Chapter 163: Chapter 163: The Power of Team_1
Aureliano’s speech concluded amidst the turmoil, miraculously unscathed.
All four members of the "Black Hand" were captured, and their leader, Perton, was confirmed dead at the scene. Surprisingly, there were no casualties among the civilians present.
The only injury in the incident was sustained by Captain Doug.
A slap from the monster sent him flying and broke several of his ribs, requiring him to stay in the hospital for the following week.
This thunderous operation strengthened the image of the Law Enforcers in the eyes of the citizens of Sector 17. They had previously known of the Law Enforcers’ heroic deeds only through hearsay. But this time, they witnessed firsthand the process of apprehending the assassins from the "outskirts".
Inside the department, however, another mystery vexed them.
How exactly did the alien-like monster perish?
Could there have been another "concerned citizen" offering them a helping hand?
The answer was uncovered the next morning by the lab.
The deceased Colonel Perton had injected himself with a gene-modifying serum. This serum was in an imperfect state. When he rushed toward the stage, a bullet from an arc gun behind him whizzed through the shell of the serum, and one bullet hit his heart.
Despite the monster’s apparent invulnerability, it had, like humans, vulnerable parts.
Therefore, although Colonel Perton, transformed into a monster, appeared to have been killed instantly by some unknown power, it was actually the collective effort of everyone involved.
After receiving this news, the Law Enforcement Department was jubilant, with members of the special action team even celebrating by sliding on their knees in the office in excitement.
Within his office, Lu Xiang could hear the celebratory clamor of his subordinates.
"Shouldn’t we examine the video footage from the scene? That would expose the truth immediately, shouldn’t it?"
He glanced over at Song Lan, who was slouched on the sofa. Since yesterday, he had been in this state, repeatedly muttering, "Defeating the monster has sapped me of a great deal of my energy, plunging me into a week-long state of frailty".
The moment he arrived at work, rather than heading to his own office, he came here, sprawling on her sofa, using his tablet right in her face to kill time.
Regarding the follow-up issues, she eventually heeded Song Lan’s request for the lab to present the actual findings.
"We need to handle the footage as well, tweaking it to create the impression that the special action team killed the monster."
"But why should that be done?"
Up to now, the "concerned citizen" has performed many heroic deeds. Adding the killing of the monster-transformed Colonel Perton wouldn’t make much difference.
"Because in this incident, the ’concerned citizen’ only performed an auxiliary function. The real vanquishers of the criminal were Law Enforcers united through collective effort."
"Is this another one of your creative ways to get out of work?"
"Absolutely not."
Song Lan put down his tablet, "I want people in Sector 17 to trust the whole Law Enforcement Department, not just view it as a partner for the ’concerned citizen’."
The greater the image of a City Hero, the more insurmountable the shadow behind it.
People will not pay attention to the efforts of those who work in the shadows, but will instead attribute all achievements wrongly to the merit of the "concerned citizen".
In the future, Song Lan hopes that it will be the Law Enforcers of Sector 17 that criminals will fear, not the "concerned citizen".
This is why, upon receiving the lab’s results, emotions ran high among the Law Enforcers.
This marked the first time they were able to bring down the seemingly unbeatable felons from the "outskirts" with their own strength, which greatly boosted their morale and confidence.
"I was just browsing the websites, and there’s been a significant increase in citizens discussing us."
From their superior equipment to their bravery in standing up to the monster, and the agents who, despite seeing their captain get flung aside, did not falter even for a moment.
All this, the city’s citizens had seen with their own eyes.
No longer were they talking and guessing the identity of the "concerned citizen" after the incident, but instead paying attention to the City Heroes who are closer to them.
"See, the Law Enforcement Department is gaining more supporters."
"You even considered that."
"After all, that’s my job. The mission of the Propaganda Department is not to publicize the ’concerned citizen’, but to reintroduce the entire force of Law Enforcers to the city’s people."
For Song Lan, this is an equally influential plan.
It can not only boost the morale and confidence of the Law Enforcers but also motivate them to proactively engage in their future tasks.
On days when no bountied offenders appear, the workload of the department is fixed. If others do more work, they will naturally have to do less.
According to his knowledge, the Statistics Department has even started voluntarily helping them compile data for the Law Enforcement Handbook.
And when the strength of the Law Enforcers becomes so formidable that they no longer require the assistance of the "concerned citizen", he can gracefully retire.
As the saying goes, "What use is a person who can fight?"
In the outside world, power speaks. Only by rapidly developing the power of the Law Enforcers can one survive. Otherwise, working alone, one is bound to be overwhelmed eventually.
In fact, their combat strength has significantly increased in recent times.
After receiving the support of Tesla Tech armaments, local criminals have become pushovers. Song Lan believes that even if another Chai Ke Group surfaced now, the Law Enforcers could round them all up effortlessly, without the need for the "concerned citizen".
"Director Lu."
By this point, he had lounged around in Lu Xiang’s office for a day and a half.
Song Lan genuinely hoped that Lu Xiang would be understanding, "Since the culprits have been caught, and the follow-up interrogation does not concern me, shouldn’t you uphold your promise and grant me a week’s leave?"
"If I were to give you a vacation, what do you plan to do?"
"Nothing at all."
"Huh?"
"I will not get out of bed for the entire day, keep my tablet plugged in and fully enjoy the leisure vacation time brings."
Song Lan proudly declared. With the technology of 2166, one can have a wide range of entertainment experiences without ever leaving the bed.
"Staying in bed..."
Lu Xiang tilted her head pondering, "I saw online that people prefer to travel during vacations, to experience cultures they’ve never seen before. Have you ever considered going on a vacation?"
"Travel? Why are you suddenly bringing this up?"
Song Lan asked cautiously.
"I suddenly remembered I’ve been busy ever since coming to Sector 17. Now that the situation has stabilized, perhaps it’s time for a short vacation."
Lu Xiang asked, "If I decide to go traveling, would you like to join me?"
