Chapter 95 Dr. Gao is Not Happy
During the afternoon, Jiang An and Ren Lin were arranged by Dr. Li to familiarize themselves with the ward’s operations. Each of them was assigned a patient. Jiang An was responsible for an elderly woman over seventy who had just been admitted a few days ago. The tumor in her stomach was not yet determined to be malignant or benign.
She would then need to follow up on the elderly woman’s condition.
After making rounds in the ward, Jiang An and Dr. Li went to the office together. The office space in the department was somewhat cramped, and she and Ren Lin were assigned to two other desks in Dr. Li’s office, which would serve as their workstations from then on.
Jiang An and Ren Lin each took a corner of the office, and the girl began to look over some medical records she had just received under Dr. Li’s guidance.
Before they knew it, the sun had set, and Dr. Li, who had been busy with them, stretched and began to pack up his desk, calling out to them, "Comrades, time to get off work!"
Jiang An slid open her phone and checked the time; it was already past six o’clock. Thinking about her arrangement with Dr. Gao that morning, she put the unfinished medical records in her bag, watching as Dr. Li, with his bag on, walked out cheerfully and turned to wave at them: "Disciples, see you tomorrow."
Jiang An couldn’t help but smile, thinking to herself that Dr. Li was indeed an interesting person.
As she finished packing and was about to leave, Ren Lin also came out; the two walked towards the elevator together.
Although Ren Lin was not talkative, he would still start conversations when with Jiang An. The young man slightly lifted the corners of his mouth and began talking to Jiang An about Dr. Li, and she politely responded, "Yeah, Dr. Li is quite cute."
"Right, Lin Shu and the others were just saying they got stuck with duty tonight." Ren Lin continued.
It took Jiang An a while to remember that Lin Shu was another intern. She frowned slightly, "We will definitely be scheduled for duty eventually as well."
It was relatively relaxed at the beginning, but life in the hospital from now on was uncertain.
The two walked into the elevator together, with Ren Lin, who was taller than her, trailing behind Jiang An. As she reached out to press the floor number, the elevator suddenly opened again, and the next second, Gao Chuan appeared in front of them. His expression flashed a moment of surprise upon seeing the two in the elevator, then he stepped inside.
Jiang An raised her head and saw Dr. Gao, her smile stiffening, yet she remained standing still.
Ren Lin recognized Gao Chuan and greeted him respectfully, "Hello, Dr. Gao."
The man walked in and stood on the other side of the elevator, next to Jiang An. After a slight nod in response to Ren Lin’s voice from behind, he turned his gaze towards Jiang An just in time to hear her also greet in a feeble voice, "Hello, Dr. Gao."
The young lady was acting her part, quite convincingly indeed.
Gao Chuan’s lips curled into an almost imperceptible smile. He intended to step forward and press the elevator button but happened to move in sync with Jiang An, their arms unexpectedly bumping into each other. Jiang An reflexively took a step back, her eyes nervously darting to the side.
Gao Chuan raised an eyebrow nonchalantly, eyes lowered, and pressed the button for the "-1" floor.
The cramped space suddenly contained only the three of them. Jiang An tensed, her eyes blankly fixed on the elevator doors ahead, while Gao Chuan, in his black suit, stood beside her, also looking straight ahead.
The air was so quiet it was suffocating, and Jiang An subtly gripped the hem of her clothes.
After a few seconds, Ren Lin’s voice came from behind, addressing Jiang An, "Hey Jiang An, are you free tomorrow evening? There’s talk of a dinner gathering in the group."
Already quite nervous, Jiang An turned slightly at the sound, revealing a puzzled expression, "What dinner?"
Ren Lin, standing behind the two, looked at his phone and replied, "Lin Shu suggested the four of us get together sometime, the place is already picked, just waiting to see when you’re free."
Jiang An belatedly dug out her phone from her bag to find that at some point, they had added her to a four-person group chat, where the other three were discussing dinner plans. Her gaze fixed on the screen, and as she pondered over the dinner, she inexplicably lifted her eyes to glance at Gao Chuan standing beside her, suited and booted. The man seemed to notice her gaze and slightly turned his face, his gentle eyes landing upon Jiang An.
His gaze from above was ambiguous, difficult to discern clarity from obscurity.
The girl panicked all at once, her lips parting: "I’m OK for tomorrow."
Gao Chuan, standing still, listened to their conversation with a deeper look in his eyes, appearing somewhat absent-minded.
"Then let’s do tomorrow evening. After work, we’ll head there together." Ren Lin replied in the group chat, and the four of them finally confirmed the final location and time.
The elevator "dinged" as it reached the first floor. Jiang An looked up and glanced at Dr. Gao beside her. The man was still expressionlessly staring ahead as she and Ren Lin exited the elevator one after another.
As the elevator doors closed again, the man watched the pair leave together, a shadow crossing his face.
Jiang An and Ren Lin parted ways at the hospital entrance. The girl turned her head and walked toward a pedestrian street nearby the hospital. After crossing a road, she noticed a familiar figure under a plane tree.
The girl quickened her pace and ran over, huffing and puffing as she stopped beside Gao Chuan, "Dr. Gao, sorry, I’m here."
Gao Chuan turned to face the breathless Jiang An, his eyes softening, "Do you want to have dinner around here before heading back?"
Jiang An lifted her head, the street view of winter was bitter yet tender. The sky was somewhat overcast, and the trees along the street had shed all their leaves, leaving stark branches still clinging to snow from a few days ago, yet to melt. Gao Chuan, dressed in a black suit, stood amidst this scenery, undeniably captivating.
Gao Chuan led her to the Wonton Shop he frequently visited; the building was an utterly ordinary storefront, even somewhat rudimentary, imbued with an air of local life.
It seemed unexpected that Dr. Gao, a man of his stature, would dine in such a place. The girl was taken aback for a moment, but the man confidently took her inside. There weren’t many customers inside, and they found a corner to sit down.
Soon, a middle-aged woman with an apron emerged from the kitchen and upon seeing Gao Chuan showed a surprised delight, "Xiao Gao, it’s been so long since I’ve seen you come to eat."
Gao Chuan sat across from Jiang An, smiling as he explained, "It’s been a bit busy at the hospital recently."
The woman’s gaze shifted to Jiang An, "Ah, is this your girlfriend? She’s really beautiful!" the Boss Lady remarked with a smile.
Jiang An instinctively wanted to shake her head in denial, but then the deep voice of the man sitting opposite her reached her ears: "My wife."
Hearing the man say this, Jiang An felt a jolt in her heart and could only follow along with a smile, seeing the Boss Lady’s mouth agape in what seemed to be disbelief, she pressed, "What! When did you get married and not even tell Auntie?"
"Two months ago." Gao Chuan looked at the blushing Jiang An across from him, answering truthfully.
After the pleasantries were done, Gao Chuan ordered two portions of seafood wontons, with the Boss Lady’s gaze fixed on Jiang An throughout. The girl sat up straight, smiling shyly.
Only after the woman finally left did Jiang An breathe a sigh of relief and tentatively asked, "Are you very familiar with the Boss Lady, Dr. Gao?"
So familiar that their marital relationship could be revealed?
The man’s gaze faltered, then he explained to Jiang An, "She was a patient I treated before,"
"Don’t worry, no one from the hospital will come here for a meal, it won’t be exposed."
Jiang An, realizing Gao Chuan had seen through her concerns, felt her blush deepen as her eyes evasively landed on the chopstick container on the table, sensing a newfound aloofness in Dr. Gao’s gaze.
