Chapter 167 They Are Childhood Sweethearts
Weekend.
Due to the warmer weather, Grandma had moved back to the suburban villa a few weeks ago. Her current condition wasn’t very optimistic as she had been hospitalized after the new year.
However, Grandma Gao has always disliked staying in the hospital and hoped to spend her last days comfortably at home.
Gao Chuan and the others always took any chance they could to visit her, hoping to make her happier in her final days.
Coincidentally, Jiang An was planning to spend the weekend with her and had heard that the elderly lady had gone a long way across town to buy some easy-to-digest snacks due to a recent craving.
Gao Chuan had once told her that all they could do now was to fulfill Grandma’s wishes as much as possible.
When Jiang An arrived at Grandma’s villa by taxi, it was nearly noon. As she walked through the garden with bags in hand and entered the living room, she heard voices chatting inside.
She handed over the items to Aunt Liu on the side and heard Aunt Liu greet her with a smile, "Ms. Song is here, she’s giving the old lady a massage inside!"
Ms. Song? Jiang An walked in perplexed only to find Song Xin standing next to the sofa massaging the elderly lady’s shoulders, and they seemed to have just been talking about something that made Grandma laugh out loud.
Seeing this scene, Jiang An couldn’t help but pause.
Dr. Song? How is she here?
Seeing Jiang An entering the living room, both Grandma Gao and Song Xin looked up at her. It was the elder who brightened up first and urgently waved her over as she saw Jiang An standing dumbfounded, "Anan, come here, let me introduce you."
Obediently, Jiang An walked over, avoiding eye contact with Song Xin.
She couldn’t even dare to imagine how Song Xin would react once Grandma revealed her identity which had been kept from Song Xin all this while.
"Xinxin, let me introduce you. This is my granddaughter-in-law, Jiang An. She and Gao Chuan got married last October, I believe you haven’t met each other."
Song Xin stopped the massaging she had been doing, still standing behind the sofa, and looking at Jiang An, who now blushed, she smiled and said to Grandma, "Grandma, we’ve known each other for a long time."
"Jiang An works in my department, and she is my intern!" Song Xin explained gently to the kindly-looking old lady.
Jiang An watched as Song Xin confidently and gracefully handled the situation in front of the elder, totally opposite to how she had criticized her just a few days ago.
Grandma was a bit surprised by her response and after a moment she advised, "Really? They’ve never mentioned it; that’s even better, Xinxin, please take good care of Anan."
Song Xin chuckled, "Of course."
Jiang An, standing to the side listening to their conversation, felt utterly awkward. However, her hand was still held by Grandma until she asked about Jiang An’s busy schedule at the hospital, which barely brought her back to her senses. Remembering the snacks she bought in the morning, she turned to get them.
The osmanthus cake from West City, something Grandma had wanted for a long time. It was why Jiang An had gone all the way to get it to let the elderly lady try it.
Jiang An opened the package and handed it over, "Grandma, look what I brought for you!"
As expected, when the old lady saw the delicacies she had been craving, her eyes lit up, but before she could reach for them, Song Xin, who was beside her, stepped in to stop her, "Grandma, you forgot we just took your blood pressure and it was high? The pastries contain a lot of sugar, it’s better not to eat them."
Jiang An, upon hearing this, awkwardly put down the box she was holding, and the old lady also shamefacedly withdrew her hand. Song Xin took the opportunity to sit down on the sofa next to the old lady, "Grandma, I’ve already emailed a friend in the United States, I expect a reply soon, and then I’ll take you to the United States for treatment."
The old lady, still with a kind look, held Song Xin’s hand, "You are really thoughtful, but there is no need to trouble yourself, I know the state of my own health, I’m not seeking to live a century, I just let nature take its course now."
Before the old lady could finish, Song Xin interrupted, "Tsk tsk tsk, what are you saying, Grandma? Don’t speak such disheartening words. With technology so advanced nowadays, there’s always a way. You will definitely get better."
Jiang An listened to how Song Xin was comforting the old lady, thinking about all the things she bought for the old lady, suddenly feeling somewhat embarrassed.
She just wanted to cheer up the old lady, not thinking so rigorously about it.
While caught off guard, she heard Song Xin suddenly turning the conversation towards her, "Right, Jiang An?"
She snapped back to reality and cooperatively replied a few times, smiling and saying, "Yes, Grandma will surely live to a ripe old age."
The three of them sat in the living room, mostly it was Song Xin and the old lady chatting cheerfully. Perhaps reminded of something, the old lady took out the family photo album from the house and showed it to them.
Gao Chuan was raised by Grandma Gao since he was very young, there were many pictures, even some from when he was wearing split pants, flipping through each aging photo, patiently sharing the stories behind them.
"This photo is from when Gao Chuan was young and saw a toy car at a toy store. He stared at it from the store entrance for a long time, wanting it but didn’t dare to tell me directly. He looked so adorably mischievous."
Jiang An sat watching Gao Chuan’s childhood photos, even though he was only four or five years old, his big eyes and thick eyebrows made him look like a little star.
Following the old lady, Song Xin said, "It turns out Grandma bought that toy car for Gao Chuan. When I was little and played in his room, I saw that toy car, and he still keeps it."
For such distant memories, Jiang An could only listen quietly, barely getting a word in, almost entirely it was Song Xin conversing with the old lady.
Feeling like an outsider in this atmosphere, she didn’t stay seated long before standing up and heading to the kitchen to help.
Aunt Liu was in the kitchen preparing lunch just for the few of them. Jiang An washed her hands and came in to help, and while chopping vegetables, she heard Aunt Liu say, "Second Young Madam hasn’t seen Ms. Song yet, right? She can be considered a friend from childhood with Second Young Master, often coming to play at our house at that time."
"When I first saw her, she was about this tall," Aunt Liu reminisced while making a gesture with her hand about height, seemingly sighing at how fast time flies.
Jiang An silently nodded, somewhat absent-minded.
She initially thought Song Xin and Gao Chuan were just ordinary university classmates, not expecting that what those people in the hospital were saying was true.
Song Xin really did grow up with Gao Chuan, and it seemed like the Gao Family liked Song Xin a lot.
Even if slow to notice, she couldn’t help thinking of them as childhood sweethearts.
Especially the way Song Xin was familiar with Grandma just now in the living room, it must be that the two families were indeed close.
So, could it really be that there had never been any emotional feelings between them over all these years?
She couldn’t help but doubt.
