Chapter 233: Replay of Past Drama

The evening lights were just coming on, and night had quietly descended.

Jiang An had not expected the birthday party to be such a grand affair. By the time she changed into her evening gown and entered with Gao Chuan, the banquet hall was already filled with high-profile guests.

She was led by Gao Chuan to find Shen Mei and Gao Lin. The elderly couple, upon seeing Jiang An and Gao Chuan arrive together, couldn’t stop smiling joyfully. The old master graciously accepted Jiang An’s gift and was especially affectionate towards her in the presence of strangers.

Gao Chuan, as the vice president of the company, had to leave Jiang An to entertain some of the partners who had come. The man, glass in hand, was laughing and chatting with a group of people.

Amidst the clinking of glasses, he would occasionally glance around, searching for Jiang An among the crowd.

Many people at the event had noticed Jiang An and were whispering to each other, curious about the identity of the woman whom the old master personally greeted. Word got around about Jiang An’s former status as a daughter-in-law in the Gao family, and thus her past was exposed.

Several young ladies from prestigious families took the initiative to strike up conversations with Jiang An, crowding around her.

Jiang An could not bear their flattering and ingratiating manners and soon felt unwell. Not long after, she walked out of the banquet hall alone.

The noise finally faded from her ears as she adjusted her skirt and slowly walked down the stairs.

The cool evening breeze brushed her face, finally dispelling the irritation in her heart. She looked up slightly and saw a round moon, chill as a tranquil pond.

It was nothing like the warmth inside; the surroundings were indescribably silent.

As the woman was staring at her shadow, lost in thought, a strange man’s voice suddenly came from behind her, "Miss, you really do have an elegant taste!"

Jiang An, startled, lifted her head to see a strange man who had already stood next to her. Like those at the party, he was dressed formally, with an impressive bearing.

Finding someone suddenly by her side, she felt uneasy and, upon hearing the man mention that she resembled an old acquaintance of his—thinking it was just another cliché approach—she excused herself on the grounds of feeling unwell and turned back to the party.

She ran into Shen Mei, who seemed to understand that Jiang An did not want to deal with the social scene and had a servant take her to a hotel room to rest.

Jiang An was finally able to escape the suffocating atmosphere, relieved to leave the commotion behind.

Finally shedding her facade, she relaxed, ate some desserts brought by Shen Mei, and lay on the bed scrolling through her phone for a while before she unknowingly fell asleep.

Gao Chuan had drunk quite a bit today. Usually, he could hold his liquor in such settings, but midway today, he inexplicably felt parched and his head was burning hot.

Secretary Chen, noticing that something was off with him tonight, quietly asked if he needed to rest upstairs.

After toasting the last glass of wine and delegating his tasks, Gao Chuan went upstairs alone.

There was a room in the hotel that he regularly used for rest. The man opened the door and immediately yanked off the tie around his neck, but the stuffy heat in his chest did not subside.

He intended to return to the bedroom to rest, but upon entering and seeing the woman lying on the bed asleep, his gaze suddenly darkened.

Suddenly, he remembered the glass of wine Shen Mei had someone deliver to him, and the man’s brows furrowed instantly.

His body was still unbearably hot, and he glanced at Jiang An, who was still sound asleep in bed. His entire body tensed up all at once, and he was wracked with an uncontrollable itch.

His mind became instantly foggy, his face flushed red with the sensation of his body’s strange stirrings, and he silently clenched his fists.

Just as he stood by the bed, Jiang An on the bed stirred and slowly opened her eyes to see him. She sat up, puzzled, and asked, "Dr. Gao, what are you doing here?"

Gao Chuan was taken aback and wanted to turn around and leave as soon as he realized Jiang An was awake.

He had never expected that, after so many years, Shen Mei would still resort to such despicable tactics, wanting him and Jiang An to relive their old drama.

During the four years of Jiang An’s absence, he had longed countless times for another intimate encounter with a woman, reminiscing how he had once kissed her brow and eyes, and how she had swayed in his arms.

But it definitely wouldn’t be the scenario unfolding right now.

The very moment the man tried to leave the bedroom, he stumbled over something underfoot, almost plummeting to the ground. Jiang An, who had already gotten out of bed, saw the man’s staggering silhouette and hurried forward to help him. She bowed her head, only to be stunned by a glimpse of the bloodshot eyes looking back at her, and asked with concern, "What’s wrong with you?"

Unexpectedly, the man steadied himself and deliberately avoided her gaze, as if he were fiercely restraining himself, and roughly shook off her hand, his voice hoarse as he said, "Go away, don’t come near me."

Jiang An realized the man was resisting and was genuinely shocked. She couldn’t figure out what was wrong with Gao Chuan, but noticing his flushed cheeks, she instinctively reached out to touch his forehead, checking if he had a fever. Hardly making contact with Gao Chuan’s burning forehead, she found her hand suddenly seized and was forcefully pushed against the wall.

With her wrist gripped by the person before her, she looked up only to meet the man’s intense, searing gaze boring into her, sending a chill down her spine.

The woman blinked frantically, her swiftly fluttering eyelashes stirring a tranquil breeze that, to Gao Chuan’s eyes, seemed provocatively tempting.

It was not until the man pressed close to her that Jiang An felt the stirring in the body of the man before her and finally realized, her face flushing as she asked, "You... you’ve been drugged, haven’t you?"

Upon hearing this, Gao Chuan suppressed a surge of impulse and slowly let her go, his deep voice commanding, "Get out!"

Jiang An stood up in a fluster, cautiously asked, "Do you need me to call a doctor for you?"

"Get out!" Gao Chuan pivoted away, ordering sternly once more, his fierce expression like that of a roaring, vicious wolf.

Only after Jiang An hastily left the room did the man start to strip off his shirt and step into the bathroom. He reached out and turned on the showerhead above, and the cool stream of water cascaded down instantly, like fine rain flowing down the carved contours of his cheeks, following the lines of his tense muscles to land on the floor, creating no small splash around his feet.

Jiang An jogged out of the hotel room, the image of the man’s bloodshot eyes causing her to shudder uncontrollably.

If the man had not been exercising extreme restraint, who knows what terrible outcome might have unfolded that night.

She also wondered how Gao Chuan was doing now, thinking that being drugged like that must be agonizing. Silently, she returned to the banquet and looked for Gao Chuan’s secretary based on her memory.

Upon learning of Gao Chuan’s drugging, Secretary Chen immediately called for a doctor. When he entered the room, he saw that Gao Chuan had finished showering and come out, the man finally cooling down after a tumultuous ordeal.

The world actually holds such a woman, who without doing anything, almost silently claimed his life.
