Chapter 243 She’s Back

"Sis," as Fang Mo hurried towards himself, he curiously looked behind the woman, where in the darkness, the silhouette of a person and a car could be distinctly seen, yet the face was indiscernible.

Jiang An reached the youth swiftly, blocking his line of sight, and heard Fang Mo ask, "Who is looking for you so late at night? Mom and Dad sent me to check."

"It’s nothing, let’s hurry inside," Jiang An, pulling Fang Mo, rushed towards home. Under the dim light, she looked back at Gao Chuan, who was still standing in the same spot and had not walked away, also gazing in her direction.

The siblings pushed and shoved each other as they went through the door. Fang Mo, sensing Jiang An’s peculiarity and a bit slow to react, grilled, "Sis, it isn’t your ex-husband looking for you, right?"

In the youth’s voice was a tinge of anger, as if just the mention of Gao Chuan could send him into a rage. But when Jiang An heard him ask such a question, what she showed was more surprise and doubt, because after arriving in Lin City, she had not openly shared the fact that she had been married once, and she had always thought that her family did not know that Gao Chuan had come to Lin City.

Before she could speak up to ask, Fang Mo naively let the cat out of the bag, protesting heatedly, "Sis, don’t let that kind of scumbag fool you again. It seems my punch last time was too light; he even dares to harass you!"

The indignantly filled Fang Mo only realized that he had slipped up when his words ceased. He turned back to see Jiang An looking at him with a puzzled face, and in regret, he started slapping his own head.

"He’s met Uncle before, right?" Hearing Fang Mo’s words, Jiang An could roughly guess what had happened before and wanted to confirm.

Fang Mo, having let slip, had to spill the beans about the day Gao Chuan came to visit, and after Jiang An got the news, she was not overly surprised or resentful. After all, she knew that both uncle and brother were protecting her.

"Are you okay, sis?" Fang Mo, observing Jiang An’s lost and woeful expression, inquired.

Jiang An came back to her senses, curved her lips in a small smile, and said softly, "I’m fine, let’s go in."

After all the commotion, Jiang An returned to her room, seemingly unconcerned on the surface, yet still pondering over the events that just unfolded downstairs.

So, he had taken the initiative to look for her.

He wasn’t indifferent after all.

Once Fang Mo got home, he told his parents about seeing Gao Chuan downstairs. Having known there was contact between the two after they arrived in Lin City, Fang Ping’s face went dark, ready to confront Jiang An immediately, but Gu Jing stopped him, "Don’t act rashly, perhaps Anan and the young master of the Gao Family have some misunderstanding."

"Hmph, what misunderstanding could there be? She had a miscarriage; it’s clear they’re taking advantage of our girl." Fang Ping couldn’t suppress his fury when he thought of this. Jiang An had a sad enough childhood already, and now grown up, she encountered such a scoundrel; as her uncle, he couldn’t swallow this bitter pill.

"Don’t just storm over impulsively. Arguing with the child is not the solution," Gu Jing, relatively calmer, pulled at him, patiently advising, "Everything you know is from hearsay, we need to ask them the full story of what happened back then before we draw conclusions."

While the two of them were pulling at each other downstairs, Jiang An, clad in pajamas, descended without them noticing. The couple spotted Jiang An who had reached the sofa, and fell silent by mutual accord.

Gu Jing, fearing Fang Ping’s sudden impulse, blocked in front of him, putting on a facade of nothing being amiss, and smiled at Jiang An, "Anan, why are you still not sleeping this late?"

Though Jiang An saw them arguing, she didn’t catch the content of their discussion about herself, slowly approached them and took Gu Jing’s hand, gratefully saying, "Uncle, Aunt, thank you for taking care of me during this time."

"What are you talking about, we’re family!" Gu Jing interrupted her, her tone seemingly chastising Jiang An for suddenly mentioning such things.

Jiang An had been separated from them for many years, and they were fully aware of the hardship she endured. They wanted to treat Jiang An as their own daughter going forward. Ever since Jiang An came to their home, they had been taking care of her meticulously, just in hopes that Jiang An would feel comfortable and experience the warmth of family.

Looking at Jiang An, who seemed hesitant to speak, the elderly couple wore puzzled expressions, waiting for what she would say next.

After much hesitation, Jiang An finally mustered up the courage to look at them squarely, and confessed, "I’ve made up my mind."

"I’m planning to go back to Jing City."

----

In a blink of an eye, almost a week had passed since Gao Chuan left Lin City. Back in Jing City, the man devoted himself wholeheartedly to his work, drowning in company affairs daily, having reverted to his solitary lifestyle.

Secretary Chen, as usual, reported his work, watching the man seated in the office chair still exuding an air of exhaustion, his cool demeanor as though nothing could perturb him.

"President Fang’s side has already restored our capital chain, and we can put the product operations on the schedule now." The man reported methodically, and upon mentioning the cooperative project with Jiang An’s uncle, he couldn’t help but sneak a glance at Gao Chuan.

The man retained his nonchalant expression, indifferent to even lift his gaze.

Just as Secretary Chen was about to leave the office after finishing his report, he finally heard Gao Chuan asking, "Are there any new projects in Lin City recently?"

Secretary Chen muttered to himself, thinking, wouldn’t it be easier for him to just ask about an excuse to visit Jiang An under the pretense of a business trip?

Although he knew his boss was deeply missing Jiang An, as a responsible executive secretary, he mercilessly answered, "No."

Expecting Gao Chuan would drop the matter, Secretary Chen turned to leave, but unexpectedly behind him came Gao Chuan’s detached voice: "Arrange it for me, I’m taking a vacation."

Secretary Chen: "..."

It wasn’t until around eight o’clock at night that Gao Chuan, dragging his weary body, returned to his apartment. Since Jiang An had left, there was no need for him to stay here, but with his non-stop working, it didn’t matter where he lived.

As usual, the man parked his car and walked to the entrance, only to be suddenly struck by a distinctly familiar voice in the deserted street.

He whirled around, indeed spotting Jiang An getting out from a taxi nearby. The driver had just helped her retrieve her luggage from the trunk, and she pulled out her suitcase, thanking the driver.

She laughed lightly as she bade farewell to the driver, turned around with her suitcase, and when she looked up, she saw Gao Chuan, rooted to the spot, gazing intently at her.

The man stood alone in the dimly lit hallway, his gaze piercing through the vast night and resting upon her.
