Chapter 81 Dr. Gao Doesn’t Want Children
It took the two people roughly an hour to reach Grandma’s house. Gao Chuan had told the family early in the morning that he would accompany Jiang An to visit Fang Qing, and Grandma, considering the young lady’s feelings, had her sit down and eat as soon as she arrived.
With her eyes still red from crying all morning, Jiang An sat next to Grandma and felt her nose tingle when the old lady touched the back of her hand. She wondered what she had done to deserve such generous treatment from everyone in the Gao Family.
Gao Lin, sensing Jiang An’s low mood and not wanting to bring up the subject of Fang Qing for fear of reviving the girl’s sorrows, carried a bowl of rice with his usual stern expression. He asked about Jiang An’s internship and, upon hearing that she had been accepted by City Hospital, broke into a smile, praising her repeatedly, "Good, good, good."
Jiang An was not a mere decorative vase—that was something Gao Chuan had determined the first moment he met her.
Hearing about the half-year internship, Shen Mei pondered for a moment, her brows knitting slightly. She continued to place meat into Jiang An’s bowl and asked, "Anan, when do you plan to start having children?"
As soon as these words were spoken, the atmosphere at the table cooled. Even without Shen Mei explicitly saying it, Jiang An could understand her anxiety. Both Gao Chuan and Gao Yu, as successors of the Gao Family, were already in their thirties and neither daughter-in-law showed any sign of pregnancy, which was understandably worrisome for Shen Mei.
But in her heart, Jiang An knew full well that she and Dr. Gao were simply not going to have children.
Seeing the girl biting her chopsticks in silence, Shen Mei tried again, "How about waiting until your internship ends? It’s okay Anan, you don’t have to work. Gao Chuan can support you," she said, in a tone that seemed casual but carried a pressuring undertone.
Gao Lin was about to speak when he gave a look towards Shen Mei, which she ignored. Shen Mei wasn’t the type to easily back down; she continued to earnestly persuade the couple, "I say you both should take advantage of your youth and have children soon. I can take care of them for you, and your work can be picked up again later."
Jiang An didn’t know how to respond to Shen Mei’s insinuating comments and could only muster a restrained smile. Gao Chuan, on the other side, frowning upon hearing Ms. Shen’s unpleasant remarks, set down his bowl and chopsticks, and said firmly, "Mom, we don’t want children right now."
He had been wanting to say this for a while but had been too lazy to confront Shen Mei. Now, seeing Shen Mei pressing Jiang An with this issue again, he had to step in.
Shen Mei, thinking he was siding with Jiang An, still didn’t give in, "Then when do you want to have them? You’re both in your thirties now, and you’re aware of the family situation. It’s not the time to be irresponsible. Anan, we young people are afraid of being burdened by children, we understand, but I can help you take care of them. It definitely won’t hold back your career," she persisted, redirecting the conversation to Jiang An once more, a situation that surely would taste bitter for anyone.
Gao Chuan patted the table, his expression stern, and his eyes beneath his arched brows flashing with coldness as he said loudly, "It’s me who doesn’t want children."
The whole family turned their gaze to him after his table pat, and Shen Mei, infuriated by Gao Chuan’s defiance, glared at him, "Why are you shouting? If not now, when do you plan to have them? Do you want to wait until your father and I are in our seventies or eighties to see a grandchild?"
"Alright, alright, none of you should argue," Grandma, who had been sitting quietly next to Jiang An, could no longer bear to watch and interrupted Shen Mei. She may have spoken too forcefully as she coughed twice, wiping her mouth with a handkerchief and trying to smooth things over, "Shen Mei, don’t meddle in the children’s affairs. Having children is up to their will."
If Grandma hadn’t played peacemaker, Jiang An, who had been silent the whole time, wouldn’t have known how to react. She slowly lowered her head, and for some reason, her eyes began to well up with tears again. She heard Gao Lin speak, "I say so, too, Anan has just graduated; it’s not the time yet."
For some reason, Jiang An suddenly felt a heavyweight pressing on her heart, and tears began to pour out uncontrollably. In a soft voice, she said, "Excuse me, I need to use the restroom," and quickly left the dining table.
She didn’t want the elders at the table to see her crying, as it would damage her image.
The girl fled to the restroom at breakneck speed, closed the door to block out the noise, and slowly slid down along the doorframe to the floor, her shoulders starting to heave.
She thought she was strong enough to hold back her tears, but for some reason, hot tears kept streaming down her cheeks unstoppably, and a gloomy mood took over, making her chest feel so tight she could hardly breathe.
Despite this, she still scolded herself at heart: Jiang An, Jiang An, why are you so weak? Why are you crying?
The few people left at the table watched Jiang An hurry away. Gao Lin was the first to express his dissatisfaction. Shen Mei, known for her sharp tongue but soft heart, had been harsh with Ji Wanwan, and now she was making sweeping statements about Jiang An, a young girl. With a sigh, she spoke up to tell her off: "You, you, just tone it down a bit!"
Gao Chuan furrowed his brows; he knew Jiang An would inevitably be wronged by Shen Mei, but he didn’t expect Shen Mei to be so excessive today. Watching Jiang An turn and leave, his heart felt as if it had been stabbed by a knife tip.
This little ostrich, she doesn’t even know how to fight back in front of his family.
"Shen Mei, leave the kids’ affairs to them; let them make their own decisions!" The grandmother spoke up, and Shen Mei, realizing she was in the wrong, deflated a bit. "Mom, I’m just thinking of their best interests!"
The grandmother looked anxiously at Gao Chuan, who was still sitting in his chair without a word, and motioned to him with an urgent point to the indifferent man, making eye gestures, "Go check on Anan quickly!"
Gao Chuan took this as an opportunity to leave the dining table, hesitated for a few seconds in front of the restroom door, then knocked twice and asked, "Jiang An, are you alright?"
Hearing the voice while crouched on the ground and unable to stop crying, Jiang An immediately stood up, walked to the sink, turned on the faucet intending to wash away the tear stains, and replied, "One moment, almost done."
Gao Chuan, listening from outside the door, could clearly hear the sorrow in her voice.
Hearing the running water from inside, Gao Chuan silently sighed and, after waiting two minutes without seeing Jiang An emerge, opened the door himself. The moment he entered, he saw Jiang An leaning over the sink, cupping water to wash her face.
Her face was wet, and it was hard to tell how much was water and how much was tears.
Jiang An, surprised by the sound from behind, turned to see Gao Chuan had already come in, and quickly turned back, apologetically saying, "Dr. Gao, I’ll be right out," as she hastened her actions.
But what troubled her was that the tears just wouldn’t wash away!
Gao Chuan watched the frantic Jiang An in front of him, silently sighed, locked the door behind him, and in the confined space of that small washroom, it was just the two of them. His voice, when he spoke, was a bit hoarse: "Jiang An, let’s have a talk."
The tap was still running, pouring out a steady stream of water, and Jiang An’s movements halted abruptly upon hearing his words.
