Chapter 244: It Depends on Your Performance

The night sky was deep and ink-like, and the autumn breeze was still mild, with the dim streetlight casting a frail glow.

The moment their eyes met, Jiang An stopped in her tracks, luggage in tow.

Within just a few seconds, the tall figure briskly approached her.

Under the streetlight, Gao Chuan stood tall against the wind, his handsome face slightly weary under the illumination, his eyes fixated on her.

The shock seemed to be too much, a trace of astonishment flashing in his eyes.

Jiang An did not shy away either, gazing directly at the person before her, her gaze softly shifting.

For a moment, all that remained in their eyes was each other, long gazes intertwining with surging emotions.

When Jiang An finally snapped back to reality, she realized the man was silently staring at her, as if he hadn’t seen her for hundreds of years.

She couldn’t help but curl the corners of her mouth, chuckling, "What? Why keep looking at me? You don’t want me to come back?"

Before her words ended, she was embraced by Gao Chuan.

Instinctively, the drum-like beating of a heart resonated against their heartstrings.

His voice was hoarse, seemingly carrying a depth of restrained emotions, slowly settling in her ear.

"I hope, of course, I hope."

She didn’t know that if she hadn’t appeared tonight, he would have been on a plane to Lin City first thing in the morning.

Fortunately, she had returned.

Jiang An was abruptly hugged tighter by the man, hearing his almost choked voice, her nose inexplicably tingled. Raising her hand to pat his back, her chaotic thoughts flitted through her mind, and she withdrew her hand and pushed him away.

"Hey, I haven’t agreed to your pursuit, can you stop being a hooligan all the time?" Jiang An stepped back and looked up at the man with a bewildered and blushed face.

Since she had returned, the answer from before was unspoken.

Since she had decided to start over with him, it had to look like a fresh start.

She couldn’t be deceived home by this big bad wolf again, as in the past.

Hearing Jiang An’s words, Gao Chuan paused for a few seconds before he fully grasped her meaning, his handsome face gradually softened, his lips pursed discreetly, betraying a flowing affectionate smile.

He suddenly felt that the Jiang An he had seen during this period was her true self, or perhaps, the way she should appear in love.

Four years ago, Jiang An in that unequal marriage was always submissive to him, undoubtedly a meek little girl, but now things were different; she was confident and independent, neither servile nor overbearing, with her own thoughts. Although previously seeming cold towards him, he understood, this was Jiang An’s true persona.

"So when will you agree?" The man affectionately watched her pouting, asking.

Jiang An didn’t expect him to ask so directly and was caught off guard, annoyed, she grabbed her suitcase, retorting, "It depends on your performance."

The woman then directly brushed past him upstairs, leaving Gao Chuan standing there watching her back, silently arching his eyebrows.

For that moment, he could hardly wait.

——

Jiang An returned to Jing City not solely because of Gao Chuan. After all, she had lived in this city for nearly twenty years, and her friends, connections, and work were all in Jing City. It was difficult for her to give up everything here.

When Fang Ping found out about her decision, he initially vehemently opposed it, but later, finding it hard to change Jiang An’s mind, he had no choice but to let her return.

However, things were ultimately different than before. She had her own family now, and it was likely that she would often travel between the two cities.

On the night of her return, Jiang An had a sound sleep, and the next morning, she went back to the hospital to report for duty.

She had taken almost half a month’s leave for her trip to Lin City, and had accumulated quite a bit of work. Between outpatient services and ward rounds, she was almost non-stop all day.

She took over a particularly tricky case, and the woman devoted herself entirely to the hospital, coming in early and leaving late for several days. Gao Chuan didn’t even have a chance to ask her out.

So, the man who thought he was about to see a bright future suddenly felt gloomy again, but he wasn’t utterly disheartened. After all, he had been a doctor himself and knew the hardships of the job.

However, pursuing someone should look like pursuing someone, and not being able to meet at all was not acceptable.

So, he just had to show up uninvited.

The day after Jiang An declined his dinner invitation due to a surgery schedule, just after she came out of the operating room, she washed up intending to go to the ward to give some instructions. In the corridor, she ran into Gao Chuan, suited and booted, with Secretary Chen, his ever-unchanging companion, following behind.

She hadn’t expected Gao Chuan to chase her down to the hospital. Without thinking, she rushed over and immediately pulled Gao Chuan aside.

The man, who hadn’t noticed Jiang An before, was led by the woman to the other side of the corridor and stood there, stunned, without speaking.

Jiang An looked at him apprehensively and started criticizing, "What are you doing? Why are you here in the hospital? This place is full of patients and you bring people over, don’t disturb my work."

It wasn’t that she was heartless; she was just really busy recently. Just that surgery alone had taken her several days to prepare.

Not to mention that the two junior nurses who had previously been friendly with her had seen Gao Chuan and knew his identity. Just the man’s eye-catching appearance in the hospital was enough to fuel gossip about her for half a month.

Gao Chuan stood in front of her, and after Jiang An finally finished scolding, he lowered his head and slowly began to explain, "I am not here to see you."

Pointing to the still stunned people in the middle of the hallway, Jiang An turned and looked, only then realizing that she had been focused solely on pulling Gao Chuan away and had not noticed the hospital’s director following behind.

"You are investing in our hospital?" Jiang An realized she had misunderstood the man, and thinking about her spectacle in front of the director, her face turned red with embarrassment.

This was entirely her exposing her own folly.

Gao Chuan, maintaining an undisturbed demeanor, explained the reason for his visit today.

Gao Group and the private hospital where she worked had a medical equipment collaboration project. His visit was due to checking on the recuperation status of the patients, and he hadn’t expected to run into Jiang An in the hallway.

"However, it’s nice to see you," Gao Chuan said softly, his gaze still on the still confused Jiang An.

While the two were still conversing, the puzzled director approached, seeing Jiang An’s flushed face and asked, "Dr. Jiang, what’s going on?"

Why did she suddenly, inexplicably, pull away their VIP client?

Jiang An, realizing her superior had approached, immediately showed a sheepish smile and lied that she had mistaken someone else, then turned to Gao Chuan pretending to apologize, "Sir, I am really sorry for the inconvenience."

Watching her in front of him trying to disassociate herself from him, Gao Chuan’s dark eyes deepened. As Jiang An turned to leave, heedless of the people around, he grabbed her and directly asked, "What time do you get off work today?"

Jiang An: "..."
