Chapter 215: At Most an Ex-Husband
After reversing the time difference, Jiang An began her busy life upon returning to Jing City.
Previously, she had sent her resume to a well-known private hospital in China and received a response. After a successful interview, the hospital gave her some time to handle the handover procedures.
While organizing her documents, Jiang An realized she needed to obtain a certificate from City Hospital, and returning to her original department meant she inevitably had to encounter Gao Chuan. After much hesitation, she still chose to take a taxi there.
Although she had only interned in the oncology department for less than a year, Jiang An had always had a good relationship with her colleagues. Upon reaching the familiar floor, many greeted her with surprise, and they would have probably surrounded her if they weren’t so busy with work.
Four years had passed, and there were many new faces in the department. During a casual conversation, a young nurse couldn’t help but sigh at how swiftly time had flown, expressing regret upon learning that Jiang An was returning to take up a position at another hospital.
Regardless, her internship here had provided Jiang An with much valuable experience and left her with many memories she’d rather not recall.
Jiang An took her certificate to the department head for signing. Initially, she was worried about encountering Gao Chuan, but she didn’t see him at all during the whole process.
Just as she was feeling relieved and about to leave, she unexpectedly met Dr. Bai, who had just finished his rounds, right outside the department head’s office. The man was surprised to see Jiang An and greeted her warmly.
The two chatted in the corridor for a while. Dr. Bai was the only person in the department who knew about her relationship with Gao Chuan back then, and couldn’t help but complain, "You left so abruptly back then, we were all caught off guard."
Listening to the man’s reproachful words, Jiang An smiled faintly without responding.
At that time, she had a miscarriage and was hospitalized for more than ten days. After being discharged, she hurriedly resigned from her job, and many were curious about the reasons, which she never mentioned.
The man looked down at Jiang An, who had changed quite a bit over four years, and sighed, "Now that both you and your husband are gone, there’s no joy left in the department."
He reminisced about the times he teased the couple in the cafeteria, which added some fun to his monotonous work.
Hearing this, Jiang An was puzzled and blurted out, "Dr. Gao left as well?"
Seeing the skeptical look on Jiang An’s face, the man detailed the personnel changes in the hospital. Two years ago, Gao Chuan resigned due to pressure from his family and now serves as the vice president of Gao Group. Dr. Bai couldn’t help but feel emotional, thinking how Gao Chuan had once been a leading figure in the department, and how he had given up his beloved profession, a significant loss for the department as well.
Jiang An stood frozen in place, slowly digesting this sudden news, her brows furrowed with a hint of alarm.
Dr. Bai called out several times to bring her back to reality. After a few more words exchanged with her, he was promptly called away by a colleague.
Jiang An waved goodbye to him and left the hospital.
On her way back, she thought about Gao Chuan’s resignation. She had long known that Gao Lin and his wife didn’t approve of Gao Chuan’s career, but she didn’t expect the man to eventually compromise.
She vaguely recalled the scene years ago at University A, where Gao Chuan, a man of few words, spoke eloquently about medical issues on the podium, surrounded by a professional and confident aura.
During her internship at the hospital, she was fortunate enough to be invited to observe a tumor removal surgery performed by Gao Chuan. The man was serious and meticulous on the operating table, skillfully making precise movements without overlooking any details, and his advanced expertise was breathtaking to many.
In the cramped operating room, he seemed like an omnipotent deity, calmly combating death.
Therefore, she initially couldn’t believe at the hospital that Gao Chuan would resign. Now that she has calmed down and accepted the reality, her heart couldn’t help feeling melancholy.
She could almost imagine the scenario where the old man forced Gao Chuan to resign. She felt a pang of sympathy, but then she thought that no matter how regrettable, it ultimately had nothing to do with her.
They were already divorced. For her, Gao Chuan was at most an ex-husband, the woman convinced herself.
In the afternoon, Jiang An returned to the hospital to complete her own employment procedures, and as she walked out, she received a call from her friend Xia Zi.
The news of her return had already reached Xia Zi, who had been too busy at the hospital to get away until today when she finally had time to ask Jiang An out.
Jiang An readily agreed, but she didn’t expect Xia Zi to ask her to meet at a bar.
"To celebrate your return from studying abroad, we won’t leave tonight until we’re drunk," Xia Zi said, pulling her into the restroom to change clothes.
Jiang An was dragged along, and seeing the sexy little black dress that her friend had prepared for her, she hesitated, "Is this really necessary?"
Xia Zi rubbed her head, looked her up and down, and chided, "Anan, you really need to perk up. Being single abroad for four years is one thing, but now that you’re 28, you really need to hurry up and find a man."
"At the bar?" Jiang An retorted.
Xia Zi stared at Jiang An’s conservative demeanor, silently criticizing inside, feeling sorry for such a pretty face.
"Why are you so rigid, I’m not asking you to find true love at the bar, but making more friends wouldn’t hurt!" Xia Zi urged persuasively, urging her to quickly change clothes.
Jiang An glanced at the dress in her hands, an off-shoulder style with a large open back, thankful that the hem wasn’t too short, which was still within her comfort zone.
"Your husband doesn’t mind you being so flirtatious?" Jiang An glanced at Xia Zi, who was already dressed in a sparkling short dress, and curiously asked.
The woman simply rolled her eyes and angrily cursed, "Don’t worry, he’ll be my ex-husband soon."
Jiang An finally realized the real reason Xia Zi was anxious to call her to the bar; it turned out she had come to unleash herself after an argument with her husband, disguising it as welcoming her back home.
Eventually, Jiang An changed her clothes and was pulled into the dance floor in the center of the bar by Xia Zi. Jiang An, who rarely frequented nightclubs, found herself overwhelmed in the noisy crowd, awkwardly moving her body according to Xia Zi’s lead.
With the throbbing beats and the shimmering lights, the handsome men and beautiful women, the endless saga of nightlife unfolded.
Gao Chuan usually didn’t like such places, but he still braved himself to meet Song Li’s invitation. Sitting boredly in the corner of the sofa sipping his drink, he suddenly heard someone asking him, "Bro, isn’t that your sister-in-law?"
