Chapter 21: Chapter 20 The Large-Scale Inducement Scene
Jiang An, the star of today’s gathering, was incessantly quizzed by everyone about her relationship with Gao Chuan. She patiently answered each question, and got along quite well with all the elders. Shen Mei was particularly pleased to see the girl diving into the kitchen to lend a hand.
"Shen Mei, your daughter-in-law is really sensible!"
"Yeah, indeed, your family’s Gao Chuan is truly blessed."
Hearing such praises about her, Shen Mei laughed heartily. She had always liked clean and neat girls like Jiang An, and now that Jiang An had become her daughter-in-law, it seemed like a stroke of luck that matched her own desires perfectly. Watching Jiang An bustling around in the kitchen, Shen Mei’s fondness for her only grew.
At lunchtime, everyone took their seats together, and Jiang An sat down beside Gao Chuan. They had both been too busy to see much of each other in the morning, and Jiang An felt it was so unfair to see Dr. Gao looking so relaxed after she had been nervous all morning.
"Here, Jiang An, let me get you some chicken soup." One of Gao Chuan’s aunts directly ladled a full bowl of chicken soup for Jiang An, who hurriedly expressed her thanks. She was just about to take a taste when she heard her say, "You two must be trying for a baby by now, right? You really should nourish yourself well right after getting married."
"Yes, yes, yes, I’ve prescribed tonics for my daughter-in-law before. I’ll give you the prescription when I have time; you’re too skinny, don’t suffer when it’s time to give birth."
Shen Mei’s eyes lit up at the relatives’ comments, turning to face Jiang An and Gao Chuan across from her, "Your aunt is right. You should start getting ready."
"No rush, let’s wait until Jiang An graduates," Gao Chuan stated calmly and firmly, showing no change in expression, while Jiang An nearly sank her head into the chicken soup.
"You’re not getting any younger, it’s about time for a child. And Jiang An is at the right age. If you find it troublesome later on, just bring the child over, and I will take care of it. It won’t interfere with Anan’s studies," Shen Mei offered, while also placing a crab on Jiang An’s plate.
Jiang An noted how her plate had filled up without her realization, thanking them repeatedly, expecting Gao Chuan to find an excuse to decline. But as she looked up, she heard the man beside her compromise in a deep voice, "Understood, we’ll consider it."
Jiang An: ?
They had only agreed to keep the marriage for six months, no mention of this matter, and moreover, having a child should...
Her thoughts buzzed in her head, and her face flushed involuntarily.
The guests didn’t stop at Gao Chuan’s response but started giving the young couple all sorts of advice, like ’sour for a girl, spicy for a boy’ and so on. Jiang An’s face got even redder as she listened, frantically scooping rice from her bowl in an attempt to hide her inner panic.
"What’s wrong, are you feeling unwell?" Gao Chuan, noticing her flushed face, leaned in and quietly asked.
"No... not at all," Jiang An quickly denied, and looking at Gao Chuan’s calm face, she couldn’t help but want to give Dr. Gao a thumbs-up. It was no wonder he was a clinician, his psychological quality was truly high.
After lunch, a group of young people chattered about playing mahjong to pass the time. Although Jiang An had grown up in the Southern region, she was never particularly skilled at mahjong and could only quietly watch by the side. Gao Chuan was coerced to join in to make up the numbers, and Jiang An obediently sat behind him, learning little by little.
"Younger sister-in-law, do you want to play?" A female cousin from Gao Chuan’s mother’s side invited Jiang An, who was only watching. Jiang An smiled and waved her hand, "No, no, I’m not very good at it."
"Let my second brother teach you, my second brother is quite the tough guy." The speaker laid out a tile, which just happened to match the winning tile in Gao Chuan’s hand. The man pushed the tile forward and whispered, "Hu."
"Ah, no more playing, it’s always the second brother who wins." The cousin spread out her tiles while pretending to be angry and then had an idea, suggesting to everyone, "How about the little sister-in-law plays a couple of rounds for the second brother? Otherwise, we are going to lose everything today!"
"Yeah, yeah, second brother, let the sister-in-law have a go too!" Someone else chimed in.
Jiang An, who initially just wanted to quietly watch from the sidelines, hastily shook her head, thinking to refuse. Gao Chuan turned his head, saw her face of resistance, slowly stood up, and vacated his seat, "You take over for me; I need to use the washroom."
With no other choice, Jiang An braced herself and took the seat. Gao Chuan watched her nervously shuffle the tiles and leaned over to whisper in her ear, "Just play however you like."
"Oh, okay," Jiang An replied as she followed everyone’s rhythm and began to draw tiles, carefully recalling the rules she knew from her childhood and Gao Chuan’s playing style, diligently fumbling through.
In reality, everyone else was just feeling a bit spiteful watching Gao Chuan win so much, thinking of "getting back at him" through the mahjong novice Jiang An. Gao Chuan, of course, read their minds and, after using the washroom, thought it wouldn’t be nice to leave Jiang An all alone at the table and returned. He expected Jiang An to be utterly defeated, but to everyone’s surprise, the newcomer girl’s luck kept getting better and better, she even won several games by drawing her own winning tiles, causing the other three players to endlessly complain.
"Little sister-in-law, you’re tricking us. You call this not knowing how to play?" The cousin who had suggested the switch was now filled with regret.
Gao Chuan stood behind her, astonished, watching her confidently deal with the tiles and took a seat, planning to watch the battle. Jiang An, unaware of Gao Chuan behind her, laughed with hands on her waist, "Pay up, pay up, no cheating, okay."
That happy expression, he seemed to have never seen Jiang An smile like that at himself. The man was momentarily spellbound, his gaze landing on his little wife who was beaming at receiving money, feeling a sudden softness in his heart.
"Second brother, the little sister-in-law is fooling us. She doesn’t call this not knowing how to play; she’s clearly a dark horse," complained the person opposite, as Jiang An turned her head to see Gao Chuan, who had taken the seat behind her, and sheepishly smiled. She dropped her smile, bowed her head reverently, and rose to give the seat back to Gao Chuan, only to be stopped by his hand.
"Who was the one who was clamoring for her to play just now?" Gao Chuan looked up and down at the other person, with a tone full of mockery.
To his surprise, Jiang An was playing so well. Although he had braced himself for a total loss, Gao Chuan lowered his eyes to observe Jiang An who was continuing to shuffle the tiles, wondering how many more surprises she had that he was yet to know about.
Several rounds resumed, with Gao Chuan quietly sitting behind Jiang An, observing her play. He discovered that she was imitating his style and couldn’t help but slightly curve the corners of his mouth up, watching her concentrate.
As evening approached, relatives started leaving one after another. Gao Chuan also wanted to take Jiang An and leave, but Shen Mei kept holding on to Jiang An tightly. As it became apparent that it was just the two of them left in the house, the man frowned and reminded her, "Jiang An, don’t you have to return to school tomorrow?"
Jiang An then belatedly remembered that today was the weekend. As she saw the sky outside getting darker, she stood up, intending to say goodbye to Shen Mei, but Shen Mei held onto her, "A University is close from here; let Gao Chuan take you there tomorrow."
"I have to work tomorrow," Gao Chuan cut in coldly, seemingly aware of Shen Mei’s thoughts.
"Then tomorrow I’ll have someone drive Anan there. It’s not easy for you guys to come here, so stay tonight. I have prepared the room for you. Tomorrow morning, I’ll have someone send you to school. Stay the night and keep your mother company," Shen Mei still clutched Jiang An’s arm, urging her to stay. Anan, feeling unable to refuse, reluctantly agreed.
Gao Chuan watched the two chatting happily on the couch and sighed in resignation before he first stepped into his bedroom.
