Chapter 114: Chapter 114: Winner is Justice_1
One day later, in the dead of night.
In the intensive care unit of Yiqi Prosthesis Hospital in the seventeenth district.
When Pero opened his eyes, his first sight was a flurry of system error notifications.
His military-grade thermally-activated cutting blade was utterly ruined. His full-body prosthetics were 83% damaged--this was undoubtedly the most serious injury he had ever sustained.
"The prosthetic doctor said he could only barely maintain your bodily functions. Full repairs on your damaged prosthetics would require a trip to the central region."
Xu Xi walked over to the window, looked down at Pero, her eyes filled with pity.
They all knew the certainly of what awaited Pero once he returned to the central region: being charged as a scapegoat for changing plans without authorization, foolhardily transferring government felons into public outskirt prisons which directly led to Aishi’s successful jailbreak. All these crimes were pinned on Pero, who would be sent to military court before he could even make it to the prosthetics hospital.
What awaited him was either imprisonment for hundreds of years or a death sentence.
"I’ve truthfully reported the situation in the seventeenth district."
Xu Xi shrugged, while she felt pity for him, she would not hesitate to throw a team member under the bus when necessary. Plus, she only stated facts without any exaggeration.
It was a fact that Pero lost it right after arriving in the seventeenth district which caused a series of tragedies that followed.
More importantly, Pero didn’t win this time.
He was not only unable to kill those who came to rescue Aishi in the chaos, but was also knocked out cold by them. That he survived such an attack was considered a miracle by the prosthetic doctors.
While she tried to distance herself from these events, she could foresee her situation would not be any better upon her return to HQ.
"As your former teammate, the most I can do is to ’accidentally’ let you slip away."
With his severe injuries and identity, Pero would not be left alone by the various undercover "officials" within United Government cities. Even if he escaped to the "outside world", the criminals there have been itching to get his head for a long time.
Xu Xi did not intend to think further from Pero’s perspective.
One makes their own fate. Pero brought his current predicament upon himself. She was harmed quite a bit by him and the fact that she didn’t vent her anger on the unconscious Pero was solely due to their camaraderie.
"Before we part ways, there’s one thing I want to ask--what’s your beef with the ’Concerned Citizen’?"
Looking back, Pero started acting insane after he heard about the "Concerned Citizen" situation.
Back then, they hadn’t even entered the seventeenth district but word of the "Concerned Citizen" had already reached the rest houses in the "outside world". She still remembered Pero’s face darkening after he read the quickly-spreading news on the internet.
Perhaps the outcome of today was decided at that moment.
"There’s no hatred. I didn’t even know this person existed before this."
Pero on the hospital bed gave Xu Xi unexpected answer.
"Then why did you..."
"Because he executed Angel Foster, Chai Ke, Phine Elnium, Dorago Safron, and the spies the Foster family planted in the seventeenth district."
Pero listed all the names in one breath.
The names he mentioned represented that the "Concerned Citizen" had almost completely eradicated the spies that the Foster family planted in the seventeenth district. It was equivalent to driving them out of the city.
However, he couldn’t even pass judgement on the Sinners from the Rebel Army. Meanwhile, the United Government ordered him to escort the Witch of the Snow, Aishi, safely to the First Region, as if he, assigned to transport the criminal, was not the executor of justice, but a mere errand runner.
In reality, deep down in his heart, he knew that he couldn’t answer Roger’s question back at the Gold Diggers’ Bar.
He could not solve the problem at its root.
The United Government wouldn’t allow anyone to make a move on leaders from the big families. He was powerless to turn his gun towards Hog Foster.
However, the justice he viewed as unattainable was achieved by another person.
"Jealousy."
Xu Xi got it and spoke out Pero’s thoughts.
However, she never thought that someone like him would actually feel jealousy. In her memory, Pero was a man incessantly talking about justice. Apart from this, he had no personal interests or favorite things. If his life had no happiness, where would jealousy come from?
But now she knew, what aroused Pero’s jealousy was someone who was more thorough than him.
Even if he had to face the big families in the central region or even the entire United Government.
It was under his jealous drive that he became restless, clearing criminals that were unrelated to their mission, secretly meeting with former mayor Lyon Seabot, and eagerly wanting to execute Aishi then and there.
"Everything you did has deviated from its original path."
Xu Xi said, "Now, you’re just a loser trying to prove you’re no worse than the ’Concerned Citizen’."
Regrettably, even in this last stand, Pero still failed to beat his opponent.
After all, the "Concerned Citizen" never made a mistake.
Only those who win are sung praises. The world has always been so.
"The next time we see each other, we will be enemies."
Xu Xi bent down to straighten Pero’s blanket and discreetly slipped a bank card under his pillow.
After finishing all this, she turned and walked towards the doorway of the hospital room.
The sound of her footsteps was so soft that it couldn’t be made out clearly, as if she had never been here.
........................
Simultaneously, in the "outside world".
"A little further and we’ll reach the first rest house."
Under the cloak of the night, stood a mesmerizing woman at an intersection, her silver-white hair reached her waist, her icy blue eyes filled with indifference held "Rat’s" gaze.
This was "Rat’s" first time leaving the seventeenth district, setting foot in the much-coveted "outside world".
He left behind his painstakingly built enterprises, had no henchmen by his side, everything needed to restart.
He didn’t know if he was imagining things, but he felt the wind in the "outside world" was much colder than in the seventeenth district.
"Um... Sister Aishi."
"Just say what you want."
"I was wondering, does your group still have vacancies? Don’t judge me by my appearance, I’m quite experienced in human resource management."
"Rat" couldn’t remember the last time he had been so humble.
However, things were different now. He was penniless with no kin to rely on.
The only thing left of him was a bounty notice with his picture on it.
"Wanted:"
"Rebel Army: Rat"
"1,830,000 volts"
This was a number he couldn’t even dream of.
The internet was abuzz about him single-handedly rescuing a United Government prisoner from the outskirt prison.
He was now world-famous.
But the current "Rat" couldn’t muster any happiness. He faced Aishi, on the verge of tears, "I can work without salary, just food and accommodation will do!"
