Chapter 116: Love, Revenge and Murder.
With that, he walked into the classroom, leaving Anabella as well as the students standing frozen in shock.
The school hallway, as well as the classroom, fell silent as Lucas’s words hung in the air, leaving everyone stunned. Olive’s eyes widened in shock. She couldn’t believe what she had just heard. Lucas had just told everyone he was in love with someone else, and she couldn’t help but wonder if that someone was her.
Mark, who had been standing beside Lara, turned to Lara with a puzzled glance. He raised an eyebrow, as if to say, ’Did you hear that?’ Lara, on the other hand, looked like she was about to faint. Her eyes were fixed on Lucas, her mouth agape.
Anabella, still standing outside the classroom, looked as though she had been punched in the gut. Her face turned pale, her eyes wide with shock. Aiden, who had been standing beside her, looked equally stunned.
Olive, fearing that Lucas might come out of the classroom and even go as far as mentioning her name as the person he loved, grabbed Lara’s hand. Together, they pushed their way through the crowd of students until they reached the school rooftop. Once there, Olive finally stopped, trying to catch her breath.
"Is the person Lucas loves you?" Lara asked, raising an eyebrow. Curiosity burned in her eyes. "There’s no doubt it’s you."
Olive let out a frustrated sigh. "He kissed me last night, and now this—this revelation about loving someone else in front of everyone." She threw her hands up in exasperation. "I don’t know why he’s always like this. Kissing me, especially after breaking up with Anabella. He has ignored me for so long—ever since we came back from the George vacation house last term. He didn’t even acknowledge me this term until he caught Anabella cheating. Now, he’s suddenly trying to crawl back."
"Kissed you? Oh wow, that’s amazing!" Lara exclaimed, her cheeks flushing a deep pink. "I told you he might have only been dating Anabella because of you. Maybe he was trying to hurt you, to make you jealous so you’d run into his arms. But you didn’t believe me. Now, it’s obvious—the person he loves is definitely you."
"I know it’s me, but don’t you see the problem?" Olive’s frustration deepened. "If he confesses to loving me, everyone will think he’s gay! And as for me... I might lose my scholarship for deceiving the school management. If he tells everyone I’m the one he loves, it’s nothing but stupidity."
"Calm down," Lara said soothingly, placing a hand on Olive’s shoulder. "He hasn’t said anything specific yet. He just admitted to loving someone, but he didn’t mention you. He didn’t even hint in your direction. Don’t let Lucas frustrate you. Besides, if you’re really worried that he’s ready to come out to everyone about his feelings for you, you need to talk to him. Let him know you can’t risk your scholarship over this."
"And you think that’ll stop him?" Olive asked, incredulous. She rubbed her temples in frustration. "Last night, he told me, ’I’m taking what’s mine, Olive, and you’re what I want.’"
Lara gasped dramatically, her blush deepening. "Ouuu, such a line! You’re what he wants, and Anabella just got in the way. He used her to make you jealous, but it didn’t work because you didn’t react. Now, he’s taking matters into his own hands. He wants to win your heart for real this time. And with a line like that, girl, he’s going to do absolutely anything to make you his."
"I’m not some object, Lara. I’m not going to let him ruin me with his actions. Fine, I know he loves me, and I—I love him too, but we just can’t be together. Our social backgrounds are too different. He’s from a wealthy family, the heir to Belmont High School, while I depend on my scholarship to stay in school and get to college. If I lose my scholarship, there’s no money for me to go to another school, let alone college. I love Lucas, but I can’t risk everything for him. That’s why I’ve been trying to push him away. I want him to hate me and forget about me as soon as possible."
Lara sighed in frustration, placing her hands on her forehead as if to massage away the tension. "I understand, Olive. It’s just—no matter how hard you try to push him away, he’s still madly in love with you. He’s hurt, and so are you. You’re both hurting, but fate just doesn’t want you two together. I get it." She walked closer to Olive and wrapped her arms around her in a comforting hug. "But it’s still sad to see you both suffering like this."
________
Racheal and Henry sat down together in the school garden, both still shaken from the events of the night before. As they watched the other students enjoy their break, the weight of the recent tragedy hung heavily between them.
"Why are you still coming to me?" Racheal asked, her voice dripping with sadness. "We shouldn’t be seen together—not after my boyfriend just died. The investigation is still ongoing."
"Why shouldn’t we be seen together?" Henry snapped, his tone sharp. "Yes, your boyfriend just died, but that doesn’t mean I can’t sit with you. And are you really this sad over that motherfucker? You should forget about him and move on."
"What?" Racheal’s eyes widened in disbelief. "How can you say that? Why should I forget about him? I—I killed him with my own hands, Henry! Just because I wanted to hurt him, just like he hurt me by cheating and hitting me."
Her voice broke as she continued. "He caught me with a scholarship student... I did it on purpose. I wanted to see his reaction. I hid his car key in the drawer, knowing he’d come back—but I didn’t expect him to return so soon. I wanted him to see us screwing each other on the bed. I had hoped he’d kill you out of rage. Then I could use the evidence of your death to control him."
Henry’s face turned red with anger as her words sank in. "Wait, what? You wanted him to kill me? So you could blackmail him with my death?" His fists clenched in fury. "So why did you end up killing him instead?"
Racheal’s tears flowed freely now. "I couldn’t go through with it. When I saw him hurting you, something in me snapped. I didn’t mean to kill him, Henry! Who would have thought a single flower vase could end a life? And after it happened, it was over. You had already texted everyone, and I knew there was no turning back."
Henry stared at her, his face pale with shock. "Damn, Racheal. You’re crazy. You would’ve let me die, just to get revenge on Michael?"
"I’m sorry, Henry," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I didn’t want to hurt you. I was just so angry, so hurt."
"Sorry?" Henry exploded. "Do you think I care about your apologies now? If I had known what kind of person you really are, I never would’ve gotten involved. I wouldn’t have dragged our friends into this mess, and I wouldn’t have lied to the police to protect you. You’re despicable!" With that, he stormed away, leaving Racheal alone in the garden, sobbing.
A slow clap echoed behind her, causing Racheal to whirl around. Jessica stepped out from the shadows, a smug smile on her face.
"Well, well, well. Nice one, Racheal. Quite the master planner, aren’t you?"
Racheal’s heart sank. "W-What? How long have you been standing there?"
"Long enough," Jessica said, smirking as she sat down beside Racheal. "I heard everything. So, was it love for Henry that stopped you from letting Michael kill him? How interesting."
"Please, Jessica, I’m not in the mood for this," Racheal muttered, standing up to leave. But Jessica quickly grabbed her arm.
"I wouldn’t walk away if I were you. Not unless you want me to go straight to the police and spill the whole truth," Jessica threatened, her smirk widening.
"Oh really?" Racheal’s voice hardened as she glared at Jessica. "Go ahead. But you’d be arrested too. After all, you deal in drugs, don’t you?"
Jessica’s laughter rang out. "Oh, sweetie, there’s a big difference between a drug dealer and a murderer. Do you really think the punishment for selling drugs is the same as taking someone’s life? My mom’s gone to prison before—she’d gladly go again in my place. But you... you don’t have anyone, do you? I hear you’ve been disowned."
"What do you want from me?" Racheal demanded, her body tense with anger. "I have no money to give you. You know that."
Jessica laughed again. "I don’t want your money, Racheal. But when the time comes, I’ll tell you what I do want. And trust me, it’s something you’ll want too." She gave Racheal one last smirk before walking away, leaving her alone and terrified.
