Chapter 102: Memory Loss
Just then, the door opened quietly, and Gabriel entered, pushing a wheelchair ahead of him.
He had been walking carefully, assuming Lucas was still asleep, but when he looked up, he saw Lucas sitting up, smiling at the children.
Gabriel’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, but his expression softened as he walked further into the room.
"Well, it looks like you’ve got a couple of excellent nurses here, sir," he remarked with a smile.
Lucas smiled faintly. "Yeah, they’ve been taking good care of me."
Gabriel stopped by the bed, his gaze flickering to Lucas’s legs briefly before settling back on his face. "I brought your wheelchair. Thought you might want to move around a bit later, sir."
Lucas glanced at the wheelchair, the reality of his situation settling back in.
He gave a small nod. "Thanks, Gabriel."
Gabriel moved closer and positioned the wheelchair beside the bed, extending a hand to help Lucas into it.
With effort, Lucas shifted his upper body, bracing himself against Gabriel’s support as he was carefully eased from the bed into the wheelchair.
His legs remained unresponsive, a sharp reminder of his current condition, but Gabriel was gentle, making sure Lucas was comfortable before slowly wheeling him away from the bed.
Once Lucas was settled, Gabriel leaned down slightly, lowering his voice as he spoke. "Sir, how are you feeling today? Any better?"
Lucas nodded, though the fatigue still clung to him. "Better than yesterday, I think. Still pretty weak, though."
Gabriel glanced at the door, where Leo and Aria had just left, likely giving Lucas some space. "The kids have been keeping you company, I see."
Lucas’s lips twitched into a small smile. "Yeah, they’ve been... good company."
Gabriel nodded in acknowledgment but then cleared his throat, his expression growing a bit more serious. "Mrs. Julia mentioned she wanted to speak with you. She said it was urgent."
At the mention of Julia, Lucas’s mood visibly shifted.
His smile faded, and his brow furrowed in mild annoyance.
He scoffed under his breath, shaking his head. "Julia... What could she possibly want to talk about, if not money?"
Gabriel felt a slight discomfort in the air, unsure how to respond to his boss speaking so negatively about his own wife.
Gabriel had never fully understood the strain between Lucas and Julia, but it wasn’t his place to pry.
Still, it felt odd hearing Lucas speak with such coldness.
Swallowing the unease, Gabriel decided to tread carefully.
"But sir, it could be something more important," Gabriel spoke cautiously, trying to offer a neutral perspective.
Lucas let out a dry chuckle. "I’ve been married to her for over four years. Trust me, if there’s anyone who knows Julia’s priorities, it’s me."
He sighed, his eyes distant as if recalling memories he didn’t care to relive. "Whatever this so-called urgent matter is, I’m sure it can wait."
Gabriel didn’t press further.
He could sense that there was no point in trying to persuade Lucas on the topic of Julia, but he did what he always did—his job.
"Understood, sir," Gabriel replied, though he couldn’t help but wonder about the deeper issues that existed between Lucas and his wife.
Lucas shifted the conversation, turning his focus elsewhere.
"What about Caleb?" he asked, a hint of concern in his voice.
Caleb had been his joy, and the idea of something happening to him clearly troubled Lucas more than whatever Julia might have to say.
Gabriel straightened up, quickly responding. "I haven’t received any calls from Caleb yet, so he’s fine, sir. I’m keeping a close watch."
At Gabriel’s words, Lucas’s face softened in relief.
"Good," he muttered. "There’s no need for any meetings with Julia right now. I’ll be heading home later anyway."
Gabriel said nothing further, sensing that Lucas had already made up his mind.
He focused on moving the wheelchair, guiding Lucas through the quiet hallway.
The light streaming through the windows cast long shadows along the floor, adding a sense of calm to the morning.
As they moved, Lucas’s thoughts drifted.
His mind wandered to Leo and Aria.
Despite the confusion of not knowing them, their presence had been strangely comforting.
The way Leo had called him "Daddy" felt natural, even if Lucas doesnt know them.
For reasons he couldn’t quite explain, there was a growing desire within him to protect them, to be the father they believed him to be, even if he didn’t fully understand how.
Gabriel’s voice broke through his thoughts as they neared the stairs. "Sir, will you be meeting with the doctor again today?"
Lucas shrugged, indifferent. "I suppose I’ll have to."
Afterwards, Gabriel wheeled Lucas into the living room, where Aurora was already standing, waiting by the window.
She turned the moment she heard them enter, her expression calm but carrying an air of politeness that reminded Lucas of their distant connection.
She stepped closer to greet them.
"How are you feeling today, Mr. Lucas?" Aurora asked, her tone professional yet concerned.
Lucas gave a slight nod, shifting in the wheelchair to face her. "Better than yesterday. Rest did me some good."
Aurora allowed a small smile to cross her lips. "I’m glad to hear that. Thank you... for yesterday."
Lucas frowned slightly, his confusion apparent. "For what?"
"For everything," Aurora clarified softly. "For helping with Leo, for being there. I appreciate it."
Lucas shook his head dismissively. "There’s nothing to thank me for, really. I didn’t do much."
Aurora seemed to hesitate for a moment, choosing her next words carefully.
"I also wanted to mention..." she began, her voice softer now. "You don’t have to be worried about how the kids call you ’Daddy.’ They don’t mean to make things uncomfortable."
As soon as the words left her mouth, Aurora felt a wave of uncertainty.
Would he care?
Would it bother him?
She searched his face for a reaction, but Lucas just exhaled, his response casual, almost detached.
"It’s fine. They’re just kids. I wasn’t bothered by it."
Relief mixed with sadness.
He wasn’t bothered, but neither did he seem moved.
Aurora nodded, feeling the gap between them grow once more.
It was a reminder that Lucas, in his current state, was a stranger to their past—to the family they had tried to build, however complicated it had been.
When Lucas shifted in his wheelchair, signaling his desire to leave, Aurora stepped aside, her heart heavy. "Of course, Mr. Lucas."
She kept her voice steady, professional, even though her emotions were far from it.
Watching him go, a part of her longed to reach out, to bridge the distance that his memory loss had created, but she knew better.
For now, all she could do was let him go and hope that one day, the pieces might fall back into place.
