Chapter 187 This Time, I Don’t Want to Back Down

The night of late spring was enchanting, with brilliant stars and moon, and a delicate fragrance drifting on the gentle breeze.

On the balcony of the hospital office, a tall man stood against the wind, a milky haze of smoke rising before him, his ink-black hair fluttering, and his piercing eyes in the darkness like an abyssal cold pond.

Gao Chuan was still wearing the well-tailored dark suit from the banquet, his gaze fixed on the dotted lights of the night scene, his brow furrowed in unease, and his mind still replaying the events of the evening’s banquet.

He didn’t quite understand what problem had arisen between him and Jiang An; lately, they seemed to fall into endless arguments at every encounter, which also made him, beset by a myriad of trifles, feel exhausted.

Perhaps, they both needed some time to cool off.

Absorbed in his thoughts, the man didn’t hear the footsteps coming from the office. Dr. Bai, who just finished checking on a patient for the overnight shift, noticed the light on in his office and walked in, only to find Gao Chuan alone on the balcony, drawing on a stifled cigarette. Dr. Bai chuckled and teased him about a recent incident where Gao Chuan bought flowers to appease Jiang An.

"What’s wrong, upset the wife again?" Dr. Bai’s frivolous demeanor caught Gao Chuan’s attention; he took a drag of his cigarette, indifferently leaving the jest unanswered.

Not long after, having finished his cigarette, Gao Chuan returned to his office to gather the documents he needed for his trip. Dr. Bai, exhausted from the day, sat down on a chair, closed his eyes, and tentatively asked, "I heard the director assigned you and Song Xin to go together?"

Gao Chuan continued to pack his belongings unaffected; originally, he was supposed to go on this drug research trip alone, but the director, knowing the lab was short-staffed, assigned Song Xin to join him.

It was just work, he felt nothing of it.

However, he couldn’t help but think about the unfounded speculations among his colleagues about his and Song Xin’s relationship; even Dr. Bai, who was well aware he was married to Jiang An, couldn’t help but become curious and gossiped, "Aren’t you afraid Jiang An might overthink?"

Upon hearing the bantering question, Gao Chuan’s dark eyebrows suddenly knitted together, clearly sensitive to the topic brought up by Dr. Bai.

Just tonight, Jiang An had already made a fuss about Song Xin, and now Dr. Bai was presumptuously crossing his boundaries.

"You judge others by your narrow mind," Gao Chuan replied with a stern voice, his eyes shading over with coldness.

Dr. Bai clicked his tongue and turned his head to ask when he was departing.

"In a while." Gao Chuan, having organized his documents for Switzerland, spoke in a deep voice.

Considering the complications on the other side, they wanted him to arrive as soon as possible, so they booked him a midnight flight.

Dr. Bai, upon hearing this, raised his eyebrows, realizing why Gao Chuan was gathering his things in the middle of the night.

Shortly after, Gao Chuan finished briefing Dr. Bai on the condition of two patients who had undergone surgery under his care and prepared to leave. Dr. Bai followed him out, noting Gao Chuan wasn’t bringing anything aside from documents, and questioned, "Aren’t you going to say goodbye to Jiang An?"

Gao Chuan’s eyes dimmed, and after pausing for a few seconds, he hailed a taxi and got in.

There was no need; by the time he got back, Jiang An’s anger might have subsided, and then they could talk calmly about tonight’s issues, Gao Chuan thought to himself.

"Driver, to South Suburb Airport," he said, massaging his temples.

In the darkness, the taxi slowly set off and gradually disappeared into the night.

Jiang An slept restlessly until the wee hours of the next morning. Despite her exhaustion, her sleep was anything but peaceful, waking up several times. Each time she sat up and saw the empty space beside her, her heart ached.

Was he still angry with her, right?

Even though she wasn’t feeling well, Jiang An still went to the hospital as usual the next day. It was only after she arrived at her department that she learned that Gao Chuan and Song Xin had been sent on a business trip to Switzerland.

She had been paying attention to her phone messages, but the man hadn’t left her a message about going on a business trip.

Even a husband who is rather thick-skinned would at least inform his own wife, especially since they had just had an argument the day before.

Jiang An was preoccupied and also feeling unwell, which made her look out of sorts. As she passed by the nurse’s station, a friendly young nurse stopped her to ask if she was sick.

Jiang An instinctively touched her own forehead and didn’t detect anything unusual, but after working half a day, she felt weak, likely due to the weather warming up and causing her some nausea.

"I see you look a bit pale. If you’re feeling unwell, you should go get it checked out quickly," the young nurse gently advised her.

Jiang An nodded at her words, but before she could leave, she overheard the gossiping voices of two other nurses nearby.

"My goodness, it’s so obvious with those two, isn’t this like an official announcement?"

"Right? Alone together, a man and a woman, something is bound to happen!" The nurses were discussing the gossip about Song Xin and Gao Chuan in private, and even though Jiang An knew their business trip was certainly work-related, she couldn’t help but feel upset upon hearing their words.

She held out until the end of the workday and finally breathed a sigh of relief. When she got home, she specifically looked up the recent flights from Jing City to Switzerland, guessing that if the man had left last night, he should have arrived by now.

From time to time, she opened her message thread with the man, but there was still no new message coming in.

The man had left without a word, not even bothering to send her a message to let her know he was safe.

He might still be angry with her, Jiang An surmised.

Now, whenever she thought about her fiery outburst in front of the man last night, she was filled with regret. It was so unlike her.

She wasn’t oblivious to the fact that from the beginning to the end, it might have all been Song Xin stirring up trouble between them, yet she still found herself falling into the woman’s traps every time.

Being jealous, harboring baseless suspicions about her own husband was the last thing she wanted to become in her marriage.

Yet now, she had become just that.

Dr. Gao must be very disappointed with her, Jiang An thought, lowering her eyelids.

But after all, she had only done what any ordinary wife would do.

Lying in bed tossing and turning for a long time without sleep, the girl slowly picked up the cell phone by her pillow, opened their chat, squinted her eyes, and started to type.

The dim glow of the screen illuminated the girl’s fair complexion in the dark as she thoughtfully typed out a line of text.

"Dr. Gao, I’m sorry."

She reconsidered and felt it wasn’t right, pressing the delete key several times.

She thought perhaps she should just play dumb and pretend the whole issue was behind them.

"Is everything going smoothly on your trip?"

Looking at the few words on the screen, she felt they were too deliberate and eventually deleted them, locked the screen, and tossed the phone aside.

Why should she be the first to admit her mistake? Even though it was her who misunderstood the man first, this time, she inexplicably didn’t want to back down.
