Chapter 96: Her Little Boy

Aurora stopped, her shoulders shaking, fists clenched. "No, Derek, he’s just a boy. He couldn’t have gone far. Someone must’ve seen him—someone must know where he is."

She spun around, scanning the parkgoers.

Parents playing with their kids, couples walking hand-in-hand, everyone seemed so normal.

But Leo wasn’t there.

Ava approached slowly, wringing her hands. "Aurora, I’m so sorry... I don’t know how this happened. I just looked away for a second... and he was gone." Her voice cracked, guilt filling every word.

Aurora turned to her, her expression softening despite the storm of fear inside her. "It’s not your fault, Ava. We’ll find him. We have to find him."

But her words were more for herself than anyone else.

She couldn’t even begin to think about what would happen if they didn’t.

Just then, Aurora’s phone buzzed.

She snatched it from her pocket, hope flooding her for a moment as she thought it might be the police with good news.

But when she glanced at the screen, it was just a message from Lucas: We’re still here. Let me know if you need anything.

She stuffed the phone back into her jacket, her chest tight.

She couldn’t talk to Lucas right now, not until she had answers.

She needed to be doing something, anything that would bring Leo back to her.

"Let’s go to the parking lot," she said suddenly, her voice sharp with determination. "If he wandered off, someone might’ve seen him near the cars."

Derek sighed, knowing it was likely a dead end, but nodded. "Alright. We’ll check."

The four of them made their way toward the lot, the setting sun casting long shadows across the park.

Aurora’s eyes were everywhere—every child’s face, every movement, searching for the familiar flash of Leo’s bright smile.

But nothing.

When they reached the lot, it was mostly empty, save for a few scattered cars.

No sign of Leo.

Aurora stood still for a moment, her breath coming in short gasps.

She hadn’t realized how fast her heart had been racing until now.

She closed her eyes, trying to keep it together, but all she could see was Leo.

Her little boy, lost and alone.

Suddenly, she felt a small tug on her hand.

She opened her eyes to see Aria, her wide, innocent eyes looking up at her.

"Mommy," Aria whispered, her tiny voice trembling. "Where’s Leo? Why can’t we find him?"

Aurora knelt down, pulling Aria into her arms, fighting back tears. "We’re going to find him, sweetheart. Don’t worry. We’re going to find your brother."

Aria buried her face in Aurora’s shoulder, nodding. "He’s hiding, right? Like hide-and-seek?"

Aurora forced a smile, even though it felt like her heart was breaking. "Maybe, baby. Maybe he’s just hiding."

But deep down, she feared something far worse.

Before she could stand back up, Derek’s phone rang.

He stepped away to answer it, his voice tense as he spoke into the receiver.

Aurora watched him, her heart thudding in her chest.

Was this it?

Did they find him?

After what felt like forever, Derek returned, his expression grim.

"That was the police," he said quietly. "They’re expanding the search further into the city. They’ve also put out an Amber Alert."

Aurora swallowed hard, her hand tightening around Aria’s. "What... what does that mean? Do they think he’s been taken?"

Derek hesitated, not wanting to say the words. "It’s just a precaution. They want to cover all possibilities."

Ava gasped softly, her hands covering her mouth.

Aurora stood up, her whole body trembling. "No... no, he’s here. He has to be here."

"Aurora," Derek said gently, "they’re doing everything they can. We just need to stay calm."

"Calm?" Aurora’s voice was a mixture of anger and fear. "How am I supposed to stay calm when my son is missing?!"

She pushed past Derek, heading back toward the park.

She could hear him calling after her, but she didn’t care.

All she could think about was Leo.

Where was he? Was he scared? Was he crying for her?

Every step she took felt heavier than the last, as if the world itself was closing in on her.

Ava ran to catch up, breathless. "Aurora, please, we need to let the police handle this."

Aurora stopped, spinning around to face her. "What if they don’t find him? What if something happens to him? How am I supposed to just stand here and wait?!"

Before Ava could respond, a patrol car pulled up to the park entrance, lights flashing.

Two officers stepped out, one of them heading straight toward Aurora and Derek.

"Mrs. Aurora?" the officer asked, his face sympathetic. "We’ve just received word that a vehicle matching the description of a suspicious van was spotted a few miles from here. We’re following up on that lead now."

Aurora’s heart nearly stopped. "A van?" Her voice was barely above a whisper. "He was taken?"

The officer held up a hand. "We don’t know that for sure yet, ma’am. We’re just following all leads."

But Aurora knew. Deep down, she knew. Leo was gone.

The officer’s radio crackled, and he stepped away to take the call.

As Aurora stood there, the world around her seemed to blur, her mind struggling to comprehend the horror of what was happening.

Derek came up beside her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "We’ll find him, Aurora. I promise."

Aurora closed her eyes, her heart aching with the weight of that promise.

She wanted to believe him. She had to believe him. But right now, all she could feel was the emptiness where Leo should be.

And that emptiness terrified her.

---

Aurora stood there for what felt like an eternity, her mind numb, as she tried to process everything.

She kept glancing around the park as if somehow, miraculously, Leo would come running back to her, laughing as if it were all just a game.

But the truth sat like a stone in her chest.

Aria looked up at her with wide, worried eyes. "Mommy... is Leo lost?"
