Chapter 84: Five Years
Chapter 84: Five Years
Five years had passed since Aurora had last set foot in Sumturm City.
She stood at the baggage claim of the busy airport with her five-year-old twins, Leo and Aria, by her side.
The two children were practically bouncing with excitement, their matching blue eyes wide with curiosity.
Aria, with her dark hair and rosy cheeks, clung to Aurora’s hand, while Leo, with his sandy-blond hair and serious expression, examined everything around him with quiet interest.
Though the boy shared his sister’s striking blue eyes, he had a certain calmness about him that always made Aurora smile.
Ava was already pulling some of their luggage off the conveyor belt, carefully stacking the bags onto a cart.
Aurora sighed quietly.
She hadn’t wanted to return to this city—too many memories still lingered here—but she had no choice.
Leo’s mechanical heart required a battery replacement, and LK Hospital was the best place for the procedure.
The hospital specialized in mechanical heart care and had an excellent track record, and that was what mattered most to her now.
She glanced down at her children, watching as Aria skipped in place, tugging gently on Leo’s arm.
They looked so adorable, and for a brief moment, their joyful gestures brought her out of her thoughts.
"Mommy, when are we gonna meet Daddy?" Aria asked suddenly, her sweet voice cutting through the noise of the airport.
Aurora’s heart clenched for a second, but she smiled softly at her daughter. "Sweetheart, we don’t have a daddy," she replied gently, kneeling down to meet her gaze.
"But Mommy, everyone has a daddy," Leo added, looking thoughtful. "Even my teacher has one. That means we have one too, right?"
Aurora was about to respond when a familiar voice called out from behind them. "Hey, kiddo!"
Both Leo and Aria spun around, their faces lighting up with joy.
"Uncle Derek!" they shouted in unison, rushing toward him with their arms open wide.
Derek, grinning broadly, effortlessly scooped up both twins, one in each arm, and twirled them around.
"Whoa, you two are getting heavier!" he teased, his voice full of warmth.
The twins giggled, clinging to him.
"We missed you, Uncle Derek!" Aria said, her small arms wrapped tightly around his neck.
"I missed you too, munchkins!" Derek replied, still holding them both up with ease.
Aurora stood, smiling at the sight of Derek with the children.
She walked over to him, raising an eyebrow playfully. "Took you long enough."
Derek chuckled, setting the twins back on their feet.
"I had to get chocolate for my little munchkins," he said, reaching into his jacket pocket and pulling out two small chocolate bars.
The children’s eyes lit up in excitement.
"Yay, chocolates!" they cheered, bouncing on their toes as they reached for the treats.
Aurora laughed softly, shaking her head.
She glanced over at Ava, who was now adjusting the last of their luggage.
"Let’s get going," Aurora said, grabbing a couple of bags.
Together, they moved toward the exit, the children happily munching on their chocolates, their giggles filling the air.
Aurora glanced down at them, her heart swelling with affection.
Despite everything, her children were her greatest joy, and seeing them so happy with Derek filled her with a quiet sense of contentment.
As they walked through the busy terminal,
Derek leaned over and whispered to Aurora, "It’s good to have you back."
She smiled at him, grateful for his presence.
"It’s good to be back... I think," she said softly, casting one last glance at her two little ones, who were now excitedly pointing at everything they saw as they walked.
As they made their way through the airport, Aurora couldn’t help but glance around, taking in the familiar surroundings.
It felt strange to be back in Sumturm City after so long, but seeing Leo and Aria so full of energy kept her grounded.
The last thing she wanted was for them to feel the burden of the past that still lingered in her heart.
Leo, ever the observant one, tugged on her sleeve. "Mommy, where are we going now?"
Aurora smiled down at him. "We’re going to the hotel first, sweetheart, and then we’ll head to the hospital tomorrow for your appointment."
Leo nodded seriously, as though it were the most important thing in the world. "Okay, Mommy."
Aria, holding Derek’s hand, piped up with her own question. "Uncle Derek, are you coming with us to the hospital?"
Derek grinned, giving her hand a little squeeze. "Of course I am, princess. I wouldn’t miss it for the world."
Aurora chuckled at the way Derek had always called Aria "princess," and Leo "buddy."
Despite their playful banter, she could see how much Derek cared for the twins.
He had stepped up in ways she hadn’t expected over the years, and for that, she was grateful.
As they reached the car waiting outside, Derek helped load the luggage into the trunk.
The twins, still buzzing with excitement, climbed into their seats, chatting about everything they saw at the airport.
Aurora fastened their seatbelts and slid into the passenger seat beside Derek.
Once they were on the road, Aurora took a deep breath and stared out the window, her mind drifting back to why they were really here.
Leo’s mechanical heart had been a constant worry for her since the day he was born.
The battery replacement wasn’t a major procedure, but the thought of him being in surgery always filled her with anxiety.
Derek seemed to sense her unease. He glanced over at her. "Everything’s going to be fine, Aurora. LK Hospital has the best specialists. You know that."
"I know," Aurora replied softly. "But I still worry. He’s just so young."
Derek reached over and gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. "Leo’s tough, just like his mom. He’s going to get through this, and so are you."
She smiled faintly, grateful for his support. "Thanks, Derek."
As they pulled into the hotel’s driveway, the twins immediately perked up, pressing their faces to the window.
"Wow, look at how big it is!" Aria exclaimed.
"Are we staying here, Mommy?" Leo asked, his eyes wide with awe.
Aurora nodded. "Yes, this is where we’ll be staying for a few days. Do you like it?"
The twins both nodded enthusiastically, already excited to explore.
Derek parked the car, and they all got out.
The hotel staff and Ava helped with the luggage, and soon they were making their way to their suite.
Once inside, the twins ran ahead, inspecting every corner of the spacious room.
Aria giggled as she bounced on the bed, while Leo quietly examined the view from the window, staring out at the cityscape.
Aurora watched them with a soft smile, feeling a sense of bittersweet nostalgia.
This city held so many memories—some good, some painful—but right now, her focus was on her children and making sure they felt safe and happy.
Ava came up beside her, her voice low. "You okay?"
Aurora nodded, though there was a hint of something unspoken in her eyes. "Yeah. It’s just... being back here, you know?"
"I know." Ava’s gaze followed the twins as they explored. "But things are different now. You’ve got two amazing kids, and you’re stronger than ever."
Aurora’s smile returned, more genuine this time. "Yeah, I guess I do."
"Mommy, come look!" Aria called out, waving her over. "There’s a swimming pool downstairs!"
Aurora chuckled, walking over to her daughter. "We’ll go swimming later, okay? Let’s get settled in first."
Aria beamed. "Okay!"
Leo, still by the window, turned to his mother. "Mommy, will we stay here for a long time?"
Aurora shook her head. "No, sweetie. Just long enough for your doctor’s appointment, and then we’ll go back home."
Leo looked thoughtful for a moment before nodding. "Okay."
Aurora walked over and knelt beside him. "I know this is all new and different, but everything’s going to be okay. I promise."
Leo smiled up at her, his small hand reaching for hers. "I know, Mommy."
