Chapter 38: Chapter 37: Be Happy
Chapter 36 You Must Be Happy
The two of them went to a restaurant opposite the school, where Jiang An took the opportunity to thank Brother Wei Yan for celebrating her birthday the day before by treating him to a meal. Knowing that Jiang An didn’t like to be indebted to others, Wei Yan agreed and handed the menu to Jiang An, who was sitting across from him.
For Wei Yan, everything that happened last night was like a dream. He was still confused when he woke up this morning. He wanted to clear things up by asking Jiang An out, but she refused, so he could only secretly contact her roommate. Discovering that she was heading to the library, he waited at the entrance. Now that he finally had the chance to sit down and eat with Jiang An, he couldn’t bring himself to ask the question.
Both were silent at the dining table until Jiang An took the initiative to break the awkward atmosphere with more words of thanks. The waiter came to serve the dishes, and Jiang An introduced the small dishes that she often enjoyed at this restaurant with a smile.
Wei Yan, who had been silent, took the chopsticks from Jiang An. He had no appetite and asked bluntly, "Did you really marry Dr. Gao?"
Jiang An’s movements stiffened as she was about to serve food to Wei Yan. She remembered much of the previous night and naturally knew why Wei Yan had come to her today, but how should she bring up the marriage with Gao Chuan, which was a pretense staged just for show?
Noticing the stiffness on Jiang An’s face, Wei Yan’s heart hung in suspense, and he raised his voice, "Is there some misunderstanding between you two? If you’re in any trouble, just tell me, and I’ll help you solve it."
Wei Yan’s words were filled with genuine concern and sincerity, causing a tremor in Jiang An’s heart. On the surface, however, she remained calm and lightly laughed off his suspicions.
"No, Brother Wei Yan, Dr. Gao and I got married out of a normal romantic relationship. There’s no misunderstanding."
The girl’s hearty smile entered Wei Yan’s eyes, and he couldn’t detect any hint of pretense. He even momentarily had the illusion that Jiang An’s marriage to Gao Chuan was a happy one.
Still feeling that something was off, Wei Yan questioned, "Previously, you told me that you were just friends, and now, in less than a month, you’re married. Did he bully you?"
Jiang An knew that Wei Yan was worried about her being deceived, but as far as her marriage to Gao Chuan was concerned, she appeared to be a willing participant, with no sign of coercion.
Still, she shook her head in denial and explained, "No, Dr. Gao treats me very well. We decided to get married because we believe we’re the right people for each other."
Wei Yan looked up at the girl, her earnest and moved expression pricking his heart. He stubbornly pressed on, "Does he love you?"
The sudden question exploded in the girl’s mind like a bomb. Love? How could love be mentioned? Perhaps she and Dr. Gao would soon quietly divorce, as per their previous agreement.
Feeling a sense of loss, Jiang An still responded nonchalantly, "Of course, I love him too."
Those few words seemed to crumble the last of Wei Yan’s defenses. The light in his eyes suddenly went out, and he struggled to calm the surge of emotions within him, nodding with a dim expression.
Jiang An saw that his complexion was a bit off, and asked with concern, "Are you alright, Brother Wei Yan?"
"No problem, let’s eat." The man tried his best to restrain his emotions, drooping his eyes and starting to chew the beef brisket on his plate.
During the meal, it was only Jiang An who sporadically spoke a few words. Wei Yan maintained his silence throughout, right up until he dropped the girl back to school in the evening. The man stopped the girl who was about to turn and head back to school, and earnestly admonished, "Anan, I wish you happiness!"
In the faint night, the girl revealed a smile as fresh as a flower and nodded in response, "I will."
Wei Yan watched until Jiang An’s figure disappeared from his view, before turning his head away, staring blankly at the steering wheel in his hands, silently pulling out a gift box from his pocket. Slowly opening it, a sparkling diamond ring instantly merged into the man’s dark eyes.
On the other hand, Gao Chuan, upon learning that Jiang An was staying overnight at the school, headed home as usual. On the way, he received a call from Song Li who said he had something important to tell him about. The weary faced man was going to refuse, but upon hearing Song Li mention it was regarding Jiang An, he turned his car towards the location Song Li had mentioned.
Meeting up, Song Li handed him a file bag as if he had discovered some confidential secret. Gao Chuan opened it to find a thick stack of information all about Wei Yan’s personal details and credentials, and his gaze instantly became a shade darker before stuffing the documents back into the bag.
"Look, I went back yesterday to investigate the man who celebrated your sister-in-law’s birthday. Turns out he’s the boss of a multinational company, recently returned to the country, and recently seems to be involved in a collaboration with your sister-in-law’s school," reported Song Li to Gao Chuan in detail, who listened with an expressionless face and gave no reaction.
Seeing Gao Chuan indifferent, Song Li grew a bit anxious, "I’m telling you, you need to keep an eye on your sister-in-law, lest someone steals her away without you knowing."
Remembering the confrontation from the previous night, Gao Chuan couldn’t help but childishly think that at that time, Jiang An was in his arms; in any case, he had won.
"However, I heard from your sister-in-law’s classmates that she has never had a boyfriend before, this Wei Yan might just be an ordinary suitor, don’t take it too seriously..." Song Li strained to share the information with Gao Chuan but was bluntly interrupted by the latter, who asked with alertness, "Did you investigate Jiang An?"
Song Li found himself at a loss for words by the question, stuttering to justify himself, only to be unequivocally rejected by Gao Chuan, "You should stay out of my and Jiang An’s business from now on, and don’t continue investigating this man."
Song Li, who had wholeheartedly wanted to help Gao Chuan investigate, sulked and inwardly cursed Gao Chuan: Such a blockhead, when his wife runs off with someone else he still wouldn’t have a clue, no wonder he’s been single for the past thirty years.
Watching Song Li looking at him with disdain, Gao Chuan gave him a stare, and the man immediately reverted to a grinning face, "Alright, alright, whatever you say."
Gao Chuan didn’t even glance at that stack of documents in the end. In Song Li’s eyes, he seemed to have full confidence that Jiang An would not fall in love with someone else, not realizing that in this nominal marriage, whether Jiang An loved him or not wasn’t all that important; what he wanted was someone to fulfill the role of his wife.
But when did this thought begin to subtly change? Was it the night of their first sleep together after getting married? Or was it witnessing Jiang An easily blending into the Gao Family? Or perhaps it was the kiss from the night before that seemed already forgotten by Jiang An?
Perhaps even earlier.
He didn’t know, he couldn’t articulate it, he only knew that for the first time in his life, he felt an inexplicable hostility towards a stranger, because of Jiang An.
