Chapter 83: Chapter 82 Two People Who Say One Thing and Mean Another
Two people are together in the cramped space of the restroom, with Jiang An still maintaining her original posture with her back to Gao Chuan. Gao Chuan stares at the girl’s slender back, not knowing how to start speaking.
He knows that what Shen Mei said today really put Jiang An in a difficult position. If he wasn’t there, he wouldn’t know how Jiang An would have submissively bent over backwards.
It’s not hard to see that in front of him and his family, Jiang An has always been modestly demeaning herself. She probably thinks only by being submissive to them can she satisfy everyone.
But the one who always ends up feeling aggrieved is her...
As Gao Chuan thinks about this, a pang of pain stabs at his heart. He’s accustomed to seeing Jiang An’s ostrich-like humbleness; she always likes to avoid issues, preferring to keep her head down low to deal with problems.
"Jiang An..." The man behind her chokes up at calling out the girl’s name, moving forward a step and his tall figure envelops the little girl in the corner.
He’s always been so tall, in front of her.
Jiang An stands there stunned, her flustered gaze resting on the faucet in front of her, still gushing water which is about to overflow from the sink, yet she freezes, suddenly unsure of what to do.
What’s meant to come will come, she knows in her heart.
Before the man can say another word, Jiang An suddenly feels him lean closer, and once again the distance between them narrows. Her back is already against the man’s warm chest, pupils dilating in an instant, her tear-stained face blushing.
The next second, the man reaches from behind to turn off the faucet, and the whole restroom becomes instantly quiet. What followed clearly into her ears are the sounds of Jiang An’s panting.
They were because of her recent crying.
Gao Chuan lowers his head to stare at the back of the girl’s head, guessing that Little Ostrich must now look like a tear-stained kitten, wanting to speak but the words catch in his throat.
He was never good at comforting others since he was young.
"Jiang An, you don’t need to take Ms. Shen’s words to heart..." Gao Chuan barely manages to say before suddenly being interrupted by the girl in front of him. Jiang An braces her hands against the sink, too nervous to turn back and see the man’s expression at the moment.
She summons all her strength trying to regulate her disordered breathing and stretches out her hand to wipe all the teardrops from her face, stubbornly saying, "Dr. Gao, you don’t have to say it, I know, don’t worry, it didn’t bother me," Jiang An says each word, yet breaks her defenses once more. She doesn’t understand what happened to her today, why she keeps crying uncontrollably.
She clearly hates crying the most.
"We’re just in a contracted marriage, bound to divorce sooner or later, I understand all that," Jiang An says, each word punctuated, yet her heart suddenly feels like it’s being torn apart.
Listening to her intermittent voice, something heavy pauses in Gao Chuan’s mind.
After a long while, a cold smirk hooks at the corner of his mouth. So, she still remembers what he said. So, is this what she’s always been thinking?
"I’ll try to avoid the topic of children from now on." Jiang An tries her best to restrain her tears that she can no longer control, struggling to calm her emotions but feeling increasingly powerless. It turns out these words had to be said through tears after all.
For Jiang An, it’s better for her to speak these words than for the man to stress them himself; at least this way she can save some of her dignity.
The person in front of her is currently setting clear boundaries with herself, in Gao Chuan’s view.
So for the past two months, she has considered herself in this way, Gao Chuan mused, mocking herself for truly being insane to fantasize about a future for the two of them.
But in reality, they will not have a future.
He almost forgot. Ridiculous.
The air in the restroom was eerily quiet, Jiang An tried hard to hold her breath, her face flushed red with her back to Gao Chuan, she must not cry anymore, it would really be too pathetic.
The man, with indifference filling his eyes, stepped back and in a cold, expressionless voice, said, "Good that you understand." Then he turned, unlocked the door, and left the restroom.
One sentence, and all hope was lost.
It wasn’t until the sounds behind her completely ceased that Jiang An finally exhaled, panting from the effort, with hot tears streaming down her red cheeks and gradually reaching her neck, bringing a slight chill.
It’s better to wake up from this self-induced dream sooner, she silently told herself.
After who knows how long, Jiang An finally composed herself and left the restroom, to see only Aunt Liu cleaning up the dishes on the table. Seeing Jiang An approaching, Aunt Liu wore a look of concern: "Second Young Madam, there’s still some food left in the kitchen specially for you, should I get some for you?"
Jiang An quickly refused: "No need."
Not knowing when, grandmother came up behind her. The old lady, who usually takes a nap after lunch, had waited specifically for her. Without waiting for Jiang An’s explanation, she pulled Jiang An to sit down on the sofa, her heart aching at the sight of the young girl’s reddened eyes from crying.
"Silly child, your mother just has a sharp tongue but a soft heart. She’s just anxious about not having a grandson, you mustn’t take it to heart with her." The grandmother’s rough fingers gently caressed the girl’s delicate skin, and Jiang An nodded repeatedly. She had lived with her mother since she was young, unlike other children who were cherished by the older generation. Now that grandmother comforted her like this, Jiang An was especially moved.
"I know, I haven’t done well enough." Jiang An said with her head down, self-reproach in her tone. The old lady frowned upon hearing her voice laced with bitterness, anyone who’d visit their deceased mother and then encounter such vexations would end up crying.
Grandmother immediately interrupted: "Silly child, you’ve done well enough. It’s Gao Chuan’s fortune to marry such a great girl like you, grandmother can’t even begin to express how fond she is of you!" As she spoke, she hugged the girl into her arms, and Jiang An felt a warmth surge in her heart, finally feeling not so terrible.
"Grandma, I don’t have much to do for the next half a month, let me stay and keep you company!" Jiang An slowly moved out of the embrace, pleading softly after lifting her head slightly.
Indeed, before starting her new job, she did have half a month off. Instead of staying at home, it would be better to spend more time with the elderly.
But on a deeper level, she wanted to avoid contact with Dr. Gao as much as possible.
After all, they had just had a frank conversation, and the question that had troubled her for a long time finally seemed to have an answer.
It seemed like the outcome was foreordained long ago, but why does it still hurt so much after being firmly confirmed now!
The elderly lady was overjoyed at Jiang An’s offer to stay and keep her company, and immediately directed Aunt Liu to prepare a room for Jiang An, guessing that the girl must be tired today. The grandmother then told her to go get some sleep first.
Jiang An lay on the soft bed, staring blankly for a while before she finally closed her eyes.
She had a long dream, where her mother and father were still around, and she was a carefree young girl again, able to play by the seaside every day. The waves raised by the wind brushed over her little feet, while the sunset glow sprinkled over the blue sea, shimmering with light.
At that time, everything seemed to bring joy.
