Chapter 53: Chapter 52 Dr. Gao Wants to Kiss Her
I really want to grab your hand, flee to the freshly cleared skies and fields, without shrinking back or looking back. — Shu Ting "Farewell in Rain"
Inside the study, which wasn’t too cramped, the air was peculiarly quiet, the afternoon’s golden rays poured through the lattice windows and spread luxuriously across the grey-brown floor. The weak light fell upon the man’s beautiful brows and eyes, his expression still one of disinterest, yet Anan was about to be set ablaze by that stark, naked gaze.
Her heart seemed to have completely spiraled out of control, Anan was forced to lean against the bookshelf behind her, her face blushing with shy redness, the man’s long arms propped beside her face, his slightly cool voice dropping into her ear.
"So what should you do when you encounter a situation like this in the future?" The tone was almost threatening, yet his gaze was inexplicably gentle, his approach slow and coaxing step by step.
Unable to stand such encroaching proximity, Anan tried hard to suppress her wildly accelerating heartbeat, like a simple and harmless little animal, her delicate eyebrows drooping, obediently conforming, "Find... Dr. Gao."
Gao Chuan listened to the girl’s stuttering answer, the impression of a little fool was undeniable, his lips silently curling, his gaze unconsciously drifting as he gazed down at the girl’s delicate face. Anan, it seemed, didn’t have the kind of look that stunned at first sight, her round little face had distinct features and skin like the first snow in winter. And yet, surprisingly, such a pure face was paired with a pair of bewitching fox-like eyes. Gao Chuan, who had never before looked at a girl so closely, became slightly bewildered for a moment, his eyes faintly losing focus.
In the past thirty years, he had never thought about what kind of woman he would fall in love with, never attempting to define his type. Moreover, his friends always dared not to speculate about him because of his icy demeanor, so when he appeared before everyone with Anan, many were caught off guard. No one would have thought that the profound Dr. Gao would end up marrying Anan, a girl of such innocent and cute type that seemed hardly to match him.
The ambiguous atmosphere continued to ferment, and Anan seemed to notice the man’s halted movements, her eyebrows and eyes relaxed slightly as she glanced up, her pale little face caught in the man’s dark pupils, her cheeks as red as blooming flowers.
Collapse, it all seemed to happen in an instant.
Gao Chuan stared at those bright, moving eyes, in silence, gradually attempting to lean down, intending to get closer to the girl’s nose bridge, his movements stiff. Anan, sensing the man’s sudden intention to get closer, closed her eyes in compliance.
Sunlight filled the gap between the two, and the world seemed to only consist of their faint breaths. In the instant where their noses barely touched, a sharp female voice suddenly came from the living room, startling both of them. When Anan abruptly opened her eyes, Gao Chuan had already retreated, his tall figure turning his back on her and stepping out of the study.
"Gao Chuan, Anan, are you home?" The calling voice of Shen Mei came from the direction of the living room. Anan stood dumbfounded on the spot, still savoring what had just happened and couldn’t help but cover her cherry lips with her hand.
Dr. Gao... was he about to kiss her just now?
With her face still flushed, the girl followed Gao Chuan out of the study and saw Shen Mei who had already walked into the living room. Ms. Shen noted with surprise the young couple emerging from the study room one after the other, a peculiar gleam in her eyes. She placed the big bag in her hand onto the sofa, "This is the bird’s nest your second aunt sent over a couple of days ago, brought it over for you to try."
Gao Chuan had already sat down beside the sofa, still taking it easy, his posture elegant, as if the almost provocative actions just now had never happened, his thick eyebrows slightly furrowed.
Seeing this, Anan quickly put down what she was holding to help Shen Mei arrange the gift boxes containing the bird’s nest. Her face still flushed, Shen Mei glanced down at Anan’s hand wrapped in a bandage and asked in surprise, "What happened to Anan’s hand? Is it hurt? How did this happen?"
Gao Chuan, sitting aside, suddenly remembered the instructions from Gao Yu over the phone yesterday, and the next second he heard Anan’s still doubtful explanation, "It’s nothing, just accidentally burned myself a bit at school."
She tells herself it’s a scrape, but by the time she gets to Shen Mei it has become a burn. This girl seems to never have been good at lying; Gao Chuan thinks as a smile unconsciously forms at the corners of his mouth before he snickers out loud, as if he himself didn’t realize he would actually produce an audible laugh. Shen Mei, hearing his chuckle, turns her head to glare at him, then shifts her gaze back to Jiang An’s hand, her eyes filling with suspicion for a moment.
Jiang An, already not very confident, notices Gao Chuan mocking her and her complexion becomes somewhat embarrassing. Her bright eyes slightly lift at the corners, showing a reserved smile.
Shen Mei carefully examines her hand and says that they have golden sore medicine at home and will have the maid deliver it tomorrow. The affection is obvious in her eyes, and Jiang An inexplicably feels a rush of guilt for lying.
"Come over for meals at home for the next few days. I’ll make you something delicious to nourish you," Shen Mei says, pulling Jiang An’s other hand gently. Jiang An obediently nods, and her eyes unintentionally meet with Gao Chuan’s, who is watching their mother-daughter bonding from the sofa. In the moment their eyes meet, his gaze seems to avoid her deliberately, quickly shifting elsewhere.
"The weather is nice these days; you two should go out and enjoy yourselves somewhere. Your father and I will cover the expenses; consider it your first honeymoon," Shen Mei says, stroking the girl’s delicate hand with tenderness.
Jiang An suddenly realizes and looks at Shen Mei with a startled gaze, her emotions beginning to surface.
A honeymoon? With Dr. Gao?
Gao Chuan, silent next to her, seems to sense the girl’s dilemma and is the first to refuse: "Let’s talk about it later; the hospital has been very busy recently."
Upon hearing this, Shen Mei turns her gaze towards Dr. Gao on the sofa, visibly dissatisfied, she complains: "Busy, busy, busy, all you know is work. You don’t even take proper care of your own wife, look what you’ve done to Anan’s hand."
Gao Chuan: ???
"I don’t care about your excuses, by New Year’s Day at the latest you must take Anan out for a trip, how can you call it a marriage if you don’t even have a wedding or a honeymoon?"
"Mom, it’s okay. I’m pretty busy at school this month too. Let’s hold off on the honeymoon for now," Jiang An smiles and tries to defuse the situation. For her, the honeymoon was always optional; it was nothing more than playing a part with Dr. Gao. Besides, it’s possible their marital relationship might dissolve before the honeymoon even happens.
"Don’t make excuses for him. He’s over thirty and still only knows work, never taking care of the home," Shen Mei rolls her eyes dismissively.
By now Gao Chuan understands; ever since he got married, Shen Mei has been displeased with him in every way, while Jiang An was like a precious pearl, held dearly in her hands.
Faced with Shen Mei’s questioning, Gao Chuan does not retort and stays quiet. Shen Mei’s unexpected visit turned into her voluntarily staying to prepare dinner after seeing Jiang An’s injured hand. Understanding Jiang An wants to help Shen Mei in the kitchen but is sent away, upon exiting the kitchen, she sees Gao Chuan sitting on the sofa, lost in thought, and she can’t help but recall the almost kiss between them that afternoon.
If she wasn’t mistaken, Dr. Gao was about to kiss her, right?
