Chapter 35 She Had a Spring Dream About Dr. Gao
Those who fall in love always think of fleeing, yet it’s merely closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. — Xicheng Tears
The next day, as dawn broke and the morning light secretly streamed in, the soft light awoke the soundly sleeping Jiang An in her bed. Warm streaks of sunlight surged into the girl’s eyes, and with her mind still groggy from last night’s drunkenness, she struggled to recall the events of the evening.
Wei Yan had celebrated her birthday with her and then drove her home, followed by Dr. Gao opening the door, after which she returned to her own room. Jiang An cautiously lifted the blanket in her hand and seeing that she was still fully clothed in yesterday’s attire, she slowly exhaled in relief.
Her memories rustled, and Jiang An suddenly covered her mouth, vividly remembering that after falling asleep last night, she seemed to have dreamt a dream where she took the initiative to kiss Gao Chuan. At this thought, the girl bashfully buried her face in the blanket, her heart rate abruptly accelerating.
It seemed like she had a spring dream about Dr. Gao.
The dream was so vivid that even now, she could recall the taste of the man’s lips, a mix of a slight tobacco hint combined with a faint mint aroma, which sent her thoughts in an uproar. Her face turned red as blood, as she silently chastised herself.
Jiang An, you pervert!
After a few minutes of mental struggle in bed, Jiang An got up and walked into the bathroom to wash up. The thought of harboring improper thoughts about Dr. Gao caused the girl’s cheeks to involuntarily flush with shame. Guilty, so guilty, it’s utterly sinful, Jiang An silently accused herself, staring at her own reflection in the mirror.
After dressing up, Jiang An sneakily slipped out of her room, cautiously surveying the entire living room. Unfortunately, she ran full into Gao Chuan, who was just returning with breakfast, striking his chest head-on in a panic. She managed to maintain her composure, looking at Gao Chuan and hastily apologizing.
Still with an indifferent expression, Gao Chuan noticed the girl’s flustered demeanor, casually walked to the dining table to set down what he was carrying, and said with his usual tone, "Come have breakfast now that you’re awake."
Still lingering in the living room, Jiang An touched her head absentmindedly and swiftly disappeared from sight, not forgetting to take care of formalities with Dr. Gao, "Dr. Gao, I’ve got something at school, so I have to go now, I won’t be having breakfast, bye."
Her voice fading into the distance, Gao Chuan looked over just to see Jiang An hurriedly putting on her shoes and dashing out. The man watched her flee in haste, a helpless smile tugging at the corners of his mouth as he sat down alone to eat breakfast, feeling a sudden tenderness in his heart.
The fact that Jiang An was a bit of a coward was something he had long recognized; it wasn’t the first time she’d done something bold without owning up to it. The man slowly sipped his morning tea, his deep eyes rippling.
Jiang An rushed downstairs and took the bus to school, the images of Gao Chuan in last night’s dream surged into her mind, unbidden and unforgettable.
After returning to school, Jiang An busied herself looking for hospitals for her internship, accompanied by her roommate Xia Zi. Xia Zi noticed her spacing out and smiling foolishly from time to time, and gave the girl a sharp tap on the forehead, asking, "What on earth are you thinking about all day? You seem so happy."
Caught in her daydream, Jiang An quickly waved her hands in dismissal, realizing she’d been distracted all day, her mind filled with thoughts of Dr. Gao. She vigorously shook her head to force herself not to think about it, hearing her roommate tell her, "Anan, with your grades, you should be able to get straight into City Hospital, not like me having to jump through hoops."
Jiang An glanced at the list of internship hospitals compiled by the school, with City Hospital arguably being the best option available. However, it wasn’t certain she would go there. As she contemplated this, she reached out to comfort her friend. Xia Zi, as if suddenly remembering something, sat up straight, her face suddenly bright with joy as she excitedly said, "Right, isn’t my idol at City Hospital, in the oncology surgery department? If you go there, you might get to see him every day."
Jiang An saw the eager look on Xia Zi’s face and played along on the surface, knowing the "idol" she mentioned was Gao Chuan. As a standout in the field of oncology, the younger girls in his specialty worshiped him like a god, and when he came to the school to give a lecture and was discovered to be handsome, he instantly gained a lot of adoring fans. Xia Zi was among them, and just thinking about him seemed to energize her like she had been injected with chicken blood, "No, I have to work hard and go to City Hospital to see my idol."
Suddenly, Jiang An felt a twinge of guilt. Xia Zi didn’t know that she had already married her idol. If she found out, would it shock her? While thinking about this, Jiang An patted the head of the person next to her, and asked, "Since you like Dr. Gao so much, have you ever dreamed about him?"
After asking the question, Jiang An realized how odd it sounded, but Xia Zi, without any suspicion, looked dreamily at the ceiling and answered, "Of course, in my dreams, my idol is cuddling and hugging me, and even lifting me high in the air!"
Sitting next to her and about to drink water to calm herself, Jiang An heard her blatantly earnest reply and ended up spitting all the water out of her mouth, coughing violently before she managed to recover. Xia Zi, seeing her reaction, gently patted her back, "Why such a big reaction?"
"It’s nothing, nothing..." Jiang An, hand over her chest, finally felt better. Thinking about Xia Zi’s words just now, her face suddenly blushed. Xia Zi, noticing her deliberately avoiding her gaze, leaned in and pressed her, "You don’t have a crush on my idol too, do you? No way, the idol is mine."
Jiang An looked up to see her bulldog-like demeanor and waved her hand pretending to be generous, "He’s yours, all yours."
Her heart felt freed of its burden. Dr. Gao was good-looking, so it was natural for her to have an occasional spring dream about him. Jiang An and Xia Zi, hugging their documents, left the tutor’s office by the evening. After saying goodbye to Xia Zi, Jiang An was planning to go to the library when she received a WeChat message from Gao Chuan.
Gao Chuan: When are you coming back?
It was the first time the man had asked her this, and Jiang An felt her heart skip a beat. Before she could reply, she received another message from him.
Gao Chuan: Should I come to school to pick you up?
The situation seemed to be getting more outrageous by the minute. Seeing Gao Chuan being so proactive today made Jiang An somewhat unused to it, and she hesitated for quite a while before slowly replying.
Jiang An: No need, I’m busy at school, I’ll stay at school tonight.
If she met with Dr. Gao now, she would certainly be asked about getting drunk the night before, and in front of him, she’d surely recall that dream, and she would be utterly embarrassed. Therefore, Jiang An decided on a strategic retreat, figuring that all embarrassing moments would eventually dissipate with enough time.
While she was smugly congratulating herself on her cunning at the library entrance, she suddenly saw a familiar figure. Wei Yan, dressed in a dark black suit, was waiting by the pillar at the entrance. Jiang An walked over with mild surprise and said sweetly, "Brother Wei Yan, what brings you here?"
Wei Yan stood upright and approached her, smiling, "If I can’t make an appointment with you, I’ll take the initiative to come find you."
Jiang An thought about how she had refused Wei Yan’s request at noon, using the excuse that she was busy at school, and felt her face heating up. Hearing Wei Yan ask if she had eaten dinner yet, she intended to muddle through, but the man in front of her suddenly shook his cellphone, "Alright, no lies, your roommate already told me. Come on, I’ll take you to dinner and then bring you back afterward."
