Chapter 20: Chapter 19: Divorce Will Be Very Troublesome Later On

Jiang An called out anxiously twice before Gao Chuan, who was standing at the doorway lost in thought, snapped back to reality. He walked up behind her, and the curves of her fair-skinned back, tightly wrapped in a black lace bra, were fully displayed in his wavering gaze. He took a deep breath, his eyes solemn, and his gaze slightly distant.

Jiang An was aware of her own awkward situation. Her cheeks flushed red as she clutched her skirt, her waterfall-like black hair draped over her delicate shoulders, and a faint touch from the man behind her as he leaned in made her lower her head and bite her soft lips.

Gao Chuan used his fingers to gently remove the strands of hair caught in the zipper and slowly ran his fingertips over Jiang An’s smooth skin. The girl in front of him trembled sharply as the man swallowed hard and deftly pulled up the zipper.

A husky voice sounded from behind her, "All done."

Gao Chuan straightened up and observed Jiang An. The apricot-colored cinched waist dress accentuated her figure, slim and curvy like the willows in spring. His eyes darkened as he watched Jiang An still looking downwards, murmuring a "thank you."

"I’ll wait for you in the living room." Gao Chuan withdrew his gaze indifferently and slowly left Jiang An’s room.

Only when the door closed did Jiang An finally raise her head slightly, pursing her lips gently, her face flushed red, and her heart felt like a deer jumping inside.

Afterwards, Jiang An took fifteen minutes to apply a light makeup and joined Gao Chuan for a drive to Mr. Gao and Mrs. Gao’s residence at Nuanyang District. Familiar with the place by now, as soon as they entered the door, indeed Shen Mei pulled Jiang An in with a smile, and the golden retriever that nearly knocked Jiang An over last time now circled around her excitedly with its tongue out.

Jiang An, who had thought it was just a meeting with Gao Chuan’s parents, was suddenly at a loss when she entered and saw a large gathering in the living room. Gao Chuan, following behind and changing shoes, was also taken aback upon seeing that Shen Mei had invited uncles, aunts, and a host of other relatives. Before he could speak, Jiang An was pulled by Shen Mei into the crowd and introduced with a hearty laugh: "See, I didn’t lie to you, my daughter-in-law is beautiful, isn’t she!"

Jiang An, still plastered with a smile despite Shen Mei pressing down on her shoulders, greeted each person with a nod as introduced. Soon she was surrounded by a bevy of curious relatives on the sofa, bombarding her with questions. Gao Chuan, who had been worried about Jiang An’s ability to handle the chatty relatives, was pleasantly surprised to see her handle them so eloquently. Everyone was busy inquiring about Gao Chuan’s new bride while Dr. Gao was left to the side, silently drinking tea.

Gao Lin, at some point, came over and tapped his shoulder, leading him away from the crowd to the quiet of the study.

Separated from the clamor of the living room, the study was silent. Gao Lin, standing by the bookshelf, suddenly slapped the desk and said sternly, "Why didn’t you discuss such a big thing as getting married with the family?"

Gao Chuan had always followed the rules in his studies and career, never doing anything out of line, yet now he had suddenly married in haste. Shen Mei and Gao Lin were dumbstruck when they heard the news from the old lady. Although Jiang An had visited the house before, the old couple had sensed the two were strangers to each other, thinking there was no hope. But to their surprise, in less than three days, the couple had gone and gotten married.

"Aren’t you the ones who were dying for me to get married?" Gao Chuan replied expressionlessly.

"You..." Gao Lin extended a finger towards the tall man in front of him, silently lamenting. Both sons of the Lin Family liked to act first and report later. His eldest son, Gao Yu, against the family’s wishes, had married a small-time celebrity, causing constant divorce dramas and frustration. Now, Gao Chuan had suddenly married a green girl with no prior warning—both sons being disobedient.

It was fortunate that he and Shen Mei were fond of Jiang An, so they weren’t sick with frustration. "I’m asking you, did you marry the girl because you truly like her? You haven’t mistreated her, have you?" Gao Lin asked wearily, sitting down.

As parents, all they wanted was for their children to be happy. Now that things were set, the best they could do was accept the situation, hoping in their hearts that the two young people truly loved each other.

"Is your son the type of person who’s unreliable?" Gao Chuan frowned at Gao Lin’s question and retorted.

"Fine, fine, if he married the girl, he should take good responsibility. The one thing a Gao Family man should never do is to let a woman suffer," Gao Lin waved his hand in concession. Although the Gao Family was large in property and business, they never engaged in trading their children’s marriages for commercial gain. He and Shen Mei were just thinking that now past thirty, Gao Chuan shouldn’t only focus on work and should start taking steps towards family commitment.

"When is the wedding going to be?"

Since the girl didn’t even mention a dowry, the wedding naturally couldn’t be perfunctory, Gao Lin pondered.

"Next year, perhaps," Gao Chuan replied coolly, thinking to himself that maybe the two of them would be divorced by then.

Gao Lin nodded and said, "That makes sense. The poor girl just lost her mother. We can’t mistreat her any further. Right, have you bought the ring?"

Seeing Gao Chuan standing there silent, Gao Lin knew he was completely disinterested in this marriage. Thinking to himself that it’s like explaining to a block of wood, he sighed and pulled open a drawer, taking out a delicately wrapped light purple box and throwing it on the table, "I knew you wouldn’t have prepared. Take Jiang An to buy one in the next two days. Inside this box is a necklace that your mother and I have prepared. Help us give it to her."

Gao Chuan looked down at the box on the table, thinking that getting too entangled might give things away. He silently took it and listened to Gao Lin lecturing him for a while, nothing more than telling him to shift his focus to his family after getting married, the same old tune that he’d heard so much his ears could grow calluses.

When the man finally walked out of the study, he found that Jiang An was already busy helping in the kitchen. He went alone to the balcony and smoked a cigarette, his worries drifting away. He and Jiang An originally didn’t plan to go public and thought about half a year would suffice. Shen Mei’s calling so many relatives over had disrupted his plans.

Divorce might become more troublesome in the future, considering these things the man pinched the bridge of his nose. The relatives who came over were all warm, wishing him a happy marriage and complimenting Jiang An.

He had always thought that Jiang An was just a choice of desperation, but he didn’t expect the girl to handle everything so well.

"Look at you! No wonder you didn’t fancy any of those socialites mom and dad introduced, turns out you like this type," Gao Yu suddenly appeared from behind, teasing Gao Chuan who looked troubled even with a beauty in his arms.

"But she indeed has a great temperament, our lady at home certainly can’t compare," Gao Yu remembered his own wife who would stir up talks of divorce every now and then, making her look amateurish compared to Jiang An.

Gao Chuan quietly smoked, the smoke wrapping around his fingers, remaining silent to Gao Yu’s comment.

"She’s just a bit young, but judging by mom’s overjoyed expression, she must be pleased. Ah, if only Wanwan could please our mother like this," Gao Yu sighed, feeling a bit melancholic thinking about his wife and mother not getting along.

"Ji Wanwan didn’t come today?" Gao Chuan stubbed out his cigarette butt, asking.

"No, she’s filming in West Suburb, you’re not the one to call, call her sister-in-law."

Gao Yu’s protective attitude caught Gao Chuan’s notice. The man silently curled his lips, sometimes really puzzled as to how Gao Yu, so dominant in the business world, could be so tamely managed by a little celebrity, pampered to that extent, as if under some spell.
