Chapter 297: Chapter 297: The Antidote is True Heart_1
"You, you can’t do this to me!"
The frog, its body squeezed out of shape, struggled and shouted, "My dad is the director of the technology department at Flashpoint Information Technology!"
A classic case of dragging the parent into it appeared!
Song Lan rubbed his chin, which had been bumped by the frog’s head; it didn’t really hurt, but the sudden loud noise and the bizarre effect that popped up were frightening.
He just hadn’t expected that after being squeezed in Lu Xiang’s hand, the frog would come out with such a classically troublesome line.
He had heard of Flashpoint Information Technology. It was one of the few companies based in the seventeenth district. The company wasn’t big, at best it could be considered a medium-sized enterprise, but it did have good advertising. You could often see their advertisements using holographic images near subway stations.
"With the way you look now, do you think your dad would even recognize you?"
Song Lan glanced at the frog that Lu Xiang held, now so altered in appearance that it was hard to guess what he might have looked like before the transformation.
Faced with his soul-searching question, the frog was momentarily at a loss for words. Its eyes bulged, and its cheeks puffed up as if becoming accustomed to its new frog identity.
Song Lan was not interested in Flashpoint Technology or who the frog’s father was. In his view, the very process of transforming from a human into a frog was filled with magical elements.
Keep in mind, in the year 2166, frogs were a species that could only be found in biological encyclopedias. The closest thing to a frog that the United Government had discovered was a giant creature that lived in miasmic swamps, nearly three meters tall, the kind that treated exploration teams like snacks.
"Let’s hear it then, how exactly did you end up like this?"
Song Lan signaled to Lu Xiang to let go, releasing the frog that appeared to be on the verge of being squeezed to death.
"I, I rejected a troublesome woman who was pestering me, and then after drinking a glass of wine, I suddenly turned into this!"
"What sort of woman was she?"
"The kind where... we met by chance, everyone was just in it for some fun, taking what they needed, but I didn’t expect her to get serious."
It sounded like a tale of love gone wrong.
But in the seventeenth district of 2166, such stories were hardly news. Song Lan often heard from Zhuang Chi about the tumultuous private lives of the upper society.
"You are Law Enforcers, right? Hurry up and think of something!"
The frog paced anxiously on the floor, its current form so delicate that one slip could result in getting squashed by passersby.
Lu Xiang looked at Song Lan. She thought the frog was probably yet another victim of a fairy tale, but she had no idea which fairy tale could turn a living person into a frog. It didn’t sound whimsical at all, but more like some dark cult ceremony.
She remembered the medieval documents related to witchcraft that she had read mentioned this kind of Transformation magic.
"This is the punishment for being a scumbag."
Although the details were different from the fairy tales Song Lan was familiar with, the outcome was the same.
Whether it was the little girl on the street or the commitment-phobic scumbag, both revealed one thing—they were likely dealing with a Psychic who enjoyed joining in the fun.
So far, their actions lacked a clear aim, simply engaging these people with an attitude of making a spectacle, which was likely also the reason there had been no casualties.
Laid-back and composed.
After depicting such an image in his mind, Song Lan felt more at ease. It indicated that the other party was probably not targeting them, but had casually passed through the seventeenth district.
"I admit, I’m a scumbag, but I’m also a legitimate citizen of the seventeenth district! I’ve paid my taxes on time every month, and my contributions are part of your operational funds!"
The frog, as if it had found its savior, crawled over and clung to Song Lan’s ankle. This was the only person who had been willing to listen to it since becoming a frog.
When he had tried to approach the hotel’s service personnel earlier, he was dragged and flung about ten meters away; the staff member even screamed that a strange creature had appeared in the hotel and declared their intention to call the pest control company to exterminate him.
As the son of a high-ranking company executive, when had he ever been subjected to such treatment?
But his anger didn’t cloud his judgment; he quickly realized that the reason Song Lan and Lu Xiang had so easily believed his identity was most likely because they were here due to the strange incidents occurring at the location.
He also overheard people in the hotel discussing a recent cake rain on the streets.
Under Lu Xiang’s astonished gaze, the man-frog duo perfectly embodied the tension of an animated world—Song Lan swung his leg as if it were a wheel on fire, yet despite the frog’s body being whipped around and contorted, even deflating at points, it never let go of its hold on Song Lan’s ankle.
"I don’t want to be a frog, I want to change back!"
Even though its large eyes had turned into slits and icons indicating dizziness appeared above its head, the frog continued to clamor at them.
"You must know how to change me back!"
"There indeed exists a method to restore someone afflicted by a curse to their original form."
Moved by the frog’s persistence, akin to that of a stick of bubble gum, Song Lan thought of the answer hidden in those fairy tale books.
"What method, I have money, any amount will do!"
"This method has nothing to do with money."
In a world filled with childhood innocence, worldly material has no value, "But I must say this up front, unless you can step out of your current mindset, be prepared to spend a lifetime as a frog."
"Hurry up and tell me, I’m willing to try anything!"
The frog asked impatiently.
"What you need is a sincere heart."
This was exactly what the frog lacked the most at the moment because before the transformation, he had broken a girl’s heart, "To be more precise, a girl who still loves you despite your current appearance, willing to kiss you. If you can find such a person, the curse can be lifted."
As soon as these words were spoken, not only the frog but also Lu Xiang wore an expression of shock.
She looked down at the frog stubbornly lying on the ground, wondering if what Song Lan said was truly out of a fairy tale?
First the witchcraft that turned people into frogs, now the search for an unlucky girl willing to kiss a frog
"Furthermore, based on my deductions, if you transformed after drinking her wine, then this curse is probably targeted, you need to win back her affection in this current state—this is the only way to break the curse, can you do that?"
"I..."
Even the self-proclaimed playboy frog fell silent.
In truth, the playboy was a thing of the past; now, no one was willing to engage in romance or talk about love with a frog, let alone commit to an intimate act like kissing.
"I’ve told you the method; you can let go now, clutching at my ankle is pointless."
The frog subconsciously released its grip and slid to the ground, disheartened.
Song Lan guessed this might very well be due to the whimsy of some mysterious Ability User.
The antidote to breaking the curse is a playboy’s conscience and sincerity?
Is there anything more theatrical than this punishment in the world?
