Chapter 163: They’ll Never Find Out.
Olive mirrored his smile, keeping her tone light. "Of course I do. And it’s normal to miss someone you love, but Rachel’s coming back. She’s not gone for good. It’s not like she’s in prison for murder. And it’s not like you’ve killed anyone either, right?" She locked eyes with him, watching for any reaction. "No secrets to worry about coming to light when she gets back?"
Henry’s smirk faltered for a split second, and Olive’s heart skipped a beat. She had touched a nerve.
"What are you talking about?" Henry asked, a hint of unease seeping into his tone.
Olive’s smile stayed put. "Just making conversation, Henry. I’m glad we’re friends again. And yeah, you shouldn’t worry yourself too much about Rachel. She’ll be back soon."
Henry’s gaze lingered on her, his eyes searching for any hidden meaning. Then, with a sudden laugh, he turned back to the railing, taking another swig from his bottle as he looked out over the students gathered below.
"You’re something else, Arthur," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Always poking around, trying to uncover secrets."
"Well, aren’t we all looking for ways to uncover what really happened to Louise?" Olive replied, her gaze locked on him. "Thinking about his death that night up here...cold blood on a cold rooftop. I can’t help but think his murderer is still out there, walking free."
"The police already ruled it a suicide," Henry said, swallowing hard. Beneath his composed exterior, she sensed a flicker of fear.
"And you believe that?" Olive asked, smirking. "You never got along with Louise because of the girls. Sure, he was a bully, the videos and all, but he didn’t deserve to die like that. Don’t you think it all feels... off?"
"You’re overthinking this, Arthur. Even Louise’s parents accepted it as suicide." Henry took another sip of his drink, his voice firm but his hands slightly unsteady. "Just drop it already. Why dig up something that’s been settled?"
"The fact his parents accepted it makes it even more suspicious or maybe they just didn’t want to drag the case any further. But I’m not dropping it," Olive said, her expression hardening with determination, which only seemed to frustrate Henry.
"You’re acting different. Can’t you just live without sticking your nose in everyone else’s business? This is getting annoying." His voice tightened with irritation. "If I’d known this was why you wanted me up here, I wouldn’t have come."
Olive’s instincts told her he was hiding something. She leaned in,lowering her voice to a near whisper as she wanted to see if she can get more useful information from Henry. "What do you mean, ’different’?"
Henry’s eyes snapped to hers, a warning gleaming within them. "Nothing, Arthur. Just drop it. I’m done with this kind of conversation."
The tension between them thickened, Olive knew it was time to back off.
"I should go," she said, forcing a yawn. "Exams are coming up, and I need to study."
Henry nodded, his expression still guarded. "Thanks for keeping me company, Arthur."
"Yeah!" Olive said and turned to leave, her steps steady. As soon as she was out of sight, she texted Mark: Henry’s suspicious as hell. Did you find anything in his room?
Nothing incriminating. Did you record your conversation with him, though? Mark replied.
Yeah, Olive confirmed as she descended the stairs.
Meet us in the 3RM special room now. Everyone’s here, he texted back.
Her heart raced as she reached the last step, the conversation with Henry replaying in her mind. She quickened her pace, scanning the surroundings for any signs of being watched. Finally, she spotted Mark waiting by the entrance of the 3RM special room, his eyes immediately locking onto hers.
"You really didn’t find anything?" Olive asked as she walked up to him.
Mark shook his head. "We did find out about a text sent to him. A text on his laptop which says: ’They’ll never find out.’"
Olive’s grip on her phone tightened. "That sounds... Suspicious."
Mark nodded. "It was dated the day before Louise died."
"Let’s get inside and talk," Olive said, glancing around to make sure they were alone. When she was certain no one was eavesdropping, she followed Mark into the 3RM special room.
Inside, Lucas, Lara, and Aiden were huddled around a laptop, the screen casting a pale glow over their serious faces. As Olive and Mark entered, Lucas rose from his chair and approached her, concern etched on his face.
"Are you okay?" he asked softly.
Olive offered him a reassuring smile. "I’m fine, Lucas."
"So, what did you find out?" Lara asked, her expression grave, drawing everyone’s focus to Olive. "With that note Henry left, it’s pretty clear he’s not the only one acting suspicious. I think we might be dealing with more than one person here."
"I think so too." Olive replied and heaved a frustrated sigh.
Mark’s eyes lit up. "You recorded your conversation with Henry, right? Let’s listen to it."
Olive nodded, passing him her phone, which he connected to the laptop. The room fell silent as Henry’s voice filled the air, each word tinged with the tension Olive had sensed on the rooftop. As they listened, the group’s faces grew darker, each of them clearly unsettled.
"He’s definitely hiding something," Lucas said quietly.
"Exactly," Olive agreed. "I was watching his expression the whole time. He’s holding something back."
Mark nodded. "And that note in his room...the timing is just too coincidental."
Lara’s gaze sharpened. "We’re going to need to dig deeper. We have to find out the truth."
Olive’s resolve hardened. "We will. Let’s start with Henry’s alibi for that night." She glanced at the screen, where the note was displayed, studying it closely. "It’s handwritten."
Everyone’s eyes followed her gaze to the note on the screen, dawning realization reflected in their expressions.
"That’s odd," Lucas murmured. "Why handwrite it before sending? Why not just type it and be done with it?"
Olive’s voice was firm. "Whatever the reason, it’s a lead. It’s like fate is on our side here, giving us clues. We need to focus on this note first. I have a strong feeling the person who wrote it is right here in this school."
"Yeah," Lara said, her voice filled with conviction. "That handwriting... We need to find out who it belongs to. Henry is definitely working with someone, someone close by."
Olive’s jaw tightened. "Once we identify this person, they’ll lead us to Henry. They won’t take the fall alone."
She glanced around the room, her eyes blazing with determination. "We’re getting closer to the truth. They won’t be able to hide for long."
