Chapter 222 You Are Mine
Two days later is Gao Yu’s birthday, and coincidentally, Ji Wanwan has just invested in a new bar, gathering a large group of friends for the celebration.
She only learned afterwards that Gu Yi had a fiancée arranged by his family. Ji Wanwan apologized to Jiang An over the phone and took the opportunity to invite Jiang An to attend the birthday party as well.
Jiang An worked a bit overtime at the hospital and hurried over. By the time she arrived, most people had already gathered.
As soon as she pushed the door open, Ji Wanwan ushered her to sit on the sofa in the middle, enthusiastically introducing Jiang An to the friends around her.
Since it was Gao Yu’s event, it was expected to run into Gao Chuan. Many people on site were aware of the relationship between Jiang An and Gao Chuan and turned their heads to look towards Gao Chuan, who was accustomed to sitting in a corner.
Indeed, the man sat in the dim corner as always, his usual cool demeanor making him a distinctive sight.
Gao Chuan obviously did not like such parties, and it was a mystery why he showed up today. Even after he arrived, he sat alone in a corner, not participating in games or drinking much.
To others, he appeared cold and uninteresting, and if not for his exceptionally handsome face, probably not as many wealthy daughters would be so keenly attracted to him.
Ji Wanwan knew that Jiang An would feel awkward upon encountering Gao Chuan, pulling her to sit far away from where Gao Chuan was, with a group of people starting to play games on another sofa, while a few stayed on the other side to drink and chat.
Every now and then someone would go up to request a song, and amid the boisterous music, the group’s laughter was incessant.
Jiang An joined in the games next to Ji Wanwan, which included nothing more novel than the typical truth or dare. She fulfilled expectations by being the second one picked, hesitated for a long time before drawing a card from the pile.
Revealing it in front of everyone, they all leaned in and saw the task written on the card: "Make eye contact with a person of the opposite sex on site for 30 seconds."
Thankfully, it wasn’t too extreme. Jiang An breathed a sigh of relief.
In the corner, Gao Chuan lifted his eyes while listening to the laughter of the group and saw Jiang An being encircled by people, making eye contact with another unfamiliar man, with many others clapping and egging them on around them. Seeing this scene, the man’s eyes gradually darkened, and he started to drink silently.
He knew full well that he had come for Jiang An.
Yet, from the moment Jiang An entered, she had not once glanced his way.
He had originally not planned to drink today, but now couldn’t help the irritation welling within him. He grabbed a bottle of alcohol from the table and drank several harsh swigs, the cool liquid burning down his throat, instantly igniting a wave of fiery heat.
On the other side, Jiang An, having completed her dare, hurried back to her seat. Ji Wanwan, seeing her flushed face, loudly joked about it. The group followed with teasing, and the man who had chosen to make eye contact with her also blushed.
The games that followed became increasingly risqué, even including tasks such as kissing someone with tongue. Jiang An was not so liberated and, knowing her own unlucky streak, excused herself from the game midway.
Sitting by herself on a sofa to the side, she felt much calmer. Bored, she turned to look at the karaoke stage and noticed someone singing; she decided to give it her full attention.
While she was intently staring at the lyrics on the prompter, Gao Chuan suddenly moved from the corner to sit silently next to her.
Jiang An sensed the man’s approach and her breathing hitched.
Her first instinct was to stand up and leave, but then she thought, why should she always be the one to avoid him? She was the one sitting there first; if anyone should leave, it should be him. In the end, she stayed put without moving.
The two sat a fist’s width apart, their gazes not lingering on each other, like two strangers.
The man maintained his silence, Jiang An simply acted as if he didn’t exist, her gaze still fixed on the singer not far away.
After a while, a song ended, Jiang An returned her gaze and picked up a cup of alcohol from the table, sipping it lightly, savoring the taste when she saw the man beside her lean slightly forward, slid another cup of alcohol towards her and nonchalantly suggested, "Drink this one, it’s lower in alcohol content."
The man narrowed his eyes slightly and finally turned to look at her, his voice warm and his eyes filled with emotion.
Jiang An looked down at the pale blue cocktail the man had pushed towards her and inexplicably thought of the time the man had said she wasn’t good-looking in the bar days ago, responding coldly, "No need, I can drink now."
Gao Chuan, who was sitting next to her, heard her impatient tone, like a docile lamb scolded by its master, his expression quietly dimmed, and he started drinking one cup after another from the table.
Jiang An noticed he was continuously drinking, a slight ripple stirring in her heart, but she said nothing to stop him.
How much he drinks is his own business; it has nothing to do with her, the woman thought to herself.
The atmosphere in the room remained lively, in contrast, the two of them were exceptionally silent, the man once again sitting silently beside her, burying his head and drinking without a word.
Ji Wanwan, who was playing games over there, noticed Jiang An had stepped out and turned her head to see her sitting on the other side, calling her over.
Jiang An heard her and responded, standing up intending to leave her seat, but before she could straighten up, she was pulled back by the hand from behind her, forcing her to glance back at the man.
Gao Chuan still maintained his original posture, sitting on the sofa, his expression hazy as he toyed with his glass, the pale yellow liquid bouncing steadily with the tilting of the glass, a few tiny droplets splashing onto the tabletop.
"Wanwan, come over here!" Ji Wanwan, not far away, saw her standing by the sofa without moving and called out again.
Jiang An, in a hurry to break free from the man’s grip, found her wrist grasped tightly by him, feeling her struggle, he lifted his gaze to look deeply at her, his drunken eyes blurry as he asked, "Where are you going?"
Under the dim light, Jiang An looked at the man in front of her with flushed cheeks, sensed something off in his tone, guessed that he was somewhat drunk, and patiently replied, "I’m going over there to play, let go of me."
Gao Chuan didn’t seem satisfied with her answer, still holding her wrist firmly, his eyes suddenly darkening as he moved his lips slowly, "You’re not going anywhere. Stay by my side."
Their tugging had already drawn the attention of many, watching the once couple now so intimately holding hands, with many onlookers starting to gossip.
Jiang An noticed the peculiar glances from the crowd, leaned over to forcefully pry the man’s hand away, and whispered, "You’re drunk, let go of me first."
The attention of the entire venue focused on them, and Jiang An, in front of everyone, only wanted the man to let go quickly, not expecting that at the end of her words, the man’s grasp tightened even more.
Like a child being unreasonable, he petulantly said, "You’re mine."
His words were concise, declaring his ownership.
Jiang An was taken aback, her cheeks flushing with a surge of red, and as she tried to raise her hand to cover the man’s mouth, the person in front of her quickly grabbed her other hand, pulling her to his body, repeating the phrase, "You’re mine."
Under the not-so-bright light, dark waves seemed to well up in the man’s deep eyes as he spoke with unusual persistence.
Upon witnessing this scene, everyone was stunned, unsure whether to believe their eyes.
Jiang An furrowed her brows, forgot to struggle for a moment, and the next second, without warning, the man wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his head on her stomach.
The man murmured to himself, repeating the phrase over and over again, "You’re mine."
