Chapter 90: Want to Date Dr. Gao

In the blink of an eye, New Year’s Day was approaching, and the entire city was already decked out in lights and decorations in preparation for the new year. Unlike Jiang An, Xia Zi had already been interning at her hospital for about a week and finally caught up with Jiang An over the weekend.

The two strolled around a shopping mall together, with Xia Zi complaining to Jiang An about a pile of frustrating issues she encountered during her internship at the hospital. These were essentially common problems faced by someone new to the job. Jiang An kept comforting her, but inside he couldn’t help but take a deep breath about his upcoming internship.

After all, he didn’t know what kind of department and mentor he would be paired with, but the thought of working with Dr. Gao every day was more exciting than worrisome.

Xia Zi had a pained expression typical of a hard-working employee on her face, complaining to Jiang An, "You have no idea how demanding the head of our department is; it’s all about writing reviews and reports, my hand is about to break off."

During school, everyone looked forward to clinical internships, but once actually on the job, they started to miss the days in school.

"I really want to go back to attending classes now. I feel like Mr. Hu knows so much more than the doctor who supervises my training." The two found a bench outside the mall to sit down, with Xia Zi leaning on Jiang An, speaking listlessly.

"Luckily, I’m not on shift this New Year’s Day, or else my boyfriend would be mad again." Xia Zi said as she kicked stones with her feet. Jiang An had already heard from Xia Zi over the phone that she had little time to spend with her boyfriend after working regular hours at the hospital for a week.

Xia Zi and her boyfriend had been together for five years and their parents were already urging them to get married. Xia Zi had promised her boyfriend that they would visit their parents together during New Year’s Day. Thinking about the pile of annoying things regarding work and family, Xia Zi furrowed her brows, suddenly turning the conversation toward Jiang An, "Enough about me, how are things going with your deity?"

The girl who had been quietly listening on the side heard Xia Zi asking about her, she shifted her gaze to their joined hands and replied calmly, "Not bad."

Xia Zi pursed her lips, "What do you mean ’not bad’? I’m asking you, how does it feel to be in a marriage-first-love-later situation?"

"What are your plans for New Year’s Day?" Xia Zi continued to ask.

Jiang An couldn’t help but laugh at her wording, thinking about the days since their relationship was confirmed, which didn’t seem to have changed much from before. After Shen Mei left, she had taken the initiative to sleep back in the guest room, and by the time she got up each morning, he had already left for work, only to return in the evening. Their relationship seemed to be just as distant as before.

Not at all like a romantic relationship, Xia Zi summarized for her.

"What should love be like then?" Jiang An, inexperienced in this area, had to seek advice from the love guru in front of her.

Slapping her forehead, Xia Zi almost forgot that although Jiang An was now a married woman, she was actually still a novice in love. Now Xia Zi couldn’t help but worry too, adopting a teacher’s posture, she began to devise strategies for Jiang An, "Love, you know, requires attention to big and small things. I think the lack of progress between you two might be because you’ve never gone out on a date,"

Jiang An listened with a look of eagerness to hear more, as Xia Zi thoughtfully continued.

"When you’re in love, you need to go out together. Watch movies, travel, or even just walk together. With some interaction in between, the relationship will naturally progress." Xia Zi, drawing from her own rich experience, spoke word by word, and then turned to Jiang An with a suggestion, "I say, you should date Dr. Gao on New Year’s Day. If you’re busy with work, go see a movie in the evening, and then you can ring in the New Year together. Time Square will have a fireworks display, as always, and it’ll be packed with people. Just hold his hand tightly, and then kiss him."

""

Xia Zi already showed an auntie’s smile while speaking, thinking to herself that she had already cued up the process for this silly girl, and it should surely come to fruition. But Jiang An, sitting to the side, appeared pensive, "I need to go back and ask Dr. Gao if he’s free on New Year’s Eve."

Xia Zi rolled her eyes. She had never seen a couple that found it so difficult to make a date. But considering that Gao Chuan did not seem like the type to take initiative, it was up to Jiang An to make the move.

"You can do it, and if you succeed, treat me to a meal."

Jiang An chuckled "giggle giggle" and agreed. These freshly started interns were arguably the poorest people on the planet. According to Xia Zi, their monthly salary was so meager it wouldn’t even cover her spending for a single splurge.

In the afternoon, the two went for beauty treatments together. Xia Zi was busy preparing for the meeting with parents the next day, so they parted ways early. With nothing else to do, Jiang An had no choice but to take a taxi home.

On her way home, she pondered the suggestion Xia Zi had made earlier. Tomorrow would be New Year’s Eve, and she wondered if Dr. Gao would be available.

When Jiang An got home, as usual, Gao Chuan had not returned. She began to consider what delicious food to make for the evening. After much hesitation, she finally decided to cook a vegetable porridge along with a few simple homemade dishes. No sooner said than done, the girl put down her phone and dived into the kitchen.

Jiang An had never been the kind of girl who kept her hands clean; she was brought up alone by her mother, a teacher who was very busy. Many things she had to do by herself since she was young. While other girls were crying when their parents failed to pick them up on time, she was already traveling to and from school by herself.

The same went for cooking. Her mother was a typical Southern woman, who had taught her how to cook Jiangnan dishes from a young age.

Lately, Gao Chuan had taken on two patients with complex conditions and was swamped with work. He had just finished a tumor removal surgery that afternoon and was utterly exhausted. He took off his surgical gown and found that it was half an hour past the end of his shift upon returning to his office. He furrowed his brows, changed his clothes, and left the hospital.

When he arrived home, he found Jiang An already seated at the dining table waiting for him. As he stepped into the kitchen, the aromatic scent greeted him. The girl must have slipped over at some point and, seeing him, beamed with joy, "You’re back! Wash your hands and let’s eat!"

Gao Chuan paused in the middle of taking off his coat, replied with a "Sure."

He couldn’t pinpoint when it started, but the man who once focused solely on work, sometimes not returning home because of it, now found himself instinctively wanting to go home, to see the person waiting for him there.

"Dr. Gao, are you free tomorrow night?" Sitting across the dining table, Jiang An looked at the man as he took his seat, served him a bowl of porridge, and tentatively asked.

The man’s handsome eyebrows lifted slightly as he thought about his schedule for the next day. He didn’t have to be on call this New Year’s Day, so he should be free in the evening.

"Yes, I am. What’s up?" He spoke with thin lips slightly parted, his deep voice reaching Jiang An’s ears.

The corners of the girl’s lips rose into a tentative smile, stammering, "Would you like... to go watch a movie together?"

Hearing the girl’s inviting tone, Gao Chuan’s beautiful eyes slightly crinkled, and he replied with a "Sure."
