Divine Magus: Awakening
Chapter 42: Success

Chapter 42: Success

"Now, try not to scream." Mr. Joe waved his hand and a small black dagger appeared in it.

"I haven’t taught you the technique involved in doing this so just focus on staying conscious. I don’t want to see you trying to learn it." Mr. Joe waved his hand in front of Logan.

Lifting the blade above Logan, he plunged it into his legs.

Rather than scream like Mr. Joe was expecting, Logan merely grunted and clenched his fists.

"Nice resistance to pain but it’s about to get worse." Mr. Joe warned as he started to drag the blade across his leg.

Carving runes and drawing sophisticated lines on Logan’s legs, Mr. Joe’s face was steeled.

Seconds quickly flowed into minutes but even that felt too slow.

Logan felt every inch of the cuts being made on his skin.

But he ignored and persevered. This was his only way to get power now.

After what felt like an eternity, Mr. Joe pulled away from Logan.

His eyes darted across the young man’s legs to ensure the accuracy of what he had done.

"Now unto the beast." Mr. Joe went to the beast’s corpse and started carving into it.

Taking this opportunity, Logan observed his legs.

They bore similar lines and runes but with a few differences yet these differences made it seem like the two sets were complete only when used together.

Turning to his teacher, Logan started to observe what he was doing.

There he could see Mr. Joe carving the same lines into the beast.

Unlike the ones on his legs, the lines and runes carved into the beast were the same as those on his legs.

Wielding the dagger skillfully, Mr. Joe soon completed the lines.

He got up and looked Logan in the eye.

"This is where it really hurts." Mr. Joe’s voice held pity.

Hearing squelching sounds, Logan turned to the corpse and could see it starting to move with slight muscle spasms.

Logan watched as its hide, muscles, and bones dissolved and mixed into one another.

The solution moved and jiggled about.

"What the hell is that?!" Logan screamed with his index finger pointing at the blob that was starting to crawl towards him.

"That liquid. Blob. Solute. Whatever it is, it is your enchantment. Do you want it or not?" Mr. Joe explained with his eyes also on the thing.

"And what if I refuse to take it?" Logan raised his eyebrow, not as an act of challenging authority but curiosity.

"Oh, that. Well since it shares bond runes with your legs, you will slowly lose that ability to walk, then your legs will rot before you die." Mr. Joe answered as he glanced at Logan.

"So do you want it in the end?" A slight smile spread on his lips.

"Yes. It’s not like I have much of a choice." Logan sighed before lying still and waiting for the blob to reach him.

When it got close to the base of the table, its body compressed until it became a near-solid before it suddenly expanded and launched itself into the air.

Landing on Logan’s chest, it slid past his torso and stopped just short of his injury caused by the enchantment.

It squelched again before entering and sending Logan into a mighty seizure.

Foam poured out of his mouth as pain ravaged his legs and spread to every other part of his body.

The pain slowly went to where his mana core was.

And luckily or otherwise, since he had lost his core, nothing happened.

Opening his mouth to scream, Logan let out an animalistic howl.

He started clawing at the straps holding him in place with fingernails that had sharpened a bit.

Growling and with bloodshot eyes, Logan appeared to be no different from a wild beast.

"It’s all up to him." Mr. Joe sighed.

***************

Inside the deepest reaches of his mind, a younger Logan was hugging his knees with tears running down his cheeks.

The young boy grew rapidly until he turned into the modern Logan.

His teary eyes had been replaced with ones full of cold fury.

Behind him, the silhouette of a giant wolf was thrashing around.

It made erratic movements that sent ripples through the empty black space that was Logan’s mind.

Every second it spent free, Logan’s figure lost coherence.

The figure stared at himself then at the beast.

Maybe if he vanished the beast would take revenge for him.

Logan’s figure turned transparent and was starting to dissipate until the memory of his parents’ death appeared.

It floated about in the dark space as an orb full of pictures.

Changing form from the angry modern-day Logan to the sad younger one, Logan’s figure gained opaqueness.

The silhouette of the wolf stopped thrashing around and focused on Logan.

Letting out a low threatening growl, it got ready to pounce.

"I shouldn’t let any midget take revenge on my behalf." The crying Logan grew into his angry version with his eyes still on the memory.

"That’s my job." He seethed through his teeth.

Charging in, the beast became more ethereal.

Mid-air and only a few meters away from Logan, the beast vanished turning into nothing.

******************

Clarity returned to Logan’s mind and he stopped clawing at the straps.

Looking at his fingers, he could see that he had peeled away a layer of his skin due to the scratches.

"That is one of the risks. That was one of the risks attached. There was all possibility of you forever becoming a beast in mind." Mr. Joe rubbed his temples, Logan had worried him.

"Or worse, your mana core could have rejected the enchantment and detonated." Mr. Joe felt like sitting.

While he enjoyed having a student, he didn’t want to rush him into enchanting his body.

"Notwithstanding, the enchantment was a success." Mr. Joe loosened the strap on Logan.

Setting his legs on the ground, he could feel the cold floor even through his shoes.

Standing up, he noticed how light his body felt.

It was time to test his new capabilities.
