Chapter 219: Black Eat Black_1

Chapter 219: Chapter 219: Black Eat Black_1

As the hovercar descended slowly, Song Lan found himself once again at the "outer world" station closest to District Seventeen.

Only, unlike their last leisure trip, armored vehicles were now parked in front of the station’s inn this time, with several gun-toting punks leaning against the cars, giving them looks akin to those they’d give a big fat sheep.

The armored vehicles were emblazoned with the image of a red spider, presumably a symbol belonging to a force just like the Barrosa Group’s guns and roses emblem.

The fearful looks the station’s residents gave these gunmen suggested to Song Lan that they were probably no ordinary extras.

After entering, a bulky man with a Mohican haircut, who took up an entire bench on his own, glanced at them and then spat out in disappointment, "I thought I would see some lively girls from the city this time."

The director did not introduce their identities, he simply went about setting up the filming drones silently.

There was one thing that the film crew did not intend to inform the actors auditioning in advance.

The extras they were dealing with for the second official audition were actually local criminal gangs.

Red Spider.

From smuggling to human trafficking, and even arms dealing, they were one of the few retailers authorized by the Barrosa Group, and the burly man sitting arrogantly on the bench, legs crossed, was the second in command of the Red Spider Group.

Bringing these folks in to play extras cost a pretty penny.

The advantage, however, was clear: if their legs turned to jelly at the mere sight of these real criminals, then they were not the ones the crew was looking for.

To the director, the Red Spider’s second in command was a perfect litmus test; only those who could dominate this brazen villain with their aura were truly fit to claim the title of Underground Emperor of District Seventeen.

Looking around, Song Lan had more or less guessed the director’s line of thought.

Yet, his heart was heavy.

Why, after Scarecrow’s death and the Barrosa Group’s withdrawal, was there suddenly an unheard-of criminal group emerging?

It was evident that the residents of the station suffered greatly at their hands.

The new mayor, Aureliano, had already started taking over the border trade routes. The last thing they wanted to see was these destabilizing criminal organizations.

It was fortunate that Lu Xiang had not come to visit the set as a family member; otherwise, not one person in the room would have escaped that day.

"Let’s begin."

Said the director, believing that the less prep time he gave Song Lan, the better he could assess his mettle.

He watched from a corner of the room as Song Lan, under the menacing gaze of the Red Spider gunmen, sat down opposite the second in command. At least for now, Song Lan seemed composed—even under the oppressive scrutiny of an entire room of gunmen, his legs had not given out.

The rifle on the table belonging to the second in command was the real deal, and as an arms dealer, Red Spider’s equipment was also top-notch.

Upon receiving his cue, Song Lan asked, following the script, "Did you bring the goods?"

"Goods?"

The second in command raised an eyebrow, "I don’t see any goods, I just see a delicate young master. What, is it your dream to become an actor?"

?

Why wasn’t this man following the script?

According to the script, the next scene should be about inspecting the goods.

Song Lan looked back at the director, who did not call cut but instead gave him a "improvise" look.

Improvise?

That look made Song Lan want to grab the rifle on the table and give the director a good wallop on the head to bring him back to his senses.

The dialogue of the person just now was obviously irrelevant to "Getting the Goods", as the topic had shifted beyond the script and even included personal attacks.

Song Lan didn’t enjoy quarreling with others, especially not with the criminal gangs before him.

"Why are you still lingering here after the Barrosa Group withdrew?"

Since the current conversation had already deviated from the script, he might as well ask some meaningful questions.

Upon hearing this, everyone in the room was startled by the question, even the second-in-command was taken aback for quite a while before responding, "Yo, I didn’t expect you to be so nosy. We’re not only planning to stick around here, but we’re also considering making this place a temporary base."

"I wouldn’t advise you to do that, as the Seventeenth District government is currently taking over the border trade line."

"The Seventeenth District government?"

The second-in-command cracked a smile, revealing his gold front teeth, the part near his incisors engraved with letters, "You mean the current mayor, who can’t even afford proper security personnel?"

At this point, Song Lan finally understood something.

He had thought that Scarecrow’s death and the withdrawal of the Barrosa Group would instill some self-awareness in the criminals active along the border.

Any smart person would take the hint and leave the area, or even seek legitimate mercenary work.

But things don’t always go as one expects, and there will always be foolish souls who fail to grasp the situation—clearly, the man before him was one such fool.

"I’m merely stating a fact; your good days are numbered."

"What did you say?"

In Song Lan’s view, another characteristic of a fool was the inability to control their emotions, always being irritable and hot-tempered, and the burly brute before him checked all the boxes of a fool, reaching for the gun on the table at the slightest provocation.

This wasn’t acting, it was a genuine display of anger.

The second-in-command knew that, theoretically, this was supposed to be an act, and the words just spoken could be ad-libbed lines, yet they had rubbed them the wrong way.

Because of the Barrosa Group’s withdrawal, he and his underlings had disagreed with the boss, to the point of nearly splitting up.

He believed they should seize the moment and take control of the arms trade market, but faced with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, the boss had turned chicken, pondering on moving to a different area to expand.

And now, an audition actor with no relevance to the situation dared to say their good days were over.

"I’d better advise you against doing that."

However, just as the second-in-command was about to touch the rifle, the man opposite spoke again, "If you dare touch that gun, you’re as good as dead."

Couldn’t move.

The second-in-command’s hand froze, even though he could touch the grip of the gun with just a stretch of his arm. But after locking eyes with Song Lan, he found himself completely paralyzed as if under a spell.

His jaw clenched, but no matter what, he couldn’t break the bonds of the immobilizing curse, and out of the corner of his eye, he saw that all his subordinates also seemed stuck in place.

Time ticked away, second by second.

Large beads of sweat rolled down the second-in-command’s forehead, and though he tried to speak several times, he couldn’t utter a single word.

"I’ve suddenly changed my mind."

Song Lan’s gaze flicked toward Su Li, who stood with crossed arms not far off, and the latter understood, moving towards the second-in-command.

"Even if you don’t touch that gun today, you’re not going back."

Accompanied by that was the dull thud of a head hitting the table.

The violent impact split the table in two, and droplets of blood splattered onto Song Lan’s pristine white shirt.
