Chapter 122: An Act Of Forgiveness.
Chapter 122: An Act Of Forgiveness.
The next day arrived at Belmont with beautiful sunlight shining brightly over the students’ excited faces as they made their way to their classrooms after the morning assembly.
Olive and her classmates had settled down in the chemistry laboratory, waiting for Clara, who hadn’t arrived yet.
"Seriously? When is she going to get here? It’s been over thirty minutes!" Lucas complained, his expression irritated as he sat down beside Olive.
"She’ll be here soon. Probably caught up with something," Mark replied with a heavy sigh.
"So... how did your night go?" Olive whispered, raising her eyebrows curiously as she glanced at Mark and Lara, who were sitting together.
"How else? Just slept," Lara replied almost immediately, avoiding eye contact.
"You sure? No funny business?" Olive pressed further, her eyes narrowing as she gazed at both Mark and Lara, searching for any sign of a hidden truth.
"What funny business are you expecting?" Lucas chimed in with a scoff. "Your mind is dirty if you ask me."
"Just keep quiet. I wasn’t talking to you anyway, and besides, you’re the worst one here," Olive shot back, rolling her eyes at Lucas, who wisely decided to smile and stay silent. She turned her attention back to Mark and Lara. "So, are you sure? Nothing shady going on?"
"None. Now face front, or you might break your neck," Lara replied, swallowing hard and glancing away nervously. Olive stared at the couple for a moment before reluctantly turning back to the front of the class.
Racheal, on the other hand, sat alone, deeply lost in thought as she recalled all that had happened over the past few days. Even her friends hadn’t sat beside her, distancing themselves as if they wanted nothing to do with her. The other scholarship students dared not sit near a paid student like her either.
Suddenly, Henry stood up from his seat and walked over, sitting down beside Racheal, prompting her to raise a questioning eyebrow.
"What’s wrong?" she asked warily.
"What do you mean, ’what’s wrong’? I’m just sitting here," Henry replied casually.
"There’s another chair over there. You don’t need to sit here with me," Racheal said, her gaze fixed on him.
"I chose to sit here, so what?" Henry said with a shrug. But instead of replying, Racheal stood up, only to be pulled back down by Henry.
Olive and Lara exchanged incredulous glances. Though most of the other students didn’t know the full story between Henry and Racheal, Olive and Lara did and they never expected Henry to be anywhere near Racheal, let alone sit beside her.
"Is he stupid?" Lara muttered under her breath. "Can’t believe I actually fought because of this fool and got punished yesterday."
"What do you want from me?" Racheal asked, now visibly annoyed. "You won’t sit elsewhere, and now I’m trying to leave, but you won’t let me."
Henry leaned in, lowering his voice as he spoke with concern. "Your face, what happened? It looks like you’ve been crying. Your eyes are swollen. You can’t hide that."
Racheal blinked, caught off guard. "Huh?"
"If it’s about you confessing what you did and me getting upset, then forget about it. I’m not angry anymore."
Racheal’s eyebrow shot up. "What?"
"I understand why you did it," Henry continued softly. "You were frustrated, lonely. You had no friends to talk to, and it felt like you had to solve your problems on your own. So, you made a bad decision. But it’s okay. And I’m sorry about yesterday, sorry that Lara attacked you. I didn’t realize she’s a madwoman, you know," he joked, letting out an unexpected burst of laughter.
Racheal just stared at him, utterly baffled. He’s apologizing to me? He’s the one who I should be apologizing to! Is he a fool?
"Anyway," Henry said with a warm smile, "I’ll be sitting with you today and from now on. You might as well get used to it." He grinned at her, but Racheal simply scoffed.
He’s a fool after all, she thought to herself.
Just then, Clara rushed into the room. "Alright, students. Sorry I’m late, I had some pressing issues to deal with," she announced, setting her things down on the desk. "Now, open your textbooks to page 26, and let’s get started."
As the chemistry lesson drew to a close, Clara dismissed the class as it was finally break time, and the students began to rush out of the laboratory like waves crashing onto the shore, their laughter, chatter, and the slamming of lockers echoing through the school buildings.
Instead of leaving the classroom immediately, Olive, Lara, Mark, Lucas, and Henry stayed behind, an awkward silence hanging in the air as they exchanged uncertain glances.
"What’s wrong with you?" Lara finally asked, breaking the silence, her arms crossed in frustration as she glared at Henry.
"What do you mean, what’s wrong with me?" Henry replied, puzzled.
"What are you doing with that girl?" Lara pressed, her hands on her hips now, clearly agitated.
"What girl?" Henry asked, genuinely confused.
"Oh my goodness, are you daft or just pretending? I’m talking about Racheal! What the heck are you doing with her? How could you get up from here and sit with her? Are you under a spell or something?" Lara’s voice rose with frustration.
Lucas and Mark exchanged glances, visibly lost. They didn’t know the full story.
"What’s going on?" Lucas asked, raising an eyebrow.
Olive sighed and explained the truth behind the whole incident, leaving Lucas and Mark in stunned silence.
"What the heck?" Lucas exclaimed, looking horrified. "How could we cover for her when she did something like that? I’ve been fighting with my conscience this whole time, and now I find out the truth?"
"She’s not evil," Henry cut in, surprising them. "She did what she did because she felt lonely. She made a bad decision, but she realized her mistake and saved me. I want us all to put this behind us. The case is over."
The group stared at Henry, their mouths hanging open in disbelief as he walked out of the room.
"Did he hit his head or something?" Mark muttered, shaking his head. "His brain’s not working right."
"There’s more to this than we know," Olive added, shaking her head. "He’s going to get hurt. Racheal doesn’t have a heart like his. She’ll ruin him if he’s not careful."
Mark nodded, a look of concern crossing his face. "She’ll tear him apart."
