Chapter 164 Your Wife Was Pushed
"Are you really okay? The push you got just now didn’t seem light," the young nurse asked with concern, gripping Jiang An’s arm, thinking to herself that if she and Song Xin hadn’t arrived in time, who knows what that crazy woman would have done, getting all up in her face!
Jiang An tried stamping her feet to clear the meridians throughout her body and smiled faintly: "I’m fine."
"Ah, Dr. Song really does have a temper. She was too harsh on you, I feel bad for you," the young nurse complained, empathetically taking Jiang An’s side.
Truth be told, it seemed that Jiang An hadn’t really done anything wrong, so why was it that, in Song Xin’s view, she was unforgivable?
Unhappy with Song Xin’s scolding of Jiang An, the young nurse leaned in close and whispered to Jiang An, "Don’t take it to heart, she’s probably on her period, that dark expression on her face says it all."
Jiang An chuckled along and then walked away by herself, limping due to the hard fall she took. The young nurse wanted to help her but Jiang An refused, saying that moving around more would do her good.
Jiang An herself was also feeling aggrieved, but what she was best at was self-digesting such emotions.
After walking only a few steps, she started to reflect on her own behavior that day. She admitted that she had been somewhat impulsive, yet thinking of the patient suffering terribly from the tumor, her heart still ached.
Why was it that the life of a woman giving birth was not considered valuable? If she had known that this would happen, that mother probably wouldn’t have married her husband in the first place.
As noon approached, feeling upset, the girl didn’t want to face Song Xin and went downstairs alone, walking by herself beside the hospital.
Meanwhile, as usual, Gao Chuan and Bai Cheng went to the cafeteria to eat together, sitting in their usual spots. Normally, Jiang An would sit diagonally opposite them, visible to Gao Chuan from his angle, observing her back.
Today, after a long wait, that familiar figure still hadn’t appeared. As Gao Chuan unnoticeably looked around, Bai Cheng, noticing his behavior as if searching for someone, spoke up to remind him: "You don’t know yet, huh? Your wife got pushed this morning."
Gao Chuan’s eyelashes quivered slightly upon hearing this, and he asked expressionlessly, "What happened?"
Bai Cheng, noticing how eager the man was to find out the situation, laughed "hehe" and recounted the morning’s events in great detail to Gao Chuan.
The man listened attentively until Bai Cheng mentioned that Jiang An was okay, after which he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"In my opinion, the young lady, being new here and filled with integrity, acted quite understandably," Bai Cheng analysis while eating, "However, I heard that Jiang An was scolded harshly by Dr. Song and was on the verge of crying."
Bai Cheng intentionally exaggerated the story in front of Gao Chuan, his tone filled with sympathy, while he didn’t forget to observe Gao Chuan’s reaction.
Indeed, upon hearing that Jiang An had been brought to tears, Gao Chuan’s eyes narrowed imperceptibly, and his brows furrowed tightly, his heart suddenly skipping a beat.
But now they were still in the hospital, and to adhere to the promise made with Jiang An, he couldn’t go to find her directly.
He pondered what to do in the evening to comfort Little Ostrich, becoming so engrossed in his thoughts that he didn’t notice someone had suddenly approached.
Song Xin took a seat beside them before the two men could speak and asked, "Why did you guys come so early today?"
Bai Cheng, who was busy eating, laughed out loud at this stroke of timing, essentially "speak of the devil and he shall appear," which drew a puzzled look from Song Xin. She asked him coldly what he was laughing at.
Before Bai Cheng could answer, Gao Chuan had already picked up his plate and departed from their table. Song Xin, seeing the man leave as soon as she arrived, exclaimed in dismay, "Hey, what kind of person does that, leaving as soon as I come?"
Gao Chuan had already walked away without a word, and Bai Cheng laughed even more heartily at the scene. Song Xin realized she was being laughed at and glared at him, asking, "What’s so funny?"
She had actually come to have lunch with Gao Chuan, and now that he had left without a word, she felt disinterested, mechanically shoveling food into her mouth. Suddenly, her mind flashed with news she had heard from a friend the other day.
Gao Chuan married so quickly because of his grandmother.
On the other side, Jiang An finally managed to compose herself and returned to the hospital. She stretched her hand to press the elevator button for the upper floors and had just entered when another figure came in. The girl looked up slightly and saw Gao Chuan towering over her, his expression slightly displeased.
Jiang An stepped back several paces to give the man room, her head hung low, possibly unaware of how gloomy she appeared to be.
She thought Gao Chuan would follow her into the elevator, but to her surprise, the man stepped forward, took her hand, and pulled her out of the elevator.
Jiang An followed Gao Chuan out of the elevator in astonishment, trying to shake off his hand, and whispered in resistance: "Dr. Gao..."
The man walking in front of her didn’t seem to intend to let go and continued to pull Jiang An into the dimly lit stairwell.
Once the man finally stopped, Jiang An managed to withdraw her hand. Just when she was about to scold Dr. Gao for making moves on her in the hospital again, he took her hand and gently rubbed it in his palm, his voice as tender as his actions: "Is anything the matter?"
No one passed through the stairway, and the man’s mellow voice echoed slightly, gently brushing by Jiang An’s ear and stirring a significant ripple in the depths of the girl’s heart.
She didn’t want to cry. She didn’t cry when a patient’s relative roughly pushed her to the ground, nor when she was publicly reprimanded by Song Xin for being clueless.
But now, a man’s ordinary words of concern touched her heartstrings.
So weak, just too weak.
While thinking this, Jiang An buried her head deep into the man’s chest.
She sobbed softly, the sound of her sniffling reached the man’s ears, and Gao Chuan realized the girl was crying.
He hugged her as if it was the most natural thing to do, without saying a word.
At the moment, all he could offer her was a shoulder.
"Dr. Gao, am I really terrible? Am I not cut out to be a doctor?" Jiang An mumbled into the man’s chest.
Like a child who begins to doubt herself after making a mistake, Gao Chuan listened to her tear-choked voice, his Adam’s apple moving up and down before answering after a long while, "So, are you thinking of giving up?"
Jiang An, who had hoped for some words of comfort, felt disheartened by this response. She internally complained that at such times, one should be hugging and lifting one up, offering encouragement and comfort, yet here was Dr. Gao with such an infuriatingly blunt statement.
However, this kind of provocation seemed quite effective. Jiang An shed a few tears to vent her pent-up emotions and then let go of the man to stand firm.
Her eyes flared with a rebellious spirit: "No, I will definitely become a good doctor just like Dr. Gao."
Jiang An raised her arm to wipe away the few remaining tears at the corner of her eyes and glanced at her watch, suddenly becoming anxious, "No, I must hurry up. I still have to write a self-critique."
After thinking for a moment, she looked up at Gao Chuan again and instructed him not to follow her up later.
Having said that, she hurriedly left the staircase.
Gao Chuan watched the girl who was crying just a second ago suddenly act as if she was injected with chicken blood. He felt a mixture of amusement and disbelief.
She’s truly like a capricious child, quick to trouble and quick to recover.
Just as Song Li said, he really felt like he was raising a daughter.
