outfit left Song Lan and Lu Xiang frozen at the threshold for quite a while—even though the woman was dressed like she was going to a costume party, they recognized her immediately.
Hera, a name that would appear in the headlines of District Seventeen’s local news almost every other week, was one of the favorite subjects for gossip reporters.
She came from a prestigious family and held a key position in Man Sheng Biopharmaceutical at a young age, managing the local branch of the company’s projects in District Seventeen from the core area.
What’s more important is that she was beautiful and single.
So with the slightest stir, gossip site reporters swarmed like sharks that had scented blood.
This totally overturned the story structure Song Lan had imagined; considering her background, Hera was far more significant than the frog, which puzzled him about the frog’s actions.
Hera’s status roughly equated to Falena’s position at Unified Tech. To abandon such a high-profile figure, wasn’t the frog afraid of encountering a "gang crossfire" on the way to work the next day and dying from twenty or thirty bullets in his car?
"What do you want?"
Seeing the two of them not speaking, Hera asked.
Through the half-open door, the room was clearly no longer a regular hotel setup but had been completely transformed into a small magical cottage. In the center of the room stood a huge cauldron boiling with ominous green liquid—the scent in the hallway emanated from this cauldron.
With her current appearance and what was happening in her hotel room, she was enough to dominate the headlines for the next day. Song Lan could already imagine the articles picturing her as an evil witch crafted by the netizens.
To be honest, if he hadn’t been working, he would have quite liked to see it.
"Here’s the thing..."
Song Lan made it brief, summarizing to Hera their encounter with the frog and what was unfolding in the hotel. Unexpectedly, Hera’s emotions remained completely stable throughout the narration. After listening to Song Lan, without any hint of disturbance in her emotions, she finally said succinctly, "I know."
"Do you mean you know about the Psychic in the hotel, or about him turning into a frog?"
"Both."
Hera shifted her gaze to the frog perched on Song Lan’s left shoulder. With just a casual gaze, the frog stiffened, unable to say a word.
This was the posture one assumes when facing a natural predator.
"Why aren’t you speaking? Isn’t it you who had them bring you here?"
"Hera, actually I..."
"You hope to receive a kiss, to lift the curse that’s upon you."
Seeing the frog hem and haw, Hera voiced his purpose for coming, "Fine."
Under the astonished gaze of Song Lan and Lu Xiang, she reached out, picked up the frog, cradled it in her palms, and kissed it right in front of them.
!?
This is progressing too fast, isn’t it?
They had long heard that the private lives of high society were liberal, but they had never expected it to be to this extent—Shouldn’t such intimate acts at least wait until after they had left to be more appropriate?
About a minute later, the silence in the corridor made both Lu Xiang and the frog turn their gaze towards Song Lan.
The frog hadn’t changed back.
He was still in a frog’s form, cradled in Hera’s palm like a homeless little animal.
"Because, you didn’t give your true heart," Hera said.
For those who do not give their true heart, no matter how many times the same ceremony is repeated, the curse will not be lifted.
This frog didn’t turn from a prince.
He did not inherit the resilience and devotion of the princes from fairy tales; instead, he possessed all the traits typical of a playboy. Even now, seeking help was not out of genuine remorse but rather a desire to break the curse through some shortcut.
"You can deceive me; I am always willing to believe you," Hera continued. "But you can’t deceive the curse or your own heart."
"...What exactly do you want to do?"
The frog seemed a tad angry.
"What I wanted to do has been accomplished," she asserted.
Before the frog even realized something was amiss, she pinched him, ignoring his struggles, quickly walked to a table, and stuck him into a delicate cage. This cage seemed to offer the frog a seemingly generous living space, almost as if it was custom-made for him, "I am going to lock you in this cage until you understand the meaning of a true heart."
"Help me!"
The frog started screaming at Song Lan and Lu Xiang, his voice filled with desolation.
He realized he had been duped.
There were no sweet love and no elixir to lift his curse here, only a witch wanting to imprison him here forever!
"Alternatively, I could set you free," Hera said with a light laugh, bending down to peer at the frog through the bars of the cage. "But in that case, you will have to live forever in this way. You only have one chance."
Her words plunged the frog into silence.
Also immersed in silence were Song Lan and Lu Xiang at the door.
Especially Lu Xiang—seeing the frog locked in the cage seemed to stir something in her, this was not the fairy-tale love story she had imagined.
Hera, as if seeing through Lu Xiang’s heart, spoke while the frog was caught in hesitation and indecision, "The first thing you must do to love someone in the fairy tales I’ve read, is to keep them by your side."
"This isn’t love; it’s a curse!"
This declaration seemed to awaken the frog in the cage; he looked up, arguing his case.
"Exactly."
Hera didn’t deny it, her smile growing wider, "In this world, what curse is more twisted than love?"
