Chapter 1129: Chapter 958: Unnatural Death
To become a pure Consciousness Entity, casting aside one’s frail flesh is a necessary path for everyone.
Long ago, during the dark ages, the Church began to greatly propagate the importance of asceticism. This life filled with suffering, apart from satisfying some "Deities’" harmful predilections, was also to let believers gradually adapt to the process of spiritual and physical dissociation.
Even at the height of Spiritual Energy civilization, only a select few could complete the Ceremony.
They were either the cream of the crop among Ascetics who, after prolonged starvation and torment, had elevated their spirits; or they were individuals of unique talent who had also received the favor of a "Deity".
Yet a situation like the universal transformation into Consciousness Entities had never appeared in history.
For the majority of life in this world, both soul and spirit need to rely on the body to exist—forcibly separating the two would lead to their rapid dissolution.
This meant that, after many years, their fellow villagers had mastered a technology more advanced than that of the past upper world.
From afar, Lu Xiang watched the Shadow in front of him swell a whole size larger due to extreme anger; the space they were in also became overlapping and distorted due to the influence of Psychic Abilities.
The once rectangular table, now warped into an inverted triangle, collapsed inward like a Black Hole, with abrupt holes scattered throughout the room.
After Song Lan stated their purpose, the spatial distortion became even more pronounced.
Sensing the impending doom, prisoners scattered like birds and beasts. They all remembered vividly what had happened the last time the Judge had been enraged.
Among the opponents they had encountered so far, the power of the Judge was only second to "Corruption", the latter being the product of stolen Spiritual Energy, forcibly accumulated from powers that were never their own.
The moment Lu Xiang saw the Judge, her occupational habit kicked in.
She reflexively began to assess the other party’s Psychic Abilities strength, which was once the responsibility of an upper world Guide. Although it was never openly discussed, everyone knew that there was a hierarchy among "Deities". After each had just completed their ascension Ceremony, it was her job to perform the assessment.
In that era, as Song Lan would put it, the presently-swollen Shadow was undoubtedly a cricket of superior quality. After getting acquainted with the rules of the upper world and extensively developing believers, it could very likely become a prominent entity in the upper world.
Especially valuable after the pathways to the upper world had been sealed off.
Aside from innate talent, Lu Xiang couldn’t think of any other possibility.
It’s just a pity that the path they chose from the very beginning determined their future character. If this cricket of superior quality had met Song Lan at the start, then the current scene would be everyone sitting down, brewing a cup of Jasmine tea, and calmly discussing the odd tales of the prison block.
Song Lan proceeded with the original plan they had discussed downstairs, trying to move the Judge with sincerity, "The whole thing started with your pet attacking me on the way back. Legally speaking, this should be considered self-defense. You should be familiar with your pet, describing it as a large and ferocious beast is not an exaggeration. According to the United Government’s latest laws, keeping such pets requires a permit, and their movements need to be strictly limited, or else serious injuries could occur."
Song Lan’s rapid-fire argument had a certain effect, causing the Judge, itching to act, to fall into brief hesitation.
Of course, the hesitation was not because he was touched by Song Lan’s sincerity, but rather he doubted the sanity of someone who would talk about United Government laws.
This is the most heavily guarded prison of the United Government, where all prisoners are labeled as "the most unforgivable Sinners". How could a law-abiding citizen appear in such a place?
Another thing that puzzled the Judge was that he didn’t know where these two had emerged from. Without any clues, yet they were able to easily kill the Monkfish.
Defeating the Monkfish was not difficult, but even for him, completely eliminating it required considerable effort.
Yet the patrol reported to him that there wasn’t much commotion before the Monkfish’s death; the alley also showed few traces of a battle, and the Monkfish had been dead for some time when the body was found.
Seeing that the Judge had fallen into hesitation, Song Lan pressed his advantage, "Your pet is just too aggressive. For self-defense, my already ailment-ridden waist was further aggravated during the fight, to the point where it might lead to severe complications in the future."
This Dumb Bird is adding his own nonsense!
The more Lu Xiang listened, the more wrong it sounded. That line was anything but sincere and was actually meant for her ears—medical reports from the Oasis had already confirmed Song Lan’s frequent complaints of back pain, stomachaches, and headaches were all feigned; his health was far better than average!
Medical reports indicated that only the Nothingness’ chronic leg pain was real.
"Are you trying to garner my sympathy?"
The Judge’s figure flitted about, the spreading darkness had already sealed off the route they had taken earlier.
If anyone besides the trio were located in the arena, they would notice that the entire building was now engulfed by a sinister black energy, with black mist rolling across the ground like poison, and walls twisted and corroded.
Lu Xiang suspected that there might be a connection between the Judge’s abilities and toxicity.
