Chapter 52: Chapter 51 I Am Your Husband

After replying to Gao Chuan’s message, Jiang An secretly breathed a sigh of relief, turning her gaze to her left hand wrapped in bandages, and suddenly realized that she, who had never been good at lying, seemed like a professional liar in front of Dr. Gao.

Xia Zi had already bought two cups of milk tea and handed one to her, looking at Jiang An taking it with one hand, pitifully, "Luckily, it’s your left hand. But don’t worry, the doctor said it’ll heal in at most half a month. It shouldn’t delay your internship."

Jiang An nodded absently, listening to Xia Zi advising her to rest well for the next couple of days, saying there was no need to go help Professor Chen temporarily, as the two of them walked and talked.

Suddenly Xia Zi remembered something, reminding her, "Right, have you filled out your registration form? I’ll submit it together with mine tomorrow."

As Jiang An was sipping her milk tea through a straw, she abruptly stopped in her tracks; had not Xia Zi reminded her, she would have completely forgotten about submitting the registration form. It seemed she had left it at Dr. Gao’s place.

It’s doomed, a misfortune that can’t be avoided by luck.

Seeing Jiang An petrified in her spot, Xia Zi tugged on the girl’s sleeve, pulling her back to reality, "What’s wrong?"

"I left it at home," Jiang An voiced her annoyance.

"Then just go get it. I thought you lost it. If it’s inconvenient for you to go alone, I can accompany you."

Upon hearing that Xia Zi would accompany her, Jiang An hurriedly shook her head, "No need, when do we need to submit it?"

"Nine in the morning."

In the afternoon, around one or two, Jiang An took a taxi home. Calculating that Gao Chuan should still be at the hospital, she relaxed a bit when she found the door securely locked.

She searched the bedroom but couldn’t find it, so she turned to the study. She, who was always losing things, was familiar with such situations. She didn’t find the target on Dr. Gao’s desk and began to carefully recall where she had tossed the registration form while writing her thesis in Gao Chuan’s study a few days ago.

Suddenly, Jiang An had a thought that she might have accidentally tucked the registration form inside a medical book she was referencing at the time. After finally remembering the book’s name, she went to the bookshelf to search for its location.

After looking around, she finally found the eagerly sought book on the top shelf of the bookshelf. Jiang An, barely reaching with her five-foot-two stature, tiptoed and stretched her uninjured right hand trying desperately to pull at the book.

However, it was to no avail. Just as Jiang An was about to stand up straight, she suddenly felt someone come close behind her. The next second, the book was taken down by a hand with distinct knuckles. Turning around in surprise, Jiang An found Gao Chuan who seemed to have appeared out of nowhere. After a brief eye contact, he handed the book to her.

Instinctively, Jiang An reached out with both hands but suddenly remembered her injured left hand and reflexively pulled it back. Gao Chuan, expecting her to catch it, was unprepared for her sudden release, and the heavy book fell from his hands to the floor, the registration form slipping out as well.

Jiang An cast her eyes down, quickly squatting to pick it up but didn’t expect Gao Chuan to do the same. Their heads collided unexpectedly, causing a burst of pain. Jiang An exclaimed, "Ah," and upon looking up again, met Gao Chuan’s eyes that shimmered like rippled peach blossoms. The man had already picked up the book from the ground and handed it back to her.

This time, Jiang An was wise, taking it with her good hand. Gao Chuan crouched down to pick up the registration form that had fluttered to the ground, and Jiang An, her cheeks flushed, took it from him, not forgetting to say "thank you."

"Dr. Gao, how come you’re back..."

"How did you hurt your hand?"

Almost simultaneously speaking, Jiang An looked up and met the intense gaze of the man fixed upon her hand, and just as expected, Murphy’s Law had struck, bringing about the very scene she had hoped to avoid.

Gao Chuan, who had come home to rest from the hospital, hadn’t expected to find Jiang An at home. He thought the girl would avoid him for a while because of the injury, but unexpectedly, he managed to catch this little escaped Little Ostrich.

Seeing this, Jiang An pulled her hand back behind her and softly replied, "It’s nothing, just a little scrape."

Burying her head with a guilty conscience, Jiang An suddenly felt the man’s dominant gaze piercing down on her, her cheeks embarrassingly heated as if she was forever lacking confidence in front of Dr. Gao.

Gao Chuan, fully aware of her evasion, heard her stuttering response and did not comment. His eyes slightly lifted and his thin lips pressed together, his deep gaze scrutinizing Jiang An.

"Why didn’t you tell me something like this happened?" After about half a minute, seemingly tired of the awkward situation, Gao Chuan extended his arms and leaned against the bookshelf behind Jiang An, effectively trapping her within his territory.

Realizing her unfavorable position, Jiang An slightly lifted her head, her almond-shaped eyes slightly drooped, and her lips parted softly, "It’s really not serious, I didn’t want to trouble Dr. Gao."

As soon as those words fell, a cold voice came from above her head: "Jiang An, you are not a god."

The girl, who had her head down, looked startled by the sound, her expression suddenly a bit confused. She had thought that Gao Chuan believed her words, but such questioning made her realize that Dr. Gao probably knew everything already.

She tried to explain but found it difficult to speak.

Indeed, she was no god. To others, her risking her life for something like this made her look utterly foolish.

Her memories flooded back like a bursting dam, and she could see again her father, clad in his white Navy uniform, waving goodbye to her from a fishing boat amidst the vast waves.

"I am your husband, and it’s my duty to share burdens with you. Do you understand?" Gao Chuan looked down at the submissive Jiang An, and thinking about the times they had shared over a month, she seemed to bottles up and never initiates contact with him.

Willing to wait in the rain for three hours not to disturb his work, trapped in the mountains still not making a phone call, and now not mentioning Wanwan’s injury, to him, she seemed like a stranger.

Jiang An had thought Gao Chuan would scold her harshly for her recklessness, like others, but upon hearing his words, she abruptly lifted her head, her dark brown pupils dilating.

"Jiang An, not only are you my wife, but I am also your husband, do you understand?" Gao Chuan looked at the puzzled girl, and for a moment, he didn’t know how to phrase what he wanted so that Jiang An would understand, so he stepped even closer, meeting her innocent gaze.

"Mmm." Jiang An, feeling the man’s proximity increase once again, suddenly felt uneasy and flushed, emitting a faint voice.
