Chapter 162: Chapter 162: Ticket to the New Era_1
"The speech in the Central Square was once again forcibly terminated.
A loud bang was heard, followed by a billowing cloud of dust, when a high-altitude object hit the ground.
Lu Xiang’s expression didn’t relax at all. He constantly focused his sight through the scope on the point of impact, as the bang just now didn’t seem to be caused by a human body falling.
"Doug, take your first squad to check the situation immediately."
"Roger."
After handing over the hacker, Doug led his squad hurriedly towards the fall point of the high-altitude object. They hadn’t even gotten close when a fast-moving object rushed out of the smoke. Doug, who was in the path of the object, was sent flying by a slap before he could even react.
Even with his exoskeleton armor, he only stopped after he had made a deep pit in the wall.
Lu Xiang, situated in a high-rise building, kept pulling the trigger. The fast- sprinting object didn’t avoid or dodge, allowing the bullets to hit its back.
The bullets hitting his back merely produced a few sparks on his pitch-black shell before they were deflected.
Screams could be heard from the crowd. When they got a clear view of the monster that had rushed out of the smoke, they scrambled to escape without consideration. Those whose legs went weak from fear were quickly pushed to the ground.
They had never seen such a monster before.
It only maintained the silhouette of a human form, but its entire body was covered in a black shell. Its arms had extended to the point where they touched the ground, and its claws left deep marks merely by grazing the ground. On its swinging long tail were razor-sharp spikes, bisecting any object blocking its path.
Its body was even larger than the Law Enforcers in their exoskeleton armor, with every step it took causing a thunderous sound akin to a heavy hammer striking the ground.
The Central Square was in chaos. The rampaging monster ignored all the bullets shot at it from behind. At this moment, it seemed to have eyes only for Aureliano.
"Ma...Master..."
Even Elmon was stunned by the monster that charged out of the smoke. He instinctively took a step back, "Wh...What is that?"
"How would I know."
Song Lan, who was ready to clock out and head home, had no choice but to change her course, "These criminals sneaking in from ’outside’ are all as strong as monsters."
..................
Meanwhile, somewhere in the Twelfth Nation.
"CTEA-32, so they’ve really managed to get their hands on those injections."
The man with the crew cut retracted some of his smile. This was indeed the reason he anonymously sent the information to Lu Xiang.
Compared to a few anarchists plotting to assassinate the mayoral candidate, the injections swiftly circulating in the black market lately posed a more serious problem.
A biological shell that regular weapons couldn’t penetrate, sharp spikes that could easily tear open bulletproof coatings, and the rawest of primal combat instincts.
The live broadcast from Area Seventeen had already demonstrated that several Law Enforcers in exoskeleton armor and armed with anti-material weaponry couldn’t combat such creatures. If it weren’t focusing entirely on Aureliano on the podium, its mere presence might’ve caused heavy losses to Area Seventeen’s pride - the Special Action Group.
This was a ticket for the remnants of the old era to venture into the new age.
It was cheap to make, easy to carry, and any civilian, even without professional training, could turn into a monster capable of single-handedly wiping out an elite squad after an injection.
The sole downside was that CTEA-32 was a one-way ticket.
Once the transformation was complete, there would be no turning back.
The consciousness of the injector would be worn down under the domination of the desire to kill, hence the obvious limitations of these injections. They couldn’t create a group of soldiers, only a gang of terrorists committed to indiscriminate killing.
"So that’s the real reason you turned on the live broadcast."
Luo Keling understood.
"If they can’t even handle a single monster, there’s no way they can control the whole border trade line. Their biggest enemy is the manufacturer of these injections."
"The outcome is already very clear."
Luo Keling glanced at the monster approaching the podium, as even the Law Enforcers’ Special Action Group couldn’t halt its stride. The amateur bodyguards brought by Aureliano stood even less of a chance.
She could already foresee the next sequence of events.
After tearing Aureliano apart, the monster would continue its indiscriminate massacre in the center of the commercial area in Central Square, until the Law Enforcers found a way to deal with it.
"For the sake of your mental health, I suggest you don’t watch what follows."
Her job was to protect her boss’s physical safety; mental safety was naturally a part of it as well.
"Hey, Ke Ling, don’t block me, the crucial part is coming up."
"Hm?"
Luo Keling moved aside and looked at the screen with doubt.
The monster was very close to Aureliano now, appearing about to rush into the crowd and unleash a bloodbath before even reaching the podium.
seconds?
Or perhaps even less time.
After that, all that would be left on the screen would be a sea of blood.
The next moment, Luo Keling’s pupils constricted, a chill ascending to her heart.
The monster, charging towards the podium with an unstoppable momentum, fell to the ground in the blink of an eye. The sudden change in scene seemed extremely unnatural, as one moment it was lifting its forelimb and the next it was still, a few minutes’ time seeming to have been quickly forwarded as if somebody had dragged the progress bar back.
Yet, they were watching a live broadcast of what was currently happening in the commercial area of Area Seventeen, everything was connecting to them in real time!
"No matter how many times you see such an ability, it always feels terrifying."
The crew cut man broke the silence in the room.
He had spent a fair sum of money last time to get a tape from Ophir that was making waves at the Gold Diggers’ Bar.
This time, for the sake of understanding what was happening, he was intently focused on the live broadcast screen.
Yet the result was exactly the same as before. Not only could he not identify the "good Samaritans" in the crowd, he didn’t even know how the monster had fallen.
For the people in the commercial area, the flow of time was undoubtedly continuous. They continued their previous actions, running around in panic.
It was only after a dozen seconds that someone shouted that the monster had fallen. The fleeing crowd then realized what had happened and stopped, watching unbelievingly at the deep pit created by the fallen monster on the ground.
They hadn’t heard the noise made by the falling monster at all.
...
Meanwhile.
Elmon regained his senses and found that Song Lan had some time flipped over and mounted a bicycle parked by the side of the road.
The usual comforting feeling.
As expected,
Master is the strongest!
"Master, Master!"
He followed with a light jog, "How did you take it down?"
"How would I know... Maybe it didn’t step properly and accidentally killed itself."
Song Lan quietly pedaled her bicycle, leaving the clamor from the commercial area behind her. "Don’t obsess about this and that all the time, a peaceful and ordinary life is the ultimate goal."
