Chapter 195: Waking from a Great Dream
After more than half a year, Jiang An moved back home. Since the old house had not been inhabited for a while, her welcome was a blanket of dust everywhere.
It took the girl over an hour to finally get her room cleaned up. Having recently been discharged from the hospital and still frail, she collapsed on her bed exhausted, falling asleep before she had a chance to unpack her belongings.
During the night, a heavy rain began, pounding against the windows with a significant noise, and the girl did not sleep peacefully.
Lately, she often dreamt of her deceased child.
In her dreams, she was covered in blood, lying on the operating table barely alive, while the doctor asked her whether to save the child or the adult.
She tried hard to lift her eyelids, screaming that she wanted the child.
In the end, she was the only one who survived.
Pushed out of the operating room by a crowd, through her blurred vision, she saw many people in the hallway, including Gao Lin and his wife, and her grandmother, pointing and whispering that she had killed the Gao Family’s offspring.
Lying in bed, she desperately tried to speak up to explain, but found her mouth suddenly seemed glued shut.
As tears ran down her cheeks, she saw Gao Chuan, who had always stood silently among the crowd, staring at her fiercely as if he too blamed her.
Haunted by nightmares, she could not wake up for a while.
In the quiet room, Jiang An, lying on the bed, was swallowed by darkness, fine beads of sweat on her forehead, her pale lips opening and closing nervously, emitting painful moans.
Sadly, no one heard her.
She often felt she was very lucky to have married Dr. Gao during the most difficult times, like entering a distant dream.
She was not unaware that in the eyes of the Gao Family, a plain and even helpless girl like her marrying Gao Chuan was truly a social climbing, which was undoubtedly true, and she could only endure such gazes.
Thus, she desperately tried to please the Gao Family, and was extremely careful around Dr. Gao, fearing that any mistake might leave her with nothing.
But after all the struggles, all she was left with was endless pain.
It was a dream, and eventually, she would wake up.
Jiang An had never expected to sleep straight through to the next afternoon. When she slowly opened her eyes, she found the sky outside gloomy, a fine slanting drizzle making her vision hazy.
Awakening from a great dream, she still felt the residual horror.
Jiang An slowly sat up in bed, her back soaked with sweat, and after regaining some clarity, she reached for the cellphone by her pillow.
She opened the chat box with Gao Chuan. Their last message was a call from the day of the accident.
Misfortune never comes singly as Jiang An found leaks in the bathroom ceiling after going to use it, the rain had accumulated overnight, nearly saturating the wall. Due to poor maintenance, the house’s wiring had also failed, cutting off water and electricity, which felt like a series of calamities for her.
The girl looked around the messy room and sighed helplessly, then walked to the bedroom to call the property management.
Gao Chuan, back to his regular shifts at the hospital, had been busy all morning and had hoped to see Jiang An. However, when he passed her office, he found it empty.
It wasn’t until Dr. Bai asked that he learned Jiang An had resigned not long ago.
The man paused abruptly, his emotions unreadable for a moment.
Seeing his reaction, Dr. Bai, looking surprised, asked, "Really? You didn’t know? Didn’t Jiang An tell you?"
"Why did she resign? What happened in the hospital during this time?" Gao Chuan directly skipped the man’s question and asked directly.
The man shook his head, "She suddenly stopped coming to work, and then just announced her resignation. Her belongings from the office were only moved out the day before yesterday. I heard a bunch of nurses asking her, but she didn’t say anything."
"Song Xin also resigned today." Dr. Bai muttered to himself, suddenly linking the two together, and had a sudden realization as he slapped his thigh, guessing, "Could it be related to you!"
Gao Chuan didn’t ask for an explanation and just walked away from the man. The man turned his head and watched his somewhat lonely silhouette, still full of confusion.
Only he in the department knew about Gao Chuan and Jiang An getting married. However, everybody knew about Song Xin’s affection for Gao Chuan. Now that the two just returned from their business trip, Song Xin immediately resigned, and some gossip had already begun to spread in the department.
Everyone was saying that these two must have gotten together in Switzerland and then, not wanting an office romance, that’s why Song Xin resigned.
It also sounded absurd. Clearly, Jiang An is his wife, but in others’ eyes, they thought him and Song Xin were a perfect match made in heaven.
If he were Jiang An, he would have flipped out long ago.
Rain continued outside the window, the ink-dark clouds pressing down the sky, like the dark veil pressing on his heart.
The man finished his tasks and returned to his office, leaning helplessly into his chair for a short rest.
He hadn’t expected Jiang An to resign—could it be because she wanted to divorce him so badly that she was willing to throw away her own job?
If that was truly the case, she was determined to distance herself from him.
To what extent had he disappointed her? She wouldn’t even give him a reason.
At that moment, the mobile phone on the table "dinged" twice, Gao Chuan reached out to pick it up and found it was sent by Jiang An.
Jiang An: When are you free?
Jiang An: Let’s go to the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Seeing the message content, the man instantly felt annoyed and flung the phone back onto the table.
He was still racking his brains trying to figure out what had gone wrong these past few days that made Jiang An so resolute about divorcing him.
Not long afterward, a nurse came in to tell him that they were requesting his consultation at the emergency department, the man responded with a cold demeanor and followed her out.
Elsewhere, Jiang An was busy for a long time until finally taking a rest. She was dusty all over, and her hair was a complete mess.
After taking a shower and seeing the messages Gao Chuan had sent back in the afternoon, Jiang An picked up the phone and frowned in silence.
Gao Chuan: Where are you
Gao Chuan: Let’s talk tonight
She had thought she made herself clear yesterday, not expecting the man to be so persistent.
For the past half year, she naturally felt that Dr. Gao at least had some affection for her, but it was more of a possessive habit of having her around.
He didn’t truly love her, otherwise their relationship wouldn’t be as outwardly compatible yet inwardly estranged.
Jiang An had thought it over carefully before, she still hoped that when they finally divorce, they wouldn’t be both flushed with anger; the best outcome was to part ways with Dr. Gao, each living well.
The girl set down the towel in her hand, hesitated for a moment, and then tapped out a line of text in the chat box.
Jiang An: It’s too late today, another day.
Jiang An: Let me know when you’re free, and we can meet to talk.
This was the final decision, she resolved.
