Chapter 49: Chapter 48 You Deserve Someone Better

In the evening, drizzle stained the city’s neon lights, and dark clouds covered the sky. When Jiang An walked out of the coffee shop, the weather was still gloomy. Xia Zi’s boyfriend had already crossed the street with an umbrella and walked towards them. After exchanging brief pleasantries with Jiang An, he and Xia Zi hooked arms and got into the car, leaving Jiang An standing alone in front of the coffee shop.

If she remembered correctly, not far from here there should be a bus stop. Just as the girl was about to run for it, a misty blue umbrella suddenly appeared above her head, with rain droplets dripping along the fine patterns to the ground, splashing tiny ripples.

Jiang An looked up in surprise, greeted by a dark black tie, and a deep voice followed above her head, "Where are you planning to go? I’ll give you a lift."

Jiang An slightly lifted her head, her eyes reflecting the man’s sharp and exquisite features. He seemed to have hurried over, with his hair somewhat disheveled on top of his head, and his breathing a bit heavy.

The pattering rain fell on the tip of her heart. In the hazy twilight, Jiang An seemed to panic. In this moment, she felt as if she saw the memory-filled summer from six years ago, when the rebellious youth was waiting for her to finish school under the rain, with a bloodstained mouth from a brawl, yet still waiting calmly and steadily.

After receiving the message from Xia Zi, Wei Yan rushed over hastily, and upon seeing the girl who was about to run into the rain, he dashed towards her.

He was running towards his girl.

After a long while, a stunned Jiang An finally came back to her senses, asking with surprise, "Brother Wei Yan, why are you here?"

Wei Yan remembered that half an hour ago he had been in the office dealing with documents when he suddenly received a WeChat message from Xia Zi.

Xia Zi: Brother Wei, I’ve messed up, I let it slip.

Wei Yan: ?

Xia Zi: I told Anan that you like her.

Wei Yan: What did she say?

Xia Zi: Anan seemed a bit surprised, but when I asked her she didn’t give a clear answer. We are now at the XX Coffee House, you should come over and clarify it with Anan while the iron is hot.

"It was your roommate who told me," Wei Yan replied truthfully, standing in front of Jiang An for the first time feeling somewhat bashful. He didn’t know how Jiang An would reject him next.

Upon hearing Wei Yan’s words, Jiang An moved her lips but couldn’t utter a word.

"Have you eaten? Let me take you..." Wei Yan turned towards the relentless curtain of rain, but Jiang An interrupted him, "No need, just take me home please."

The man’s gaze shifted back to Jiang An, taken aback for a moment, then he numbly nodded his head.

It seemed that he still couldn’t accept for a moment that his girl had already found a new home.

The car sped all the way, both silent, with an atmosphere worlds apart from their previous interactions. Jiang An pretended to gaze at the scenery outside the window, while the driving Wei Yan turned his head to look at the expressionless girl, wanting to speak but feeling choked.

He didn’t know how to begin discussing their feelings. After reuniting with Jiang An after a long time, the lush memories flooded his mind. He admitted to himself that he liked Jiang An, perhaps since six years ago.

But in the end, all he waited for was the news of the girl getting married in a flash to someone else.

Beside him, Jiang An’s thoughts were flying. She was organizing her words, on how to gracefully and decisively reject Wei Yan’s affection. After all, she didn’t want to lose him, as a friend.

The voice in the depths of her heart kept telling her, she had no feelings for Wei Yan, even without her marriage to Dr. Gao, even if she were still single now, she would still choose to refuse.

Emotions aren’t something you can force.

In the brief span of ten minutes, Wei Yan felt an excruciating agony. Once they finally reached their destination, and the man turned off the car engine, he looked to the girl beside him, still staring distantly in deep thought, and said, "We’re here, Anan."

Jiang An pulled herself back to reality, nodded, but she didn’t immediately unfasten her seatbelt. Instead, she turned to face the man in the driver’s seat, and with what seemed like a great deal of courage, she said seriously, "Brother Wei Yan, I’m sorry, you deserve someone better. I’ve always just seen you as a friend."

Hearing this, Wei Yan’s grip on the steering wheel tightened, as if he had anticipated this outcome. Still, when Jiang An said it aloud, it felt as though a knife had been plunged into his heart.

He was too late. His girl had been taken away by someone else.

"Jiang An, I..." Wei Yan nearly choked up as he started to speak. He didn’t know how to confess his feelings to Jiang An and felt an overwhelming sense of guilt even talking about his affection for her.

"Brother Wei Yan, I really appreciate the care you’ve given me recently, but I am already married, and our relationship can only be limited to friendship. You’re so outstanding, surely you will find a better girl," said Jiang An, preemptively asserting her stance as the man hesitated, hoping to put an end to this.

After speaking, Jiang An began to unbuckle her seatbelt to step out of the car, but as soon as she opened the door, Wei Yan had already come out with an umbrella, reaching out to take the hand of the girl in the rain, his voice retaining a hint of hope, "Anan."

Once again the two found themselves under the same umbrella. Jiang An turned and gently shook off Wei Yan’s hand, looking up puzzled at the much taller man in front of her, raising her voice unconsciously, "Brother Wei Yan, I have made myself very clear."

At 6:30, the streetlights at the entrance of the housing complex turned on punctually, illuminating half of each other’s faces under the umbrella, with the fine rain slanting down, and the man’s shoulders, which were exposed outside the umbrella, were thoroughly soaked. Without waiting for Jiang An to speak, Wei Yan, with deep affection in his eyes, looked tenderly down at the girl’s slightly damp face, his soft voice blending with the sound of the rain.

"What? You don’t want anything to do with me anymore?" Although he had a multitude of things he wanted to say, he could only feign indifference.

Looking up, Jiang An’s eyes darkened. Given her introverted nature, if Brother Wei persisted, she might indeed cut off all ties with him. Feeling as if her true thoughts had been prodded, Jiang An lowered her head in a crestfallen silence.

"Anan, you and my mother are very important people in my life. Without you, there wouldn’t be the person I am today. Even if we can’t be lovers, I still consider myself your brother, your family. I will still support and take care of you. Are you going to deny me even that chance?" he said, with each word shining brightly in his dark eyes.

Jiang An, who had been looking down all this time, felt her eyes moisten as she lifted her head to meet Wei Yan’s narrow eyes and heard his meaningful words, "Anan, just like my mother, all I want is for you to be happy."

Tears, unbeknownst to her, started to overflow, and amidst the light drizzle, the comfort under the umbrella granted her an indescribable sense of happiness.

"You also need to find happiness, Brother Wei Yan." Her tears flowed uncontrollably down her cheeks, and as Wei Yan looked at her tear-stained face, he fondly lifted her chin to wipe away her tears, a smile appeared in his eyes, "Of course, your brother here is quite sought after. Maybe I’ll bring you a sister-in-law tomorrow, haha."

The previously despondent Jiang An burst into laughter, her eyes now misty with tears.

As dusk approached, the light grew dim, and the man sitting in the car nearby quietly watched the scene unfold. His handsome face clouded over at the sight of the intimate figures under the umbrella, his emotions inscrutable. He then started the car and drove back to the underground parking of the complex.

Feeling relieved as if a great burden was lifted off her, Jiang An’s mood brightened considerably. She took Wei Yan’s umbrella and strolled into the housing complex, only remembering the WeChat message from Gao Chuan after she had entered the building. Quickening her pace, she entered without seeing Gao Chuan. She was about to put down her bag and search for him in the study, but thinking he might be busy with work, she decided not to disturb him.

Jiang An took a shower in her bedroom, changed into dry clothes, and was about to head to the kitchen to cook something when she saw Gao Chuan coming out of the study. She smiled and greeted him, "Dr. Gao, I was busy and forgot to reply to your message. I got a ride back from a friend."

Gao Chuan, who had reached the living room, nodded coldly in response to Jiang An’s explanation, his facial expression not changing. He moved to the entryway to change shoes, overhearing Jiang An ask, "Dr. Gao, where are you going? Have you eaten? I’m cooking porridge."

The man continued changing his shoes, his voice crisp and formulaic, "I’m on the night shift today."

"Oh, then make sure you eat out," Jiang An said, suddenly feeling like a nagging old mother. By the time she looked over again, the man had already changed his shoes and left the house.

Unaware of what had transpired, Jiang An turned around and scratched her head, wondering why it felt like Dr. Gao was in a bad mood all of a sudden.
