Chapter 46: Seventy Percent Chance
Just as Sophia was about to explain, the door to the waiting room burst open, and Lucas rushed in, his face pale with panic.
"Sophia!" Lucas gasped, his voice frantic. "How is Aurora? I saw the accident... it’s all over the internet. I rushed here as fast as I could."
Hades growled low in his throat, his eyes narrowing in suspicion. "Did you call him to come here?" he snapped at Sophia.
Sophia shook her head, exasperated. "No. I’ve been too concerned about Aurora to think of calling anyone."
Lucas, ignoring Hades’s hostility, turned to Sophia, his voice shaky. "How is she? Please, tell me."
Sophia hesitated, then sighed. "It’s bad, Lucas. The doctors said there’s a 70 percent chance she might not make it."
Lucas staggered, his face draining of colour.
His hands trembled, and tears welled up in his eyes. "No... no, this can’t be happening," he whispered, on the verge of breaking down.
Hades scoffed, rolling his eyes. "What a crybaby," he muttered under his breath. "What does Aurora even see in him?"
Sophia shot Hades a judgmental look.
Internally, she was screaming at his hypocrisy.
This was the same man who had cried over losing a major deal, who had sobbed in her arms during moments of defeat. And she had been there, comforting him, helping him find a way out of his failures.
Now, he dared to mock Lucas for his emotions?
"Can we focus?" Hades growled, brushing off her glare. "You said there’s another way. What is it?"
Sophia sighed, turning her attention back to the matter at hand. "There is a way to help Aurora... but it’ll only work if you both agree to it."
Hades and Lucas both tensed, exchanging wary glances.
Despite their mutual hatred, they were united in their concern for Aurora.
Lucas, still visibly shaken, nodded. "I’ll do anything," he said quickly.
Hades, though more sceptical, crossed his arms and gave a curt nod. "Fine. Whatever it takes."
Sophia inhaled deeply. "Aurora has a strong connection to Lucas because of the mate bond. And now, because she’s pregnant—"
Lucas’s head snapped up, his eyes wide in disbelief.
"Pregnant?" he interrupted, his voice hoarse. "Aurora’s pregnant?"
Sophia nodded. "Yes. The doctor said she’s carrying twins. But that connection between her, you, and the babies—it’s the key. In order to save her, Lucas, you need to mark her as your mate."
Hades exploded. "What?!"
The anger in his voice was clear, the growl echoing in the small room.
"Why him? Why can’t I be the one to mark her?" His eyes were wild with rage, refusing to accept what Sophia was suggesting.
Sophia met his furious gaze with a cold, steady glare. "Because she’s not your mate, Hades. Lucas is her fated mate, and the bond between them—especially now with the babies—has to be completed. Lucas has never marked her."
Lucas, his face still stunned by the revelation of Aurora’s pregnancy, nodded weakly. "It’s true," he murmured. "I never got the chance to mark her."
Hades clenched his fists, his fury barely contained. "This is ridiculous. There has to be another way!"
Sophia’s expression softened, but her resolve remained firm. "No, Hades. This is the only way. In ancient times, when a mate hadn’t marked their partner and they were on the verge of death, completing the bond was the only thing that could save them. If Lucas marks her, she’ll heal."
Hades snarled, his frustration boiling over. He grabbed Sophia by the arm, his grip tight. "Is this your way of getting revenge? Is this payback for the documentary I took from you?"
Sophia yanked her arm out of his grasp, glaring at him. "No, Hades. This isn’t about you or me. I’m trying to save my friend. This is what a good friend does—something you wouldn’t understand."
The tension between them was evident, and Lucas, sensing the growing hostility, stepped in. "We need to focus on what’s important right now. Aurora’s life is hanging in the balance. If marking her is the solution, we need to figure out how to do it while she’s in the OR."
Hades, still fuming, turned to Lucas, his eyes flashing with anger. "No! No one is marking Aurora while she’s in surgery. I’m not letting you take her away from that operating room!"
Lucas bristled at Hades’s challenge, his own frustration mounting. "I’m not taking her away from anything! But if this is what needs to be done to save her, then I’ll do it, whether you like it or not."
The two men stood toe-to-toe, ready to tear each other apart.
Then, the door to the waiting room opened.
Dr. Peters stepped out, her face grim.
Both Hades and Lucas immediately turned their attention to her.
"I’m sorry," the doctor began, her voice heavy with exhaustion. "But we’ve done everything we can. Aurora’s condition is too critical for us to continue here. We’re going to have to move her from the hospital."
The weight of her words sank in, and both Hades and Lucas were momentarily stunned into silence.
"H-How can that be?" Hades stuttered, his voice laced with panic. "You’re just giving up on her?"
Dr. Peters softened her gaze, her expression sympathetic. "We’re not giving up. We’ve done everything humanly possible. But Aurora requires specialized care that our hospital can’t provide."
Lucas’s face darkened. "What kind of specialized care?"
"The centre at LK Hospital," the doctor explained, "has advanced equipment and a team of experts who can better manage her condition."
Hades’s eyes narrowed, his frustration barely restrained. "How long will it take to transfer her?"
"We’ll have the ambulance ready within twenty minutes," Dr. Peters replied.
Sophia, who had been silently observing, spoke up. "Can we go with her?"
The doctor nodded. "Yes, you can follow the ambulance. But please... prepare yourselves for the worst."
As the doctor turned to leave, Hades called out, "Wait!"
Dr. Peters paused, her gaze filled with a quiet understanding.
"What’s the probability of... of her surviving?" Hades’s voice faltered, barely above a whisper.
The doctor hesitated, her silence heavy with implication. "I’d say... less than twenty percent."
