Chapter 1115: Chapter 952: Miniature Garden
"Prisoners are assigned to different areas after imprisonment according to their crimes."
This is a corridor so long it seems never to end, leading the way for Song Lan and Lu Xiang is a robot navigator miss wearing a professional suit dress with a graceful human silhouette.
The sound of her high heels tapping rhythmically on the floor is almost the only sound in this space other than her narration.
The term "silhouette" is used because the navigator miss’s face lacks features, which, in this dimly lit environment, could potentially evoke the primal fear of the uncanny valley effect.
The navigator miss wears a holographic electronic watch, with a pale blue halo circling her wrist. She taps the screen of the watch with her index finger a few times, and a holographic screen appears in front of them both.
"A Area has an average daily work duration of 8 hours, providing stable three meals a day with meal times at 8:15 AM, 11:45 AM, and 6:30 PM respectively. The area provides basic living facilities, and has entertainment facilities such as a chess and card room, amusement park, arcade, and hot spring."
A simulated image of A Area appears on the holographic projection; it doesn’t look anything like a prison from the outside, but more like an antique small city.
There are no cells for imprisoning criminals; instead, they become residents of this small town.
And with 8 hours of work and various facilities...
For Song Lan, who was accustomed to the life in a small border town, he thought that if this were publicized, many people would be willing to give up a life of constantly living on the edge and would opt to go to prison to become inmates immediately.
Song Lan is curious, "What exactly are the work assignments? Operating sewing machines? Or some manual labor?"
As far as he knows, there is usually no interaction between the prison and The First Region.
"There are many types of work, all of which are essential for the maintenance of A Area and human society stability."
"Most political prisoners will be sent here, but at least it requires the level of a Councilor or higher to enjoy such treatment."
Lu Xiang, who has some inside information, reminds them that for those politicians with merit but who have committed unforgivable crimes, being sent to A Area is the most decent way to exit the stage. With the town’s full range of infrastructure, they can indeed completely leave behind the intrigue of politics and live a slower-paced life.
"B Area has an average daily work duration of 14 hours. At 2:00 AM every day, we distribute essential supplies for their daily lives according to the real-time population of the prison zone, and the range of activities for prisoners will be limited. This region only provides basic facilities for survival, and the prisoners are required to maintain them independently."
B Area is the most prison-like among the four zones.
Tall walls enclose everyone within, and from the moment they enter B Area, they must shoulder the responsibility of maintaining the prison’s daily operations.
The supply of electricity and water, after precise calculations from artificial intelligence, will only be provided with basic living materials to the prisoners after they have completed the daily maintenance work. Even if one person slacks off, the entire prison zone may face the crisis of power outage and water disruption.
Of course, those confined here are the most vicious criminals, and a life of following the rules is tantamount to killing them, so many B Area inmates have long been brewing plans to escape.
"C Area has an average work duration of 23.5 hours, no supply of materials, no basic infrastructure for survival, and their daily labor will provide energy for D Zone."
The overhead view on the holographic projection is indeed familiar; Song Lan remembers that Lu Xiang showed him the plan of The First Region before they headed for work, and the two look identical, except those skyscrapers have now become ruins, and the entire city seems to have experienced an unprecedented calamity, leaving only the remnants of past civilization on this land.
The navigator miss says, "After nightfall, C Area will also see a large number of wandering mutants or malfunctioning machines, which will attack all prisoners indiscriminately. This is to force the prisoners to gather together before nightfall, making it easier for the people from D Zone to find them."
At this point, Song Lan sees the highlighted places in the projection, which is the only area in C Zone that has not been destroyed. The magnificent buildings stand in stark contrast to the broken streets around, appearing as the last spark of civilization.
"As for Mr. Benjamin Abel, whom you mentioned, he is currently in C Zone."
The navigator miss taps on the screen, zooming in the overhead view significantly until it focuses on a half-mechanical person sweating and working in a pile of rubble.
Here, the time is consistent with that of the "outside" world; when the first light of dawn just begins to sprinkle on this land, Benjamin, like others around him, has already been busy for a long time.
The formidable founder of The Keepers has heavy chains bound over his shoulders, straining with all his might to pull the mining cart filled with dazzling ore to the delivery point.
The navigator miss kindly explains, "These ores are to provide sufficient power to D Zone. The counters on their wrists will record their working time and number of tasks completed. Messengers from D Zone will visit C Area’s gathering places every evening to check on the work."
