Chapter 213: The Whole World Thinks She Hasn’t Divorced
As dusk sets in, clouds tinted with sunset hues slowly float across the sky, casting an orange glow over the earth. A gentle evening breeze wafts through, bringing waves of fragrance from the flowers and trees.
Shadows under the sunset stretch long and thin upon the ground.
Holding the Water Gun and Yanyan, who are engaged in a "fierce battle," Jiang An reflexively turns her head when she hears the surprised voice of a child, and sure enough, she sees Gao Chuan, who she hadn’t noticed standing behind her. The man is dressed in an exquisite deep grey suit, his figure sharp against the light yellow halo.
The man stares at her with an icy demeanor. Seeing her disheveled appearance, his thick brows instantly furrow and a hint of displeasure flashes in his eyes.
Jiang An unexpectedly meets his gaze, noticing Gao Chuan’s grim expression, and a rush of warmth spreads across her face.
Feeling as though she’s been caught doing something wrong, she guiltily lowers her head.
While the two are facing each other, Yanyan excitedly rushes forward, her little mouth sweet as honey, incessantly calling out "Uncle!"
When Jiang An looks up again, she sees Gao Chuan has already comfortably picked up the child. The man’s stern expression softens, his eyes filled with adoration as he asks the person in his arms if they missed him.
Yanyan, held by Gao Chuan, nods incessantly, appearing close and affectionate with her uncle.
Left out on the side, Jiang An finally realizes her skirt around the waist is completely soaked, a chill filling her entire body, and she shivers.
Just then, Gao Yu enters through the main gate, holding several bags of various sizes.
From a distance, he sees the three figures, strikingly different in appearance. First noticing Jiang An next to the uncle and niece, he exclaims with joy: "Jiang An is here!"
Jiang An hears Gao Yu’s voice and smiles, nodding her head.
Gao Yu notices the fine droplets on Jiang An’s face and seeing the Water Gun in Yanyan’s arms, his face changes as he starts to scold the child: "Gao Yan, look at what you’ve done to Auntie. Quickly come down and apologize!"
This casual mention of "Auntie" shocks Jiang An.
Being continuously addressed as the Second Young Madam by the Gao Family, she attributed it to them not having time to correct themselves. But now being referred to as "Auntie," they really think she and Gao Chuan haven’t divorced.
Jiang An does care, but due to the presence of children, she does not immediately retaliate.
Yanyan, pulled down by Gao Yu, earnestly apologizes to Jiang An. The child, likely scared of Gao Yu, immediately switches from his audacious demeanor to a timid one.
Only when Jiang An cooperatively says "It’s okay," does the tension in the air begin to thaw.
Ji Wanwan, hearing the commotion in the yard, steps out and, upon seeing Gao Chuan, her face momentarily stiffens.
She asks Gao Yu if he bought everything, and Gao Yu gestures with the bags in his hand, "All bought, right here. Jiang An, stay and have hot pot with us tonight."
The hot pot was specially prepared by Ji Wanwan for Jiang An, but little did she expect Gao Yu to silently invite Gao Chuan as well.
The moment Gao Chuan appears, Jiang An didn’t feel like staying any longer and attempts to politely refuse. However, Ji Wanwan directly pulls her inside, insisting, "It’s specially prepared for you. Knowing you can’t get this taste abroad, I had Gao Yu buy the ingredients specifically. It wouldn’t be the same without you."
With the conversation at this point, and the couple’s hospitality hard to decline, Jiang An had no choice but to stay, following Ji Wanwan upstairs to change her clothes first.
Having returned to the country yesterday and encountering Gao Chuan two days in a row, she could clearly see these were not mere coincidences.
Jiang An, who didn’t want to have anything to do with Gao Chuan anymore, was caught off guard when she returned to the country. The whole world seemed to think that she and Gao Chuan had not divorced, wildly accusing her of things.
Little did they know that the two had been complete strangers for four years.
Ji Wanwan and Gao Yu were helping with the ingredients in the kitchen, the woman already looked distressed, yet unaware of how awkward the upcoming hot pot meal would be.
During the afternoon conversation, she could tell that Jiang An was extremely cautious around Gao Chuan. Unexpectedly, Gao Yu invited Gao Chuan over without her consent, leaving her unable to explain herself in front of Jiang An.
After changing her clothes, Jiang An came downstairs and noticed her nephew and Gao Chuan playing with toy cars in the living room.
The woman turned her head and saw Gao Chuan gently helping the little one operate the toy car’s remote control, his eyes filled with indulgence, a stark contrast to his usual reserved and serious demeanor.
She had never seen such a tender side of Gao Chuan and couldn’t help but stand still on the stairs.
She had thought that time was enough to forget the past, but at this moment, she inappropriately remembered the child who had passed away early four years ago.
If that accident hadn’t happened, their child would probably be as old by now, she thought absent-mindedly.
Jiang An’s thoughts were interrupted by Yanyan calling her "sister" from downstairs. She quickly regained her senses and walked down the steps, and the little kid rushed up to hug her legs and pulled her towards the center of the living room.
"Sister, come and play with us."
The little kid, unaware of the awkwardness between them, naturally pulled Jiang An next to Gao Chuan.
Gao Chuan, who was crouching down helping the kid operate the toy car, looked up to see Jiang An in a black long dress, his eyes still unflustered.
Innocently, Yanyan treated them both as playmates, turning to Gao Chuan and saying, "Uncle, give the remote to sister, I want her to play with me."
Gao Chuan, hearing the little one calling Jiang An "sister," his brows flashed a hint of peculiarity.
Uncle, sister, clearly a gap in generation.
Jiang An was forced to take the remote from Gao Chuan’s hand and crouched down, puzzled by the different colored buttons.
She grew up playing with dolls and knew nothing about these boys’ toys.
The little kid leaned beside her expectantly, Jiang An had to lower her head guessing the function of the buttons underneath and tentatively pressed a few, only to have the nearby toy car sway uncontrollably left and right.
"Wrong, sister, stop it quickly," the little kid urgently instructed her.
Jiang An, anxious, completely panicked, not knowing which button to press to pause, randomly hit a red button.
The toy car suddenly started honking loudly, only then did she realize it was the horn button.
As she faced the seemingly out-of-control toy car, a cool breath suddenly came from behind, and the tall figure of the man silently approached, his cool voice mixed with warm breath cascading down.
"Press here."
By the time Jiang An reacted, the man’s slender fingers had already reached over to help her press the pause button on the remote control.
The woman felt a chest pressing against her back, a look of astonishment immediately appearing in her eyes.
