Chapter 77 Dr. Gao Sent Flowers

As night fell and the city lights lit up, the gleaming metropolis shrouded in streams of neon, Ji Wanwan safely escorted Jiang An to her residential building before leaving.

Holding today’s clothes, Jiang An waved goodbye to Ji Wanwan, then turned to go upstairs. When she arrived home, she found Gao Chuan had already returned. As she walked into the living room with her things, she noticed him sitting on the sofa watching a soccer match. Hearing the door open, his gaze shifted to Jiang An as she approached, his eyes flickered slightly, and his tone was as usual when he asked, "Back so soon? What did you buy?"

Jiang An stopped in her tracks and responded indifferently, "Some clothes."

Her mood was already somewhat dampened from the conversation with Ji Wanwan earlier. Gao Chuan seemed to sense Jiang An’s drooping spirits, assuming she was tired from a day out shopping, watching her carry her belongings silently into the bedroom.

He turned back to check his phone messages but found no notice of expenses.

The next day was scheduled for Jiang An’s thesis defense, arranged for two in the afternoon. She arrived at the university early to prepare, nervously waiting until the afternoon to enter the venue.

Just before entering, she was softly rehearsing her prepared self-introduction in her mouth. A WeChat message from Xia Zi reading "Definitely win" came through, causing her to clench her fists, take a deep breath, and step inside.

Dressed in a sharp black suit, Jiang An walked confidently to the podium. She began by respectfully bowing to the panel of professors before eloquently presenting her opening statement, followed by launching into her prepared PowerPoint and step-by-step explaining her research findings to the defense panel.

After answering all the questions posed by the professors present, they discussed among themselves before beginning to announce her defense results. Standing on the stage, Jiang An was secretly clutching at the corner of her clothes. When the professors below announced her grade as "excellent," she couldn’t help but exhale in relief, smiled as she bowed in thanks, then gracefully exited the classroom. Just as she was thinking of telling Xia Zi that her defense had finished, a sudden phone call came in, and upon seeing it was from Dr. Gao, she hurriedly answered.

"Hello, Dr. Gao, I passed my defense!"

Jiang An’s excited voice traveled through the phone line to Gao Chuan, his lips curling into an almost imperceptible smile as he gently said, "Well, congratulations."

Upon hearing his voice, Jiang An’s lips couldn’t help but curve upwards, her face beaming as if it was in full bloom, still basking in the joy of passing her thesis defense when she heard Gao Chuan over the phone asking, "Where are you right now?"

"Just stepped out of the classroom," replied Jiang An.

"Come to the school’s back gate," Gao Chuan spoke in a lowered voice, his magnetic voice resonating deeply with Jiang An’s heart.

Jiang An paused, responded "Okay" over the phone, then turned and ran towards the school’s back gate. Her heartbeat accelerated madly all the way until her eyes settled on a man in a black suit – this was no dream.

He had really come.

The winter sunlight was bright and alluring, with the man standing against it, holding a bouquet of lilies. As he turned, his gaze directly met the out-of-breath Jiang An running toward him. His figure was strikingly upright, his dark hair shimmering slightly in the sunlit gaps, his deep black eyes meeting Jiang An’s, gentle as a breeze.

Watching the girl stopping in place, Gao Chuan’s lips curved into a smile, stepping towards her. Handing the flowers over to her, his thick eyebrows slightly raised, his voice deep and rich, "Congratulations, Mrs. Gao, on passing your defense."

Jiang An suddenly looked up upon hearing the sound, meeting Gao Chuan’s tender and doting gaze. The words "Mrs. Gao" heavily landed in her heart, stirring every nerve.

In the quiet afternoon, there weren’t many people around, and it seemed as if they were the only two left in the world. At this moment, Jiang An could almost hear the chaotic rhythm of her own heartbeat. She lowered her head to look at the bundles of pure white lilies in her arms, her cheeks tinted with a pretty blush, and she shyly replied, "Thank you."

Love at first sight is always a matter of a moment.

It was the first time Dr. Gao gave her flowers, and Jiang An felt she could remember this day for a lifetime.

"Dr. Gao, how come you are here?" Jiang An, holding the flowers, suddenly plunged into the man in front of her, looking up and asking Gao Chuan.

Gao Chuan felt the light fragrance coming from Jiang An as she leaned towards him, reminiscent of the scent of shampoo from a girl’s hair, suddenly making him look somewhat uneasy. His ears quickly turned red in the corner where Jiang An couldn’t see, and he appeared a little at a loss.

"I came to discuss an issue with Professor Chen and thought I’d come see you as well," Gao Chuan said, shifting his gaze away from her, his voice trembling slightly.

Clearly lying.

The slightly weary winter sun draped over them both, and facing the light, Jiang An saw the man before her reveal an unnatural expression for the first time, his eyelashes fluttering, his slender lips curling up.

"Shall we have dinner together tonight to celebrate?" After a moment of silence, Gao Chuan suggested.

Jiang An thought about how she had already arranged with her classmates to go out for a meal after their thesis defense, a hint of disappointment crossing her face as she quietly declined, "I have a gathering with my classmates tonight."

Gao Chuan nodded, thinking that after her thesis defense Jiang An would be considered a university graduate, and it would indeed be a good time for classmates to have a good gathering.

"Have a good time then, and call me to pick you up if it gets late," he gently instructed, completely unaware that every word now showed his care for Jiang An.

Jiang An obediently hummed in agreement, never having thought how wonderful it would be if she could always maintain such a relationship with Dr. Gao.

She was almost completely indulged in this subtle and ambiguous relationship, every smile and caring gesture from Dr. Gao in front of her giving her the false impression that Dr. Gao deeply loved her.

A ringtone from her phone suddenly went off, and Jiang An turned to answer it. Xia Zi screamed in congratulations on her passing the thesis defense over the phone, "The class leader has organized something tonight, let’s go together."

"Got it." Jiang An, with her back toward Dr. Gao, ended the call, turned around with a full smile on her face, and Gao Chuan, guessing she must be busy, mentioned that he had some things to take care of at the hospital and left.

The man walked all the way to his car before his expression finally relaxed, his hands gripping the steering wheel but suddenly forgetting to start the car, his mind filled with the fleeting moments of Jiang An’s expressions. In front of her, he seemed increasingly out of control.

Less than a minute later, Gao Chuan called the restaurant to cancel the reservation for tonight, then slowly started the car.
