A team of doctors and nurses in white hurriedly pushed a stretcher with a patient down the corridor, their wheels speeding over the floor, lifting their sweeping white coats in the breeze.

It wasn’t until the patient was finally pushed into the operating room that Jiang An and Song Xin followed hastily. The leading woman was putting on gloves and checking the condition of the patient.

The patient was an older pregnant woman, already complicated by a slightly misplaced fetus due to her being nearly forty, but worse still, at nine weeks pregnant, a malignant tumor was discovered in her left ovary.

In consideration of her baby’s health, the pregnant woman had consistently refused chemotherapy during pregnancy. But her condition deteriorated day by day, and Jiang An was constantly assigned to closely monitor her.

The pregnant woman had been under pressure and not in great health all along, until this morning when she was admitted to the operating room with abdominal pain.

It was nearly half an hour later when people were finally pushed out of the operating room. Jiang An, along with two junior nurses, wheeled the mother-to-be out where the woman’s husband and mother-in-law were waiting outside.

The mother-in-law, upon seeing people emerge from the operating room, hurriedly crowded around. Instead of asking about her daughter-in-law’s condition, she blurted out: "Doctor, how is my grandson? Is the child alright?"

The pregnant woman, who had passed out, was already being wheeled away by two nurses. Observing the grandmother, frantic over her grandson, Jiang An felt a surge of indignant emotion. After witnessing the patient passing through a life-and-death struggle, she knew that her resolve to wait until giving birth to operate was not solely for the child’s sake.

It was probably more due to the pressure from her family.

After all, having a child at nearly forty is something her family must hold dear.

But the tumor was getting worse by the day, and at the rate things were deteriorating, she most likely wouldn’t be able to wait until labor to have the surgery.

With human life at stake, Jiang An felt a sudden pang in her nose, thinking about it.

Facing an elderly person, and despite the anger in her heart, it wasn’t easy for her to say much. She vaguely said a few words to the old woman before calling the mother-to-be’s husband to come over for a talk.

This was a weak man, as Jiang An could tell from the way he took care of his pregnant wife.

He almost always obeyed his aging mother, even to the point of ignoring his wife’s life or death.

"The pregnant woman is in very bad condition. The tumor is at imminent risk of rupture, and she probably cannot wait until childbirth. I personally advise to conduct the excision surgery as soon as possible. After all, you can have another child, but your wife only has one life." "Sir, I understand how you feel, but the condition of the woman in labor is very unstable right now, and the malignant tumor is causing her a lot of damage. The sooner the surgery is done, the better. I’m sure you don’t want the child to lose their mother as soon as they are born," Jiang An pleaded earnestly.

In her heart, this choice might not even need deliberation.

The man standing in front of Jiang An listened to her advice, biting his lips up and down as if trying hard to suppress his emotions. Suddenly, he knelt before Jiang An with tears streaming down his face, "Doctor, I beg you to save my wife, I don’t want the child anymore, please save her."

The man’s weeping echoed through the quiet hallway. Jiang An felt somewhat at a loss watching the emotionally charged man, hastily trying to help him up. Just then, the mother-in-law of the pregnant woman about to walk over saw this scene. Hearing the man say he didn’t want the child and even kneeling to Jiang An, she took a quick step forward, charging between the two.

"Bingsheng, get up, what are you doing!" the old lady pulled her son up. The man, tears glistening in his eyes, begged, "Mom, I don’t want the child anymore, I want to save Zhenzi’s life, I want her to live."

The old lady looked down at the agitated man, and upon hearing his words, she exploded with rage, "What are you saying? Our Lin Family has only had male heirs for generations, do you really want that to end with you, huh?"

Jiang An stood aside, watching the mother and son argue, and indignantly said, "Auntie, the patient’s condition is indeed very dangerous. The tumor is showing signs of worsening. We still recommend terminating the pregnancy, they can still conceive again later..."

Before Jiang An could finish, the angry old lady turned around, glowering at Jiang An. Hearing her suggest aborting the child was like transferring the resentment she held for her son onto Jiang An. Without letting Jiang An finish her sentence, the old lady pushed Jiang An harshly.

The man beside her, seeing his mother attacking Jiang An, quickly stepped in to intervene, and as the three were entangled, Song Xin and another nurse ran over, immediately calling for someone to separate the old lady and Jiang An.

The old lady finally let go of Jiang An when she heard Song Xin threaten to call the police. The girl who fell to the ground was helped up by the arriving nurse while listening to Song Xin and the old lady communicate.

"Auntie, don’t be angry; we never said we had to terminate the pregnancy..."

Later, after Song Xin’s gentle persuasion, the old lady and her son went back to the ward, leaving Song Xin, Jiang An, and another nurse behind. Song Xin turned around to see Jiang An, her hair in disarray, and scolded her sternly, "Jiang An, you’ve really embarrassed me."

Jiang An’s back still faintly ached. Hearing Song Xin say such things, she wanted to argue, "Dr. Song, the life of the pregnant woman is also important, why..."

Jiang An stood there, feeling a mix of emotions. The adjacent nurse, seeing Jiang An who had good intentions treated so poorly, felt sympathy for her and asked, "Are you okay?"

"I’m fine." Jiang An twisted her wrist, replying.
