Chapter 227 To See You

The person you dream of in a dream is the one you should go see upon waking. — "New Bridge Lovers"

Jiang An spent the afternoon strolling with a friend and arrived home after dinner to find that it was already night.

In the sparse moonlit midsummer night, the hazy moonlight was like a thin mist woven from silver gauze, spilling down in tendrils, while the dense tree shadows were cast upon the street, the only sound in the utter silence was the rustling of leaves dancing in the wind.

Jiang An strolled leisurely along the old street on her way home, her black hair occasionally lifted by a gentle breeze from her shoulders.

As she approached the entrance to Jiang An’s house, she saw, from a distance, a familiar figure standing under the moonlight-shrouded shade of trees.

Under the tranquil moonlight, the man’s tall figure was exceptionally prominent, leaning against a car behind him, seeming to be looking down at the ground.

Jiang An stood still for a moment, then lifted her feet to walk over.

Her high-heeled shoes clicked "pat-pat" on the pavement, drawing Gao Chuan’s attention from his thoughts. He lifted his head and saw Jiang An approaching; his eyes flickered and he gradually straightened.

The man’s figure was lean, standing by the door waiting for her, casting a thin, elongated shadow on the ground.

Silently gazing at the woman approaching slowly, waiting for her to come to his side.

Finally, Jiang An stood still in front of him, bringing with her a familiar scent of jasmine flowers.

"It’s so late, what are you doing here?"

Jiang An knew that for the man in front of her, finding out her address was easy, much like how he had effortlessly found out about her return to the country.

The moonlight cast a faint glow upon Jiang An’s face, her vision not completely clear, her charming eyes seemingly twinkled with stars.

"I came to see you," the man said, his Adam’s apple moving in his throat, his voice slightly hoarse.

At the sound, Jiang An was taken aback for a moment, her eyes narrowing, and she couldn’t help but curl up the corners of her mouth, her face blooming with a gentle smile.

Gao Chuan watched the smiling Wanwan in front of him, his handsome brows finally relaxing a bit.

It seemed like this was the first smile Jiang An had shown him since her return to the country.

Could it mean that his persisting pursuit was finally bearing some fruit?

Unexpectedly, in the next second, the woman spoke directly, "Now that you’ve seen me, you can go."

The man stood frozen in place, wishing to call after her but suddenly unsure of what to say.

He watched as Jiang An went upstairs, a simple "good night" left unsaid.

Once the silence enveloped him again, he looked towards the window of Jiang An’s house, annoyed, and sure enough, the light turned on within a minute.

It suddenly reminded him of the night four years ago, just before Jiang An left the country, when he had driven his car beneath her building and sat alone in the car until midnight.

No one would know just how tormented he was that night.

After returning home, Jiang An sent a message to Xia Zi to let her know she was safe, then went straight to the bathroom to take a shower.

Half an hour later, when she came out, she dried her hair while casually walking into the living room to turn on the TV, tuning in to a variety show she had been following and poured herself a glass of milk in the kitchen.

She didn’t know when it became a habit, but she needed a glass of milk every night to help her sleep.

Sitting on the couch for just a few minutes, the image of the man downstairs resurfaced in her mind. She hesitated momentarily before walking over to the window, drew back the curtains, and looked down to see Gao Chuan’s car was still parked downstairs.

He was still there.

Jiang An withdrew to the living room, forcing herself not to think about it anymore, and focused on the TV screen.

The variety show that used to make her laugh until her stomach hurt somehow felt dull today. She turned it off with the remote control after watching half of it and glanced at the time—it was nearly ten o’clock. Thinking she had nothing else to do, she decided to turn off the living room lights and go to bed.

She wondered if Gao Chuan would still be waiting downstairs at this late hour, and got up to take a look. She saw that the black car was still parked in the same spot.

Jiang An stood by the window for a few seconds before drawing the curtains closed.

Lying in bed and staring at the ceiling, she felt uneasy, her mind inexplicably replaying the man’s brief words from earlier, "Came to see you."

As expected, Dr. Gao was still the same as before, reticent, unable to utter a single pleasant word.

After tossing and turning for a long time, the woman irritably pulled out her phone from beneath and searched for Gao Chuan in her contacts. She hesitated for quite some time before sending a message.

The man sitting in the car was smoking when he heard the WeChat notification sound. Realizing it was from Jiang An, his heart jumped.

Jiang An: It’s late. Head back soon.

The dim glow of the phone screen leaked a faint light, and the succinct words fell into Gao Chuan’s dark eyes. The man silently curled the corners of his lips.

She had noticed him.

Could this mean she still had some feelings for him?

A few seconds later, another message came through.

Jiang An: I’m just worried the security guard will come and catch you.

After sending the message, Jiang An held her phone and stared at it for several seconds, feeling this should prevent any misunderstanding. Just as she was about to stuff the phone back under the pillow, a message from Gao Chuan came in.

Gao Chuan: Okay

Gao Chuan: Sleep early

There was also an "Good Night" emoji attached, one she had used a long time ago.

Jiang An’s weekend was doomed to be restless. The next morning, she was awakened by a ringing phone call. It was from Gao Yan.

Only then did she belatedly remember that she had promised to accompany the child to the amusement park on Sunday.

Upon learning that the child was already waiting for her downstairs, Jiang An got up, washed and got ready at top speed, and hurried downstairs.

The eight o’clock sunshine was soft but not scorching. As soon as she stepped out of the apartment, her eyes were filled with brightness. She was looking around for the person when she heard a familiar voice of a child not far away.

"Sister, we are here."

Jiang An turned around abruptly and sure enough, she saw the child sitting in the car, waving a little hand at her and giving her a sweet smile.

She waved back and was about to run over when she realized something was amiss.

Ji Wanwan was supposed to accompany them according to the original plan, but the car in front of her was clearly the one Gao Chuan had parked downstairs last night.

Indeed, it was only when she approached that she noticed the man in the driver’s seat. Seeing her puzzled expression, Gao Yan even explained, "Sister, my mom has something to do today and couldn’t come. Uncle brought me here."

"Is it okay for Uncle to join us at the park today?" The child asked from inside the car, big watery eyes filled with pleading.

While internally criticizing the shamelessness of using cuteness as a weapon, Jiang An turned to look at the man in the driver’s seat, who was calm as ever, and she could only nod in agreement.

"Great, sister, get in the car!" Yanyan clapped with excitement. As Jiang An moved forward to open the door and get in, she tugged at it a couple of times before realizing that the man had locked the rear car door.

Jiang An: "..."

Her gaze shifted to Gao Chuan in the driver’s seat, who still wore an expression that revealed nothing, not even glancing at her.

Childish.
