Did That Doctor Successfully Remarry Today? -
Chapter 71 - 70 Why Marry Me
Chapter 71: Chapter 70 Why Marry Me
Several days later, the medical summit concluded, and Jiang An returned to her country with her mentor on the next day’s flight. The girl, dragging her luggage, didn’t reach home until the afternoon, and worn out from the journey, she took a shower and went straight to bed to sleep.
Spending the week in a rush, Jiang An was nearly exhausted, the thought of the upcoming thesis defense giving her a headache.
As time quietly slipped away, Jiang An awoke and grabbed her phone from beside her pillow, only to realize it was already eleven o’clock at night. Thirsty, she got out of bed to get some water from the kitchen. She had just turned on the living room light when she heard the sound of the door opening at the entrance. As she walked over, Gao Chuan, who had had a busy day, had already changed into slippers and entered the living room. He noticed Jiang An standing still, watching him intently, which made his dark eyebrows slightly raise, soft ripples emerging in his expression.
Jiang An didn’t expect the man to return home from work at this time. Her gaze fixed on Dr. Gao, who was still dressed in an impeccably tailored black suit that accentuated his broad shoulders and narrow waist, standing tall and striking. His white shirt had the top two buttons undone, revealing a glimpse of his collarbone – if she were to describe him, the word "abstinence" would probably come to mind.
"The summit is over?" Gao Chuan noticed the girl staring silently at him, and took a few steps forward, asking indifferently.
Jiang An snapped back to reality, nodding frantically in front of him. It had been a week since she saw him last, and only now did she realize how much she had truly missed him.
"Why did Dr. Gao come back so late?" Jiang An noticed the tiredness in his eyes and expressed her concern.
Gao Chuan took off his coat, placing it beside him on the sofa, his tone as calm as usual: "There were some issues at the hospital, so I was delayed."
Originally, there was only one surgery scheduled for the afternoon, but he was subsequently informed last-minute about an emergency meeting. As he busied himself, he had forgotten that today was the day Jiang An was returning.
"Have you eaten yet?" They both asked at the same moment, their voices overlapping. A tinge of red appeared on the girl’s cheeks.
"I haven’t. Would Dr. Gao like to eat something? I’ll cook," said Jiang An, who hadn’t eaten anything since getting off the plane and had even heard her stomach growling as she slept.
"Just make something simple."
Hearing him say this, Jiang An happily nodded and hastily went to the kitchen. After rummaging through the refrigerator, she didn’t find any fresh vegetables, which made sense, as Dr. Gao didn’t cook regularly and, of course, didn’t buy groceries.
She finally decided to cook two bowls of noodles with two eggs added – a simple dish for her. About fifteen minutes later, she brought the two bowls of noodles from the kitchen into the living room, where Gao Chuan, who was checking his phone on the sofa, came over as he heard her. He watched as Jiang An set down the appealingly presented mixed noodles on the table, their rich aroma wafting up.
"Since there weren’t many ingredients, I just made some simple noodles to tide us over," Jiang An said as she handed a pair of chopsticks to the man who had already seated himself across from her.
She probably didn’t know that such a simple bowl of noodles was already a substantial luxury for Gao Chuan.
The man tasted the noodles Jiang An cooked, and instantly felt his taste buds released. Within minutes, he had cleaned the plate. It was unclear whether it was because he was too hungry or because it was simply too delicious.
Jiang An, seeing the empty plate in front of him, appeared a bit stunned – it seemed Dr. Gao was indeed very hungry today.
Noticing Jiang An’s peculiar look, Gao Chuan tensed slightly, initiating a conversation to divert attention: "How did you feel about participating in the summit?"
After chewing and swallowing a mouthful of noodles, Jiang An freed her mouth to respond: "It was very good, I saw many impressive people and cutting-edge technologies."
"Oh, right. I also ran into Song Li; he treated me to a meal and told me a lot about Dr. Gao," Jiang An recounted her recent meal experience in a restaurant with Song Li.
Gao Chuan showed no hint of surprise but simply nodded nonchalantly, continuing the conversation: "What did he say?"
Gao Chuan knew Song Li was always talkative. Last time, he had upset Jiang An by saying too much, causing her to drink a lot. This time, who knew what trouble he had stirred up again.
Jiang An hadn’t intended to say anything, but upon hearing Dr. Gao’s question, she couldn’t help but voice the doubts in her heart. She asked impulsively.
"Song Li said... that Dr. Gao is a believer in not marrying," Jiang An’s voice was barely audible, her expression restrained.
She did not know from what stance she asked this, she only knew she wanted an answer from Dr. Gao, even if it was a denial, even if she might feel sad afterward.
The girl’s crisp voice lightly brushed past his ears. The man frowned upon hearing this, his eyes revealing a deep chill, his gaze suddenly shifting to the girl who was still eating noodles.
Jiang An was avoiding his gaze, her head down, shrinking like a turtle, busily digging into the noodles on her plate.
Unexpectedly, he hadn’t thought Song Li would discuss this with Jiang An, much less that she would directly question him about it. The man’s heart trembled slightly, his throat moved but he felt as if there was a fishbone stuck in it.
In fact, he couldn’t refute it because he indeed used to be against marriage, and his decision to marry Jiang An was indeed due to his grandmother’s illness, but now being questioned about it, he felt reluctant to admit it.
He always adhered to his principles; once he determined something, he wouldn’t easily change it, like not getting married.
Hence, he was somewhat puzzled as to why he was so eager to marry Jiang An back then, considering they couldn’t even really count as ordinary friends at that time.
The night sky seemed like a bottomless pool, with a silver moon hanging in the horizon, dim light casting on the two figures, both remained silent, the air unusually quiet.
Jiang An, head lowered, kept picking noodles from her plate and eating them one by one, not daring to look up at the man’s expression at that moment, with only the thumping of her heart proving her existence.
She was very afraid.
After a long while, the man’s somewhat hoarse voice finally rose: "Yes, I indeed believe in not marrying."
The moment the man’s voice fell, Jiang An’s movements froze, and for some reason, her nose suddenly felt sore. Sniffling, as if mustering courage, she looked up to meet the man’s eyes, "Then why did Dr. Gao still marry me?"
Gao Chuan looked into those clear eyes brimming with aggrieved emotions, his intuition told him that Jiang An cared deeply about this question.
However, he seemed unable to provide a satisfactory answer even to himself; he indeed urgently needed a marriage partner due to his elderly family member, but it never absolutely had to be Jiang An.
There were many other fine girls arranged by his family, some well-matched in social status and outstanding, but he ended up choosing Jiang An, whom his family had never met.
Perhaps, the one who really needed an excuse was him.
"Jiang An..." His lips parted, about to speak but a ringtone from the mobile phone on the table interrupted him, he had to stop to pick up the call, standing up from the chair with an anxious tone, "Don’t worry, send her to the hospital, I’ll be right there."
"What’s wrong?" Jiang An noticed the man’s anxious expression and inquired.
"Grandmother had an incident and was taken to the hospital, I need to go there," Gao Chuan spoke as he turned around and headed to the couch to grab his coat.
Hearing it was about his grandmother, Jiang An also grew tense, she hurriedly followed the man, "I’ll go with you."
