Chapter 144 Gao Chuan, Hold Me
Saturday.
At dusk, Gao Chuan had informed Jiang An in advance and drove alone to a jewelry store in the nearby mall to casually pick out a watch as Song Xin’s birthday gift. By the time he arrived at the location Song Li mentioned, it was about eight o’clock at night.
Lijing Xuan, the usual place.
Following the instructions of the waiter, the man walked to the private room on the second floor which Song Xin had booked and found that many people had already arrived, all familiar faces he recognized without surprise. Song Xin, who was encircled by the crowd, saw Gao Chuan coming in from afar and immediately stood up from the sofa, turning around to say to a few people beside her, proudly: "See, I told you he’d come."
The woman wove through the crowd towards Gao Chuan at the entrance. The man was in a deep black suit, with thick eyebrows and long lashes, appearing handsome and restrained.
Gao Chuan watched as Song Xin approached him, handed over the gift box to her, and said indifferently, "Happy Birthday."
Song Xin happily accepted it. Although she knew Gao Chuan never took gift-giving seriously, the mere act of receiving a gift from him delighted her.
As the birthday girl, Song Xin was wearing a blue strapless dress, her long black hair cascading over her shoulders, her graceful stature and stunning makeup made her look radiant and attractively bright.
"I’m very happy you could come," Song Xin whispered to the man, her face blushingly shy despite the clamor of the crowd and the particularly loud music.
Song Li, who was at the other end of the room, saw Song Xin leave the group to find Gao Chuan immediately and strolled over to talk to them, his tone slightly accusatory for Gao Chuan’s late arrival, "You finally made it. You have no idea, Song Xin wouldn’t let us cut the cake without you."
Hearing Song Li bring up the matter, Song Xin’s grip on the jewelry box tightened a little.
Gao Chuan, hearing the complaint in Song Li’s voice, ignored the siblings and offered the simple explanation: "There was a bit of traffic on the way."
"Let’s hurry and cut the cake!" Song Xin called to everyone to gather round; Gao Chuan, who never liked to join the crowd, naturally stood at the edge, whereas Song Xin was surrounded by friends like stars around the moon. Song Li had thoughtfully put a birthday hat on her, and someone, in tune with the atmosphere, went to turn off the lights, plunging the room into darkness.
Only the faint glow of candles flickered, as Song Xin, already in the pose for making a wish, closed her eyes, looking absolutely gorgeous under the orange candlelight.
The group started singing the Happy Birthday song in rhythm, while the tall man stood on the outskirts of the darkness without a twitch of his lips.
His gaze settled on the princess-like Song Xin, and for some reason, Jiang An came to his mind.
Maybe it was the sentimental setting, but abruptly, he recalled the scene from a few months ago when he and Song Li happened to encounter Wei Yan celebrating Jiang An’s birthday at a restaurant.
He had never celebrated Jiang An’s birthday; even when Jiang An came home drunk that night, carried by Wei Yan, he had never wished her a happy birthday.
But it probably wouldn’t be the case from here on, he would be with her for every birthday in the future.
She would be his princess, solely his, the man thought to himself.
After the song ended and the cake was cut, the crowd dispersed. The rest of the event followed the usual routine of drinking and playing games, which Gao Chuan preferred to avoid, sitting alone in a corner, contemplating leaving after a while with a goodbye to Song Xin.
Song Xin, who had just returned to the country, took advantage of her birthday to gather many old friends she hadn’t seen for a long time and happily drank a lot of alcohol.
Though the woman held her liquor well, she couldn’t withstand drinking glass after glass in succession and soon began to feel a bit dizzy, still chatting away about her experiences abroad over the past few years with a crowd.
To others, although she was a pampered daughter of a wealthy family, she had insisted on studying the demanding field of medicine, and her six years studying abroad seemed glamorous, but perhaps only she knew how lonely her days had been by herself in a foreign country.
And all of this was for one person.
"Come on, tell the truth about how many boyfriends you’ve had abroad," her friends teased, seeing the flush on Song Xin’s face and laughing.
Song Xin smiled wryly amidst the laughter, though a bitter smile seemed to inadvertently surface.
Having always been surrounded by suitors since she was young, perhaps no one would believe that she hadn’t dated anyone during her six years abroad.
It wasn’t that she hadn’t tried, but the relationships would fizzle out before getting serious.
Because none of them were Gao Chuan.
Perhaps once a person occupies your heart, you can no longer allow the existence of another.
With the alcohol clouding her mind, Song Xin looked around and finally spotted Gao Chuan sitting quietly in a corner on a single sofa, not drinking or smoking, seemingly lost in thought under the dim lights, out of place in the lively atmosphere.
Suddenly, Song Xin’s lips curled into a smile. She grabbed a bottle of alcohol from a nearby table and gulped down a few mouthfuls. Under the surprised gaze of everyone, she got up and walked toward Gao Chuan.
The man was so engrossed in his thoughts that he didn’t notice Song Xin approaching until she nearly stumbled into him. Startled, he looked up to see Song Xin, who appeared intoxicated, slowly standing up from her seat.
Her tall figure blocked the light in Song Xin’s eyes. With a hint of confusion and her face flushed, Song Xin reached out and hugged him, murmuring softly, "Gao Chuan, hold me."
Hearing the faint voice of the woman, Gao Chuan realized Song Xin was pressing against him. The strong smell of alcohol from her filled the air. He stood still and said coldly, "Song Xin, you’re drunk."
But Song Xin still pressed against him comfortably, and upon hearing his reminder, she smiled.
She was drunk, and that was good. She had intended to get drunk so she could lean on him without distraction.
"Gao Chuan, you’re heartless," Song Xin finally let go of him, tilting her head to look up at the towering man before her, her eyes inexplicably brimming with tears.
It was only when she looked into Gao Chuan’s dark eyes that she realized she couldn’t hold back her tears any longer.
She hadn’t cried during the festive seasons abroad when she missed home, she hadn’t cried when she faced hardship alone without help, she hadn’t cried when her family didn’t want her to suffer and urged her to return to her homeland, but now, simply by holding this man for a few seconds, she broke down.
Seeing Song Xin suddenly crying in front of him for no clear reason, Gao Chuan was stunned.
He remembered Song Xin as capricious, but she rarely cried in front of him.
"Do you really have to treat me this way? I was also a victim in that incident back then. I didn’t know Auntie would do that. How long do you intend to blame me for that matter?"
Although her voice was not loud, Song Xin was the focus of today, and as the two confronted each other, they drew a room full of curious gazes.
