Chapter 166 So, I Choose to Let Go

As weeks passed by in March, spring seemed to dawdle, its warm breath gradually reaching the world.

The sky was painted with white clouds and blue hues, sunlight burst forth, creating a scene as if lifted from a dream.

At this moment, a grand wedding was held outdoors as scheduled. Sitting amongst the crowd was Gao Chuan, clad in a pure black suit, the corners of his eyes upturned ever so slightly, his gaze firmly on the couple exchanging rings upon the stage.

The wedding took place on a lawn outdoors; though not extravagantly large, the arch made of pure white petals and the red carpet were still brimming with romance.

The groom was a good friend known to Gao Chuan since childhood, who after a decade-long love marathon with his partner, finally became husband and wife. Fortunately, Gao Chuan was able to take time off to attend today’s event.

Following the host’s lead, the couple exchanged rings and kissed under a shower of flower petals, their friends and relatives jeering playfully from below. In the crowd, Gao Chuan watched this scene, his lips curving into a barely noticeable smile.

Suddenly, the man reached out and gently touched the knot of his tie, his expression softening.

Jiang An had gotten up early today to propose tying his tie, the girl who once fumbled through the process handled it with ease this time, swiftly creating a perfect Windsor knot for him.

His fingertips lightly rested on the tie knot, as if through it he could sense the warmth from the girl’s fingers from the morning.

Jiang An said, she would try hard to become a qualified wife in the future.

The tender images surged through his mind, his brow relaxed, and a rare smile spread across his face.

Song Xin caught sight of his brief smile from not too far away, and she was almost in disbelief at the man’s touched expression.

He could still smile, even when no one else knew.

Song Xin knew that the man was coming today since the groom was a common friend of theirs, and it was completely appropriate for her to attend. However, due to Gao Chuan’s recent aloof behavior towards her, she did not sit next to him as usual.

Across a few bustling heads, the woman in the white dress glances at the man who remains silent throughout, unable to summon the courage to go up and greet him.

After all, she feared that in the presence of such a large crowd, if Gao Chuan snubbed her again, her prestige as Ms. Song would be completely lost.

It wasn’t until midday when everyone moved to the banquet hall that the two were seated at the same table, still with a few friends between them but seemingly closer than before.

Shortly after, the groom and bride came down to toast. A few jokes were exchanged at the table, and Gao Chuan returned a drink as per tradition, and when he sat down again, he was pulled into a brief chat by someone nearby and then left the banquet.

Song Xin knew he never liked such lively yet strange occasions and watching him rise and leave, it wasn’t long before she followed suit.

Today, she wasn’t merely here for the wedding feast.

After exiting the banquet hall and searching for a while, she indeed spotted the man smoking alone not far away outdoors. Song Xin adjusted the stray locks of hair by her temples, walking swiftly towards him.

Even though it was midday, the sun wasn’t too harsh. By the man’s side was a wooden rattan swing, and from a distance, his silhouette seemed to be glowing faintly.

"Hiding out for some peace and quiet again," Song Xin arrived by the man’s side and casually sat on the adjacent swing. She was dressed in a wine-red gown today, her appearance both enchanting and elegant.

Seeing her approach, Gao Chuan quietly snuffed out the half-burnt cigarette and slightly turned his body.

Song Xin watched his extinguishing the cigarette, and her mind was suddenly flooded with memories.

Actually, to say Gao Chuan was never rebellious wouldn’t be entirely accurate, because she had discovered his smoking habit when she was just a teenager.

It was just that she didn’t know whether Gao Chuan hid it well or if Gao Lin and the others simply didn’t oppose it, as no one stopped him at that age.

Over time, the habit stuck.

A breeze wafted by, slightly lifting the woman’s skirt. Gao Chuan, although he had come out for some peace, didn’t want to have too much interaction with Song Xin and prepared to get up and leave. But before he could turn around, he heard Song Xin, who was sitting on the swing, ask, "Why didn’t you bring Jiang An with you?"

Hearing the woman’s blunt question, Gao Chuan wasn’t surprised; after all, Song Xin had her ways, and it wasn’t strange that she could find out that his marriage partner was Jiang An.

He was just worried that Song Xin would make a fuss in the department.

Before the man could express his emotions, Song Xin had already preempted his doubts, clearly stating, "Don’t worry, my brother already told me, I won’t expose the relationship between you two in the hospital."

Gao Chuan remained expressionless, his gaze turning toward a musical fountain off to the side.

Song Xin looked up at the man standing before her and suddenly curved her lips into a smile, her faint laughter immediately drawing his gaze.

"Gao Chuan, sometimes I think you’re really quite cruel. I waited so many years but never got a word of affirmation from you," Song Xin said, her eyes already dimming, her restless gaze settling on her high heels.

"To think I was so foolish to believe that if I persisted long enough I could thaw your block of ice. Now it seems I was mistaken."

Gao Chuan stood in place, listening to the woman’s almost complaining words, yet his tone was calm.

The look in his eyes resembled more of a farewell.

Song Xin had thought she would cry when she said these words, but in fact, she did not, not even feeling a tinge of soreness in her eyes.

Her relaxed expression seemed to suggest that this decade-long first love in front of her was of no consequence at all.

"Since you’re already married, then it’s time for me to let go too." Song Xin, without knowing when, had already looked up to meet the man’s gaze, her eyes a mix of restraint and resignation, which somehow tugged at the heartstrings.

Gao Chuan quietly watched the woman on the swing. After knowing Song Xin for so many years, this was the first time he saw her displaying such a humble attitude.

"From today on, I’ll try to slowly shed my affection for you. It’s time for our story to come to an end too," the woman said slowly.

The man’s gaze gradually shifted away from her, and he said indifferently, "It’s best if you can think this way."

Song Xin turned her head to look at the man, suddenly jumped off the swing, walked up to him, patted his shoulder, and with a change of emotion, smiled, "But don’t be too cruel, we can still be friends."

"Just casual friends," she said deliberately, maintaining a stiff smile on her face.

For some reason, she suddenly remembered Wei Yan whom she had met before, who said, when the person you like gets married, naturally you wouldn’t disturb them.

Sadly, it seemed she still couldn’t do that.
