Chapter 249 You Are My Woman
"Let her go!" Gao Chuan’s fierce voice echoed in the narrow alley; with one glance, he saw Jiang An being pinned to the ground by two men, and he roared furiously.
He quickened his pace, rushing over with fists clenched, and struck hard at the face of the arrogantly postured man, who staggered back a few steps from the sudden assault.
"Motherfucker!" the man cursed after being hit, but when he turned back, he saw Gao Chuan already fighting with the two men who had earlier restrained Jiang An.
Jiang An, finally free from her restraints, still knelt in the corner; upon reopening her eyes, the tangled mess of fighting figures filled her vision. Gao Chuan, outnumbered and overpowered, was quickly losing ground.
The man’s shirt had been torn, exposing large swathes of chest muscle, and he was eventually pinned to the ground, his cheek already smeared with blood from the scuffle.
Seeing the man bleed, Jiang An trembled, trying to stand, but her legs failed her. She watched the man who had been punched by Gao Chuan approach step by step and brutally kick Gao Chuan in the abdomen, crying with tears in her eyes, "Stop hitting him!"
"Meddling with what doesn’t concern you?" the man hissed at Gao Chuan, then turned to gaze at Jiang An cowered in the corner and sneered disdainfully, "Trying to play the hero?"
"You know you’ve broken the law?" Gao Chuan struggled but couldn’t break free; his handsome face was forced against the ground, his dark pupils filling with a cold fury.
"What, are you threatening me?" the man stepped fearlessly on Gao Chuan’s shoulder and just as he was about to exert pressure, he heard Jiang An’s trembling voice from behind, "Let him go, I’ve already called the police."
The woman held up her phone, which displayed that she had dialed "110," and only then did the group show a hint of fear.
The quick-reacting man rushed over, snatched Jiang An’s phone from her hand, terminated the call, and threw it to the ground. Grabbing Jiang An’s hair, he shook her head and shouted, "You dare call the cops? I dare you to call them!"
At that moment, Gao Chuan lying on the ground, immobile, bit his lip as uncontrollable rage flickered in his eyes.
Suddenly, the sound of police sirens filled the dark alley nearby.
The three men became truly panicked, like startled birds seeking escape but had not anticipated they would be blocked by the arriving police officers.
Jiang An, now out of danger, scrambled to Gao Chuan’s side. His noble face was covered in blood, and as he struggled to raise his head and saw Jiang An with tears streaming from her eyes, he tenderly raised his hand to caress her eyelids, and with a soft voice, provided comfort, "Don’t be afraid, I’m here."
Jiang An looked down at the severely injured man, tears falling "plop, plop," and with a gentle voice that came from her throat, she uttered, "Dr. Gao..."
---
The pair was rushed to the hospital by police escort late at night arranged by Secretary Chen; fortunately, after an examination, they only suffered minor external injuries.
Jiang An woke up the next morning in the hospital, and as she opened her eyes, her mind was dominated by the images of the injured man from the night before.
"Jiang An, you’re awake?" A voice sounded nearby, and turning her head, Jiang An realized it was Xia Zi in a white coat.
Through Xia Zi, she learned that she and Gao Chuan had been coincidentally taken to the hospital where Xia Zi worked. Seeing her unharmed, Xia Zi hugged her emotionally, "Thank heavens you’re okay, it scared me to death, how could you suddenly encounter such a thing?"
Held in her friend’s arms, Jiang An was still shaken by the events of the night before and suddenly looked up to ask, "What about Gao Chuan? How is he?"
Xia Zi saw her worried expression, but couldn’t empathize with the woman’s anxious heart at that time. Instead, she asked, "Since when did you two start living together?"
"Where is he? How is he?" Jiang An clutched at her clothes, repeatedly asking. Failing to get an answer, a sudden panic rose in her heart.
Upon learning that Gao Chuan was right in the next ward, Jiang An almost immediately got out of bed and rushed out. It was only when she, clad in a patient’s gown, recklessly barged in that she saw the man lying on the hospital bed, casting a puzzled look at her abrupt entrance.
Jiang An disregarded Secretary Chen standing beside the bed and rushed to embrace the man, her voice quavering with tears, "You scared me to death, thank goodness you’re okay!"
The man sitting on the bed felt Jiang An softly sobbing on his shoulder and, surprised, lifted his hand to stroke her back twice, whispering, "I’m fine."
Xia Zi, who had followed her in, only realized the situation upon seeing the two embrace, and belatedly said, "I told you it’s nothing serious, why are you so worried!"
Secretary Chen, quite considerately, approached Xia Zi upon seeing the scene, "Dr. Xia, let’s step outside!"
Xia Zi, still holding a grudge against Gao Chuan, was forcibly dragged out of the ward by the man and glared at Secretary Chen irritably before turning away.
For a while, only Jiang An and Gao Chuan were left in the ward. Gao Chuan silently stroked her back. Hearing her sob desperately in his hold, he tried to comfort her, "It’s really nothing, just a superficial wound, I’ll be discharged in a bit."
Jiang An lay on his shoulder, and only after a long time did she finally calm down.
Everything that happened yesterday felt like a nightmare, and she had never been so frightened as the moment the man lunged at Gao Chuan.
When she eventually lifted her head away from his embrace and saw Gao Chuan’s somewhat bruised mouth—knowing that was the injury sustained from saving her the night before—she gently touched it, asking with concern, "Does it hurt?"
Gao Chuan took the hand she reached out with, smiled softly, and said, "It doesn’t hurt."
"You might as well just agree to my proposal sooner if you’re so worried about me." The man gently pulled her in, and Jiang An’s head buried itself in his chest.
His teasing voice overhead made Jiang An’s cheeks flush red. She skirted around his request and, looking up, asked, "Why did you rush up there? Weren’t you afraid of dying?"
Gao Chuan, holding Jiang An in his arms, rubbed his chin gently on her head and softened upon hearing her voice.
In that moment, seeing Jiang An being pinned to the ground, the indignation in his heart erupted like a volcano. He hadn’t thought of the consequences of running up there alone.
All he knew was that in this world, he would not allow even a scratch on Jiang An.
The man’s brows relaxed as he answered seriously, "Because you’re my woman."
No sooner had the words left his mouth than Jiang An, who had been grief-stricken in his arms, suddenly laughed through her tears. Her bright laughter reached Gao Chuan’s ears, causing him to look at her with curiosity.
Jiang An slowly stood up, teasing without reservation, "Who did you learn that from? So cheesy."
