Chapter 249 I Want to Sleep Here
In the morning, Gao Chuan and Jiang An went to the local police station to give their statements together.
As expected, the mastermind behind that group of people was indeed Du Mo, who had attempted to take revenge on Jiang An. With identification and statements from several people, the police acted swiftly and apprehended Du Mo.
The hospital, upon learning of the incident, voluntarily gave Jiang An two days off, but Gao Chuan was not so fortunate. His face bore the swollen marks of a fight, and he appeared at the company’s executive meeting with a band-aid on his forehead, inevitably causing the staff to gossip and speculate.
The rumors eventually reached Gao Yu’s ears, and the man put aside his work and ran to Gao Chuan’s office. As he entered, he indeed saw Gao Chuan with injuries, and immediately started bombarding him with questions.
Gao Chuan managed to shake off Gao Yu’s approaching hand in time and reassured him with a face full of scorn that he was fine, but in the end, it was Secretary Chen who honestly spilt the beans about what happened last night.
Gao Yu, upon learning that his younger brother had played the hero in a damsel-in-distress situation, nodded thoughtfully and said, "That was the right thing to do, after all, she is his own wife."
Turning his head to glance at Gao Chuan, who was still sitting in his chair looking indifferent, Gao Yu feigned surprise and asked, "You even risked your life to save her, and Anan still hasn’t agreed to you?"
Being pointedly reminded of where it hurt, Gao Chuan, who was engrossed in reviewing a planning case, developed a colder expression in his eyes, a touch of faint sorrow within his somber black pupils.
Not only had she not agreed, she hadn’t even mocked him for being old-fashioned yet.
Chasing love is truly difficult; he really couldn’t figure out how Gao Yu managed to so swiftly coax Ji Wanwan into marrying him back then.
Gao Yu, as if seeing through Gao Chuan’s thoughts at that moment, took the initiative to step forward and began to offer advice, "This matter of chasing a woman... you can’t be too passive."
"You need to be both tough and gentle. Sometimes when you need to stick close, you just have to..." The man recounted his own persistent pursuit of Ji Wanwan back in the days, with a rather proud tone.
He had only just begun his story when someone pushed the door open, claiming the person he had scheduled an appointment with had arrived. Gao Yu had to temporarily halt his girl-chasing tutorial and as he got up to leave, he didn’t forget to remind Gao Chuan, "You need to move faster, and when the time comes, hurry up and give Yanyan a little sister for company."
When the office returned to silence, the man put down the planning case that he couldn’t concentrate on any longer, took off the gold wire glasses from his face, and the sharpness in his eyes gradually dissipated, replaced by an overwhelming sense of weariness that spilled over his features.
——
After last night’s ordeal, Jiang An was sent home by someone Gao Chuan dispatched and fell asleep directly on the bed for the entire afternoon.
She too did not expect that a mere workplace dispute would lead Du Mo to make such a ruthless move against her. If not for Gao Chuan’s timely rescue, she might have had slim chances of survival this time.
Over the years, she might not have even noticed herself, but whenever she encountered trouble, her subconscious would instinctively think of Gao Chuan, seemingly becoming an ingrained reflex.
By the time she awoke, it was already near the evening. Unsure how Wei Yan got the news, he had called her dozens of times that afternoon. Jiang An knew he was definitely worried about her being attacked last night and after calling back, she reassured him immediately that she was fine.
"That’s a relief, living alone you must pay attention to safety..." Wei Yan went on and on with his reminders, while Jiang An had already gotten out of bed and walked to the kitchen, pondering over what to cook for dinner while listening.
The conversation eventually settled on Jiang An’s birthday. Wei Yan had already taken the initiative to say over the phone, "This year is your first birthday back in the country, leave the preparations to me."
Jiang An glanced at the date displayed on her phone and then belatedly realized that her own birthday was this coming Saturday. Having no plans of her own, she readily agreed: "You make the arrangements."
After hanging up the phone, the woman walked to the refrigerator and picked out some ingredients, thinking to herself that since Gao Chuan had risked his life to save her, it wouldn’t be too much to cook him dinner as a token of gratitude.
Having made up her mind, she busied herself in the kitchen.
As the sunset faded, night stealthily unveiled itself, and a full moon hung high in the sky, pure and impeccably carved.
Jiang An, who was in the kitchen making soup, heard the doorbell ring outside. She put down her cooking utensils and ran to open the door, lifting her gaze to see Gao Chuan standing there alone. The man was dressed in a black-striped shirt with a finely tailored suit jacket draped over his arm; a stark band-aid on his face seemed conspicuously out of place against his otherwise elegant visage.
The first thing Jiang An noticed was the wound on the man’s face. The swelling at the corner of his mouth had visibly subsided. Looking around, she asked, "Is it just you? Weren’t you going to bring Secretary Chen too?"
When she had texted earlier, she had specifically mentioned that she wanted to express her gratitude to both of them for saving her life.
The man standing at the door cleared his throat and explained earnestly, "He had something come up last minute and couldn’t make it."
Jiang An gave him a half-doubtful look for a few seconds, then without further questioning, she opened the door and led the man inside.
Although Gao Chuan had moved into the apartment above Jiang An’s nearly a month ago, he had never been inside before. Following Jiang An into her apartment, he looked around as Jiang An scurried back into the kitchen, while he was directed to take a seat on the living room sofa.
The man’s gaze curiously swept through the surroundings. Although it was a modestly sized single apartment, the entire place was decorated by Jiang An with a warm coziness that involuntarily instilled a sense of dependence in one’s heart.
Compared to his own empty villa in East Suburb, this place felt more like a home.
After sitting idle for a short while, Jiang An called him over to the dining table. Gao Chuan washed his hands and walked over, stunned by the tantalizing spread of dishes Jiang An had prepared, and sat down to accept the chopsticks she handed him.
"I don’t have much at home, so I just made something simple. Let’s make do with it," Jiang An said while serving him rice.
Gao Chuan nodded in agreement, and at the sight of the sweet and sour fish on the table, something silently and gently poked at his heart.
After going in circles for so many years, he suddenly understood that among all the things in the world, what he yearned for was simply her.
It seemed like an eternity since he last tasted Jiang An’s cooking. The man almost completely devoured everything on the table by the end of the meal, after which Jiang An went into the kitchen to wash the dishes.
Nearly half an hour later, she leisurely emerged from the kitchen. Expecting that Gao Chuan would have left by that late hour, she was surprised to find him still sitting on the sofa in the living room, lost in thought without even the TV on.
Jiang An, who had been planning to shower, looked at him in perplexity. "Why haven’t you left yet? It’s almost nine o’clock."
The implication was urging him to head upstairs promptly.
The man, who had been sitting silently on the sofa, turned his head to meet Jiang An’s puzzled look. Upon hearing her subtle hint to leave, he didn’t get up but spoke with a calm voice, his lips parting slightly: "I want to sleep here tonight."
