Chapter 92: Chapter 91 The First Date

Chapter 91 First Date

As December drew to a close, a gentle snowfall quietly heralded the arrival of the New Year, drifting down like fluff, blanketing the world.

Jiang An slept until the afternoon, and it was only when she turned over and pulled open the curtains that she noticed the light snow falling outside, the sky grey and the whole city enveloped in snow, dreamy as a castle from a childhood dream.

She slowly opened her bleary eyes, the white light merging into her sparkling eyes, reached under her pillow for her phone, and unlocked the screen to first see a memo she had made late last night.

She glanced over the date plans she had written, a slight, soft smile seeping through her eyes.

Displayed prominently on the phone’s charm was "Anan and Dr. Gao’s First Date."

Below it was a list of things she wanted to do today.

1. Watch a movie with Dr. Gao

2. Share a straw with Dr. Gao to drink soda and eat from the same bucket of popcorn

3. Watch a fireworks display with Dr. Gao

4. Countdown to the New Year with Dr. Gao

5. Kiss Dr. Gao amid a sea of people

Looking over each carefully-thought-out plan, the girl couldn’t help but blush nervously, opening Meituan to check the cinema ticket information she booked yesterday, verifying the showtime several times before she could relax.

She had booked a screening for just after nine o’clock in the evening, figuring it would end just in time to catch the firework display Xia Zi mentioned and countdown to the New Year with Dr. Gao, her mind filling with images of their date, grinning uncontrollably.

Since Dr. Gao might have the day off tomorrow, his duties in the hospital might be heavier today, so they agreed to meet directly in front of the cinema.

Around seven-thirty, Jiang An began rummaging through her wardrobe for clothes to wear on the date, usually only concerned with warmth, she, for the first time in subzero weather, considered wearing a skirt and finally chose a light purple one bought during a shopping trip with Ji Wanwan, originally discarded to the bottom of her trunk because it was out of season, and she found a pair of light-colored pumps, changing into the skirt and turning in front of the mirror several times, satisfied with a beaming smile.

Following Xia Zi’s advice, she hurriedly put on some subtle makeup and spritzed some perfume, finally ready. Looking at herself in the mirror, her black, lush hair cascaded over her shoulders, her fair cheeks showing a hint of soft pink, like endless rosy clouds on the horizon, and her big watery eyes shimmered.

According to their agreed time, Jiang An took a taxi and sent Gao Chuan a WeChat message on her way out.

By then, the sky had darkened, neon lights twinkled on the highway, and Jiang An watched the retreating night view outside the window, her heart fluttering with excitement.

If Xia Zi knew that she had almost stayed up all night because of this date, she’d surely point at her head and call her foolish, the girl thought, a flowery smile lighting her face.

Meanwhile, in the hospital, a man’s phone vibrated on the office desk, a WeChat message popped up on the screen, and soon after, the screen dimmed again.

Jiang An: Dr. Gao, I’m on my way!

By eight-thirty, Jiang An had arrived at the cinema. Since it was a New Year’s Eve screening, the crowd was larger than usual, she collected her ticket from the machine and sat down in the waiting area.

She bought a ticket for the 9:20 show, a comedy film with decent reviews.

The cinema is some distance away from City Hospital. Having estimated that Gao Chuan would only be able to make it by 9 o’clock, Jiang An sat idly on the chair scrolling through Weibo, as couples passed by her with popcorn and coke, a bright smile curling on her lips as she watched them.

Time ticked by, people came and went around her in waves. Jiang An placed the popcorn and coke she had bought on the table beside her, her gaze constantly shifting towards the entrance, and a glance at her phone showed it was nearly 9 o’clock, but Dr. Gao was still nowhere to be seen.

The girl couldn’t help but become nervous, muttering to herself: "He must be stuck in traffic, he’ll probably arrive soon."

However, as the movie started to admit tickets, the man’s figure still hadn’t appeared. Jiang An clenched the two movie tickets in her hand tightly, the light dimming in her eyes, a look of confusion written all over her face.

Opening her conversation with Gao Chuan, there was still not a single message.

As time continued to pass, with only two minutes left before the movie started, the girl stood up from her seat and walked to the entrance of the cinema, scanning the ever-moving crowd for that familiar figure.

Regrettably, Gao Chuan never showed up. Jiang An, still sitting alone, constantly made excuses for Dr. Gao in her heart, thinking perhaps work at the hospital was holding him up or maybe traffic delayed him, her heart sinking continuously.

The movie lasted two hours, and half an hour had already passed by, yet Jiang An still sat there waiting.

He will come, she thought.

Until the movie ended, and the bustling crowd walked out of the cinema, laughing and discussing the scenes and plot of the movie, the girl hadn’t even realized she had been waiting there for over three hours.

A layer of desolation washed over her, an indescribable pain arose, and in silence, she threw the two almost completely crumpled movie tickets into the trash bin.

The temperature was frighteningly low on this winter night. As Jiang An stepped outside, she wrapped her coat tighter around herself; indeed, many people had gathered in the square, probably waiting to celebrate the New Year together. Recalling the plans written on her phone brought a chill to her nose, and a sour sensation penetrated her eyes.

At this moment, Gao Chuan, after six hours of intense surgery at the operating table, had successfully removed a kidney tumor from a patient. As he cleaned up in the washroom nearing midnight, a nurse came by to collect his surgical robe, expressing admiration knowing how challenging the surgery was: "Dr. Gao, that was tough, Happy New Year."

Gao Chuan nodded and responded with a "Happy New Year."

This surgery perfectly capped off his year.

Having stood in a high-pressure environment for over five hours, he was now utterly drained and aching all over. Returning to his office, he checked his phone and was shocked to see the time, having completely forgotten about the movie date he had with Jiang An amidst the surgery.

Opening WeChat, he finally saw the messages Jiang An had sent.

At 8 o’clock, Jiang An: "Dr. Gao, I’m on my way"

At 9 o’clock, Jiang An: "Is it traffic delays?"

The man brought a hand to his forehead, the light fading from his eyes, looking at the time which now was almost midnight, a wave of regret flooded his mind.

He had anticipated the surgery would take just two hours, but unexpected complications prolonged it till now. He wondered how long Jiang An had waited for him and if she had already left the cinema.

With a furrowed brow, he flipped open his contacts and dialed Jiang An’s number.
