Chapter 216 - He Said It’s Not Good-Looking
The music blared loudly, dancing lights blurred the scene, and a group of scantily clad men and women unabashedly gyrated their waists on the dance floor under the dimly lit background, creating a deafening cheer.
The restless air was permeated with the smell of tobacco and alcohol, interspersed with brilliant neon emanating.
Jiang An followed Xia Zi closely, moving their bodies slowly to the rhythm of the people around, the woman naturally had a graceful figure, her skin under the fluorescent lights white as jade, her waist twisting slightly and slender as a water snake, her black hair cascaded over her shoulders, exceptionally sensual against her black dress.
"You know, having been stifled at home, you should really go out and socialize more," Xia Zi’s voice mixed with the clamorous music and reached Jiang An’s ears; he got up and moved closer to shout loudly into her ear, "Drink less!"
Xia Zi, however, dismissively waved her hand, insisting that since they were out, they should enjoy themselves to the fullest, then pulled Jiang An’s hand and danced wildly again.
Under the dim lights, a man with a cold expression silently watched the slim figure of the woman not far away, his icy gaze particularly piercing, giving people goosebumps.
Beside him, Song Li also caught sight of Jiang An dancing freely among the crowd as pointed out by his friend, and turned to see Gao Chuan’s almost ferocious expression; he couldn’t help but chuckle and fanned the flames by saying into the man’s ear, "Your sister-in-law is really letting herself go!"
Song Li’s gaze went over her distinctive slender figure; remembering the first time he saw Jiang An in Gao Chuan’s house years ago, the innocence and shyness of a student, not at all like the allure she exuded now.
But four years had passed; it was only natural for Jiang An to have matured, Song Li mused internally.
The expressionless man, hearing his teasing, deepened the chill in his eyes and silently drank the alcohol at hand.
Seeing this, Song Li slightly curved his lips, thinking to himself how long he could endure.
The night was enchanting, and the party atmosphere only grew; later, Xia Zi excused herself to the restroom. Soon enough, alone among the crowd, Jiang An felt uneasy and made her way to the bar on her own.
She sat alone, quietly watching the bartender show off his skills.
Her sharp shoulders and slender waist outlined, the exposed skin on her back as white as snow, her long black hair enchanting; her back was incredibly inviting, and being unaccompanied, soon enough someone approached to strike up a conversation.
Hearing a strange man take a seat next to her and block her view, Jiang An reflexively turned her gaze away.
The man couldn’t help but turn to look at her, her bright eyes and beautiful teeth, her face stunning, clearly not disappointing; a fire sparked in his eyes instantly.
Jiang An, inexperienced in rejecting people, found the man presumptuously ordered a drink for her, offering a very cliché line, "Miss, are you alone?"
Jiang An slightly lifted her head and found the man staring straight at her, his words teasing and clearly suggestive.
"I’m sorry, my friend is waiting for me," she said, turning to leave her seat, but was suddenly grabbed by the arm. The man held her delicate wrist, pleaded, "Give me a chance, beauty!"
Jiang An, noticing the man’s bold movements, looked alarmed, tried to break free, but he did not loosen his grip.
"Come on, don’t hurry off, have a drink with me!" The man, who had previously feigned gentlemanliness, immediately revealed his true colors, attempting to touch Jiang An’s face as he saw her struggle.
"Let me go!" Jiang An ordered in panic, struggling with the man when suddenly a shadow in black came over and removed the man’s hand, quickly shielding her. Jiang An moved her wrist around and then looked up to see the broad back of the newcomer, with Song Li’s voice reaching her ears.
"Sir, making things difficult for others is not very fun." Song Li dismissed the previous man in just a few words and turned around to see Jiang An looking up at him, kindly asking if she was alright.
Jiang An lightly tugged at the corners of her mouth and thanked him, then exchanged a few pleasantries with the man.
"Sister-in-law, I’ll teach you a few tricks to fend off drinkers in the future. You don’t need to bother with such hooligans," Song Li said with a laugh.
Jiang An nodded and turned her head to look for Xia Zi, unsure why she had been gone so long.
"Did your friend leave?" Song Li looked at her searching demeanor and asked with concern.
"She went to the bathroom," Jiang An explained. As soon as she finished speaking, Song Li invited her to join him and sit for a while to avoid further harassment.
Calculating that Xia Zi should be back soon, Jiang An reluctantly followed the earnest request of the man, only to instantly regret it when she reached the couch.
It’s a small world - Song Li hadn’t mentioned that Gao Chuan would also be there, and several of the men there drinking, who had mostly met her before, enthusiastically greeted her as "sister-in-law."
"No no no, not sister-in-law anymore, we’re divorced," Jiang An timidly explained to them.
Unexpectedly, the group, seemingly uncaring, forcibly pushed her next to Gao Chuan, unabashedly teasing, "Sister-in-law, you’re dressed so beautifully today. My brother has been sneaking glances at you for a long time, he’s almost crushed his glass!"
The ridiculed Gao Chuan remained composed, sipping his drink quietly, as Jiang An sat next to him. The heavy scent of perfume lingered, and the man maintained a stern expression, his deep gaze hard to read.
The few friends nearby only vaguely knew about their quick marriage and divorce four years ago, and made a few unguarded jokes, asking about Jiang An’s life studying abroad.
At this point, Jiang An was extremely uncomfortable, sitting up straight and answering a few questions indiscriminately, relieved only when the group turned back to their drinks.
The man by her side had unknowingly finished two more drinks, and the two were like strangers, hesitating to speak.
Jiang An sat upright, relieved that their questioning had finally ceased. She quietly took out her phone, about to message Xia Zi on WeChat, when she suddenly heard the magnetic voice of the man beside her.
"It’s not good-looking, not good-looking at all."
His voice was dull and icy cold, devoid of any warmth.
Jiang An turned her head at the sound, seeing the man with half-closed eyes, speaking without raising his gaze to her, his cheek slightly flushed from drinking, his tone seemed to be scolding her.
Was he saying she didn’t look good today?
Under the dim lights, Jiang An’s heart stirred slightly, she rolled her eyes silently, trying to suppress her anger as she continued messaging Xia Zi.
Whether it looked good or not, it’s none of his business.
Soon, she received a reply from Xia Zi, only then did Jiang An find out that Xia Zi had been picked up halfway by her husband, thoughtlessly leaving her behind.
Feeling slightly annoyed, she put down her phone, tapped on the couch dejectedly, and inwardly complained about Xia Zi’s disloyalty, when she suddenly felt a warm hand touch her fingertips.
