Chapter 78: Becoming Colleagues with Dr. Gao

I once loved a person unconditionally, without seeking any reward, or caring for the outcome. — Xicheng Tears

Soon after the defense, mid-December arrived, and it was on this very day when the internship placements were announced that Jing City welcomed its first snow of the winter.

With the initial snowfall, the whole earth donned a silvery white coat; snowflakes like goose feathers fell from beside the window, each ice crystal landing in the girl’s clear, sparkling eyes.

Today, almost everyone had moved out of the dormitory, even Xia Zi had relocated to a rental closer to the hospital for her internship. Jiang An was the last to pack up her bags, wrapping a thick scarf around herself before stepping out.

As expected, she secured a place in the City Hospital’s oncology department with her top grades in the professional courses. The internship would last for half a year, after which she could choose to stay on or look for another hospital. This also meant that for the next six months, she would be sharing a department with Dr. Gao.

When Jiang An left the dorm, a warm hue greeted her; the heavy snow had just cleared, and bright sunlight pierced through the layers of grey clouds, finally breaking through.

Dragging her heavy suitcase, Jiang An was about to hail a cab across from the school to go straight to Dr. Gao’s house when a black Mercedes stopped in front of her. The car window slowly lowered, and Wei Yan, sitting in the driver’s seat, took off his sunglasses as if recognizing the girl in front of him, "Anan, where are you heading? I’ll give you a lift."

Jiang An hadn’t seen Wei Yan for a quite a while and looked surprised, asking, "Brother Wei Yan, what are you doing here?"

While speaking, Wei Yan got out of the car, took the suitcase from Jiang An’s hand, placed it in the trunk, and walked back explaining that he was there to discuss a project with the school’s official.

Wei Yan ran a company that researched robotics, and his return to China this time was to push for the application of robots in the field of medicine, which is why he was collaborating with the Medical College’s lab. He had recently made another trip to the United States for work and had just returned the day before yesterday.

Unable to reject, Jiang An got into Wei Yan’s car. After fastening her seatbelt, Wei Yan reached back and handed her a beautifully packaged box of chocolates, "Brought it back from the United States for you. I was planning to bring it to you at school, but I didn’t expect you to have graduated!"

Wei Yan’s tone was full of nostalgia; time has flowed by and the little girl who used to follow him around had now graduated from university.

Knowing she couldn’t refuse Brother Wei Yan, Jiang An accepted the gift and put it in her bag, then heard Wei Yan ask which hospital she was interning at. She adjusted her seat slightly and replied, "City Central Hospital."

Upon hearing this, a hint of surprise flashed across the man’s eyes, but he forced a smile, glancing at Jiang An in the driver’s seat, and said, "That’s good."

He thought back to the confrontation he had with Gao Chuan at the hospital and now Jiang An was going to work there; he wondered if it was his arrangement.

"Where to?" Wei Yan raised his head and glanced at the rearview mirror; his eyes could just make out Jiang An’s graceful brows and eyes. The girl slightly turned, "Going home, I’ll send you the address, could you set up the navigation?"

Wei Yan silently nodded. So, were the two of them really going to live together from now on?

He remembered the villa he had arranged in the West Suburb after returning to China. When he learned of his mentor’s mother passing away, he immediately contacted the decorators to prepare a room for Jiang An. Knowing she liked blue, he even specifically commissioned a design in blue tones. The house was now ready for handover, but Jiang An wouldn’t be moving in.

The man’s eyes dimmed as he asked in a deep voice, "Is Mr. Gao still treating you well?"

Jiang An, who had been turning her head to look at the scenery, turned back and hesitated for a few seconds before nodding, "Pretty good."

This wasn’t the first time Wei Yan had asked her this. She knew that Wei Yan was also afraid she was being mistreated by Dr. Gao. But it was probably best not to let Wei Yan know about her marriage agreement with Dr. Gao, Jiang An thought.

"How about you, Brother Wei Yan, how have you been lately? Have you met a girl you like here in the country?" Sensing the awkward atmosphere between them, Jiang An tilted her head and asked, revealing a rare gossipy expression.

A golden bachelor like Wei Yan, who had succeeded in business at such a young age, would definitely be a catch in any crowd, surrounded by admirers. However, it seemed to Jiang An, as far as she could remember, Wei Yan had never had a girlfriend.

Wei Yan spun the steering wheel and noticed Jiang An’s curious look, his lips slightly curving, "Why? Are you in such a hurry to find me a sister-in-law?"

The man’s Adam’s apple moved, and even though his tone was teasing, a sour feeling welled up inside him. He too once had a girl he believed he would be with for life, but by the time he made his fortune and came back for her, she was already married.

"Of course, with a catch like Brother Wei Yan, there must be loads of girls who like you. If my mom were still here, she definitely would be urging you too," Jiang An said thoughtlessly, bringing up Fang Qing and making both of them feel a pang in their hearts.

Wei Yan glanced at the wistful girl in the passenger seat and suggested, "Speaking of your mother, I’ve been wanting to visit her lately."

"I was thinking the same. I wanted to tell her about all the recent happenings, so she can be at ease in heaven too," Jiang An muttered, fingers intertwined. Since her mother’s passing, her life had changed drastically. Now, about to start her hospital internship, she could finally give her deceased parents some peace.

"How about tomorrow then? I’m off work tomorrow, and I could go with you," Wei Yan proposed spontaneously after hearing what Jiang An said.

Jiang An pondered for a moment. Since she had already finished up at school and was free the next day, she accepted the offer.

"Should I come pick you up tomorrow?" It was already in front of the residential building. Wei Yan unlocked the car and asked. Jiang An thought that since her parents’ graves were arranged in the East Suburb, it would be inconvenient for Wei Yan to go back and forth, "No need, I’ll just take a cab there tomorrow, and we can meet directly at the cemetery."

Wei Yan watched the girl unbuckle her seatbelt and get out of the car, nodding and murmuring to himself, "That works too."

"Brother Wei Yan, see you," Jiang An had already taken her luggage from the trunk and waved at Wei Yan in the car with a smile.

"Goodbye." Wei Yan watched as Jiang An dragged her luggage into the residential area, only starting the car to leave after her figure had disappeared from view.

Sometimes, letting go of someone is just as hard as falling in love with them.

He couldn’t help but selfishly think about taking Jiang An back, but it seemed fate had already given him a negative answer. Even without Gao Chuan’s appearance, he and Jiang An might still not end up together.

So now, he was trying to convince himself to stay by her side as a brother, but every time he saw the girl’s innocent smile, his heart couldn’t help but throb "thump thump."

This feeling had persisted for nine long years.
